The best shooter yet released on Xbox 360 - it really does have everything.

Though the single-player provides some feasible outcomes to the what-if scenarios posed by the desperate fiscal, military and political interests of the superpowers in Kazakh oil, the multiplayer provides a more realistic answer to what might happen - endless, bloody, war.

If Battlefield 2: Modern Combat was already a great game on the “old” systems, you’d have to expect it to be great on the next-generation of consoles, and you’d be right.
Better looking version of the current generation console game of the same name. It still doesn’t quite recreate the PC experience perfectly but it does it well enough to make it a compelling purchase.

Doesn't deliver the exact experience of that on the PC, but in watering the formula down just a tad, EA has managed to create an experience all its own.

Somehow the guys at EA have worked some magic by reproducing the Battlefield experience without the expense or hassle that comes with today's gaming PC.

Whether you are looking for an action-focused single-player war game or a fantastic multiplayer experience that rivals those Tom Clancy titles, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a masterful bit of game design. They managed to put just enough single-player elements in to keep the game fun for the solo players while keeping everything intact for the online warriors.

With a better A.I., more realistic enemy spawn points, and improved presentation, Modern Combat is a welcome addition to the Xbox 360's library.

If you don't already own it on Xbox, it's one of the most intense online experiences around. [May 2006, p.66]

Don’t get me wrong, the graphics aren’t next-gen quality but they sure are eons better than the crap you see in the PS2 version.

The gameplay is still fun and the graphics have been drastically improved. The only problem is that we’ve seen almost the exact same game on the original Xbox.

For me, it doesn’t get much better than this. Sure, it is a port, but a damn good one that will keep me busy for quite some time.

I expected more from the single player than I got, especially having time between the current-gen and Xbox 360 version. Weapons upgrades and unlockables are cool, but a storyline that really doesn't go anywhere or suck you in, combined with still lackluster computer AI bring the experience down.

Those of you that haven’t had a chance to check out the franchise yet owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, as it is one of the best online games available on the Xbox 360.

If playing online isn’t your thing, you probably won’t need to get this game, but if you have Xbox Live, that’s a good enough excuse for you to take a good, long look at why war can be cool when only your pride may get hurt.

It is thoroughly enjoyable and easily recommendable, but it doesn't really compare to its PC counterpart.

This frantic and wildly intense FPS is clearly the superior version because of its slight graphical enhancements and its improved online component, but these changes are too cosmetic to influence me to purchase it.

Its single-player campaign is elevated from mediocrity with the inventive Hot Swapping feature, while twenty-four players, armed to the teeth and unforgiving in their violence, is what Xbox Live was made for.

If you’re expecting a whole new game built from the ground up you will be in for a disappointment but if you’re looking for a fun game with an addictive online multiplayer mode then you will definitely want to buy this game.

Are you going to play multiplayer on Xbox Live? If you are, rush out and pick this game up right now. It's got just about everything you could want from a multiplayer game, including plenty of competition and a solid netcode implementation.

Playing online is what will keep you coming back to Modern Combat over and over again. With better connections, much less lag and 3 new maps, the XBL features are definitely worthy.

My suggestion: skip the single-player campaign and head straight to online play.

Although it retains all the good stuff, the game does not get any next-gen treatment at all.

Fair enough, it's very, very similar to the previous Xbox and Playstation 2 versions we've all played - but the added graphical touches and stable Xbox Live play make this a good buy.

For diehard folks who loved the first console version, this Xbox 360 version is an interesting conundrum. It's better, but not by much.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is definitely staying in rotation on my 360. Not for the single-player but for the multiplayer, which I continue to enjoy, playing just one more match until the wee hours of the morning.

Forget Pat Benetar, I guess I only like this Battlefield--for its online play. [Jun 2006, p.109]
Game Informer
The single-player campaign definitely has some balancing issues that I pray DICE patches up in the future, but there are few games that can even be considered in this game's league when it comes to the wars that unfold online. [Jun 2006, p.116]
AtomicGamer
Despite the game's problems, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is still fun if you play online and don't need any real depth in your first person shooters.

It’s a solid game, but with GRAW for the Xbox 360 and BF2 on the PC, other better options are available.

If you just don't have the system to play the PC titles, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is enough to tide you over until you take out that second on your house in order for you to upgrade.

In spite of its delay, the game simply can't steal the thunder from the one-month-old GRAW, especially with AI discrepancies that take away from a core gameplay mechanic like HotSwapping.

In the face of "Ghost Recon," Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is by no means the most modern shooter available for the Xbox 360, though its good design and sheer fun still make it a battle to remember.
While Modern Combat does offer some amount of charm with its highly produced interludes and its slick unit-switching mechanism, ultimately this multiplayer-focused military shooter falls short of its promise with design flaws in its campaign and clunky vehicle handling. The obvious graphical enhancements for the Xbox 360 do add something to the overall package, though.

Although not a bad game, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat did not live up to my expectations. There is nothing original about the game and in many ways I felt that this was a poor man's GRAW.

But if you have played it, or if you still own it, then there’s no gripping reason to reinvest the time—and most importantly, the money—into the Xbox 360 edition.

Multi-player is undoubtably the main event, but single-player manages to stand out thanks to Hot Swapping, which allows you to go anywhere and do anything you want. [Issue #7]

It lacks the insane large scale combat of the superior PC game and is more akin to something like Star Wars Battlefront, but if you find the right group of people, online matches can be a lot of fun.

If there's a real argument for getting BF2MC for the 360 it's that the real heart of the game -- its online multiplayer -- feels so at home on a machine that treats going online as second nature.

If you are a veteran of the Xbox or PS2 versions then there is no reason to take a second tour, however if you have never experience this title or are just plain tired of playing CoD2 and PD0 than this game is a great addition to your collection.

