Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Two of the all-time classic arcade games come to Xbox LIVE Arcade in Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, a combo of intense action where players must save earth from a deadly bombardment of asteroids. The full historic game is available in its original form, along with a completely re-stylized version featuring evolved graphics. Released in 1979 by Atari, the simple black and white game was a masterpiece of vector graphics game design, and had millions of arcadegoers entranced by its simple mechanic of controlling a spaceship firing at and destroying asteroids. The sequel to the original, released in 1980, Asteroids Deluxe featured the same classic gameplay but added a new shield feature and dangerous satellite enemies. Play both the original and its sequel in all of its classic old-school style. But now, both games have evolved. Support is provided for both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios, including HDTV. Full-screen anti-aliasing and Dolby Digital surround sound complete the gaming experience. Throttle Monkey mode: Both game versions come with a high-speed version known as Throttle Monkey. Can you survive? [Microsoft]

Console Monster
The graphics in the updated versions do look rather good, but the game is just too frustrating to play for long periods of time.

A product of their dated environment for sure, but still two fine examples of video gaming when considered within context.

You can also play with the old graphics and relive that '80s charm. [Oct 2007, p.74]
Xbox World 360 Magazine UK
Not shat or shovel, Asteroids Deluxe is one of the very, very few early eighties games that still play well. [Feb 2008, p.94]
Games Radar (in-house)
They’ll likely stir some major nostalgia for a lot of older gamers out there that remember when arcade games were fixtures in bars and pool halls - back when the cabinets came complete with ashtrays and drink holders. But they haven’t stood the test of time as well as some other bona fide arcade classics.

The Asteroids Deluxe package is another classic game that feels like its achievement points are worth more than the purchase itself.

Old, tired and uninspired. [Jan 2008, p.99]

[An] abomination. [Issue#29, p.117]
Video Game Talk
There are two huge flaws in the release of Asteroids for Xbox Live arcade; the fun factor and the price.