The game is almost identical to its Xbox/PS2 counterpart. While this is not a death sentence, you would expect an Xbox 360 game to have more of that “next gen” feel.

All the glitches make single-play stumble, but the game looks good, sounds great, and runs smooth like butta. [Jun 2006, p.86]

I think if I had not played GRAW first, BF2 might have fared better in the score department. But with a better modern-combat game already on the shelves, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat has to settle for a just-above-average.

Despite the spruced up graphics, hot swap and Xbox live features, there is quite honestly very little here to entice gamers who already have the Xbox or PS2 version.

ItsNoGood gave it a10:
Best on-line FPS game I've ever seen. Character has total freedom of movement, including prone and jump actions. Aim, zoom & shoot like you are there. Weapons are realistic, and are easy to access, reload, & shoot. Team communication is outstanding. Enemy and Friendly players are easily identifiable. Maps are very well planned. Number of players per server is perfect. Unlike some of the complaints listed by others here, I personally LIKE the Sniper's GPS function, showing all enemy locations for your whole team to see, and the fact that your general location is revealed to the one you killed when he dies. It makes for good form, and requires a "sniper" to be skilled in relocating (or defending himself if he chooses to remain still). My suggestions for improvement: 1 Market the game better. It truly is the best FPS, and more folks would play it if they only knew that it is. That allows for more servers, thus allowing for more rank-separations. I play with 24/7 folks who probably live in their mothers' basements, who totally destroy me all the time, yet I rank down very slooooly. Finally, after many games, I down-rank straight from them to the very unskilled players that I totally destroy without even trying much. This results in VERY FAST up-ranks, again sending me back to the super-pros who in turn, totally destroy me for MANY more games to come. I'm not complaining too much though; it's really fun and addicting regardless of who is getting pwnd. 2 Open up CONQUEST servers for clan games. I think that the clan-oriented possibilities this would bring could be phenomenal, totally adding to the dynamics of this game's popularity! CTF can get very boring -especially with the half-maps. 3 Don't allow down-ranking for team killing. Jerks team-kill to get NEGATIVE PPH which gets them down-ranked quickly in order to be able to play with the unskilled. Rewarding them for killing teammates seems unfair to those who are getting team-killed. I won't do it -other than team-killing the team-killers! You should have the server's auto-kick a player at FOUR team-kills (regardless of positive points showing on the screen), allow for faster down-ranking when having lousy PPH, and allow for slower up-ranking for high PPH. 4 Replace the non-rank servers with controlled-rank servers which control the placement of both teams with a balanced number of low, medium, and high-rank players. I don't know if this idea is practical or possible, but that kind of diversity in a match would be real fun.
James S. gave it a10:
This game is the best game I have ever played aside from the glitchen and the team killen and the server issues this is the best game since Atari I think.
Joe M. gave it a7:
Single player was frankly awful, but one of the best multiplayer experiences the xbox 360 has to offer. Personally, I prefer the multiplayer of this title over the likes of GoW and Halo 2.
Ben S. gave it a10:
Best on-line multiplayer ever made. Can't wait for the new batlefield. The single player mode blows.
Adam P. gave it a6:
As many people have already mentioned the single player game is a joke so I'll not even say anymore about that. The multiplayer game is actually pretty good but it could have been so much better. Technically the game is OK, graphics are decent but I second all the comments made about graphical glitches. A big problem for those of us playing in Europe is the lag, I never really noticed this until I visted my friend in California and played the game there. If you play as a sniper you never really notice this because you get used to how much you need to aim off by, although quite often when playing in Europe I have shot someone with the sniper rifle and seen the red indication in the middle of the screen to confirm that I have hit them, yet I have not damaged them at all. When playing with weapons that are used at shorter ranges I noticed a massive difference in how the game played, I can confirm that the online game is far more enjoyable and also much easier when played in the states, probably explains why the leaderboards are dominated by Americans. Other issues that I personally think take away from the online play are...... 1)Showing the location of someone who killed you, they are either going to respawn and come after you in a tank or simply tell another member of their team where you are, this takes away from the fun of actually hiding. 2) The helicopters are far too resistent to gunfire and are armed with far too many rockets, coupled with the fact that a skillful player can dodge GTAMs and lazser sights it makes the helicopters far too powerful. It's not unusual to see a helicopter kill 50 people before being downed despite being subjected to constant gunfire, this is especially frustarting when you are left with only one place to spawn that has a circling helecopter destroying everything as it spawns. 3) The effective kill raduis of explosions is very inconsistent, enemy can see that you are capturing a flag and kill you by detonating c4 on the other side of the wall to where you are, yet I have put a 120mm shell into the ground near someones feet or a wall next to their head and I've not even damaged them! Despite its shortcomings the online game is still very enjoyable, hopefully in the next installment of battlefield these issues will be addressed and will get the awesome game that this could/should have been.
Kevin N. gave it a9:
I rented this game from the video store without knowing what it was. I am the type that wants to be at least decent at single player before venturing into multiplayer. The single player campaign mode is a joke and an embarrassment to EA. After one session I planned to never play the title again. Eventually I tried the multiplayer and fell in love with this game. The kids are upset because I'm hogging the Xbox 360 and they can't play Need for Speed. The wife is upset with me because the kids are tearing apart the house while I am glued to the television. This is like crack for the 360! Now I am on a business trip and suffering withdrawl. Luckily I read the comments that BF2 for the PC is BETTER! I have a new mission to get that game TODAY and somehow get it on my business laptop. Job? What job? I would take issue with the red dot that shows your location to the enemy. You can pick the best hiding spot there is but someone can see where you are from a mile away.
Aaron S. gave it a5:
One of the most frustrating campaign games ever! The multiplayer is ok, but objectives are unclear, and controls suck. There's much better games out there.
