Summary

Players discover Africa's untamed wild as they hunt a variety of African big game in pursuit of the ultimate hunting challenge – the feared Big Five – leopards, lions, elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalo. In Cabela’s African Safari, players choose from seven, 10 or 14 day safaris including open safari, game tracking, baiting and herd hunting missions. The game features over 30 exotic species of animals including sable, kudu, gemsbok, eland, waterbuck, impala and much more, as well as all new African waterfowl and upland bird hunting. Cabela's African Safari also features an unlockable Big Five Trophy level where gamers can experience the world’s most dangerous animals at their fiercest. Hunters also have access to an arsenal of authentic firearms including big caliber weapons they will need to bring down charging rhinos and thundering elephants. In addition, all-new shooting controls and features including Adrenaline Mode, Hunter Sense and Shot Cam, allow gamers to hone in on their prey with more accuracy and ease. [Activision]

Team Xbox

While surely not for everyone from just the title and subject matter alone, Cabela’s African Safari does serve up some decent gaming for a cheapy title focused on shooting something other than a human.

Official Xbox Magazine

The game's underpowered scopes and wonky ballistics are often exasperating--long shots are tough, and point blank encounters sometimes are even tougher. [Feb. 2007, p.80]

IGN

While the campy nature of African Safari is good for a few laughs, they are at the game's own expense. Hunting fans will have to wait yet again for the next -- and first -- great hunting game.

GameCritics

In the end, gamers are all just a bunch of people sitting in front of a television holding a controller, so simulation games must be judged on their ability to make gamers feel like they're performing an action within the limitations of the technology. Cabela's African Safari's poor controls, design choices, and graphics keep this immersion from ever happening.

Matt G. gave it a2:
After playing this "game", and I use the term loosely, I thought "hey guys, wouldn't it be fun to see just lhow bad a metacritic average this game got?" Lone behold when I looked it up I was stunned, nay, ultrashocked to discover it managed to pull off more than a 50! GAMERS BE WARNED! listen not to this metacritic average! this is by far-BY FAR- the worst game I have ever played. HUNTING ENTHUSIASTS BE WARNED! this game contains bullet time... thats right.... your hunter is essentially keanu reeves. ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS BE WARNED! in about 20 minutes I managed to kill about 30 birds, 20 dogs, 5 leapords, 30 deer and deer related mammals, and like, I don't know 3 rhino's? WTF! I kid you not you can run faster than the deer in this game, you don't have to hunt them you just run the animals down. Its fricken hilariously bad! In conclusion, good job cabela, I've been wating a long time for a game to out suck Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness and you managed to pull it off.

Gingerman gave it a6:
First of all...I cant believe this site doesnt have "saints row" rating listed in the rewieved games. and secondly, I can't believe nobody rated this game you are reading about now...cabelas safari has been out for quite some time now. this is an outrage!. Sites and magazines only rate games with hypes these days?...gears of war this, gears of wars that!...go suck on a lolypop idiots. anyway...this game is fun, but not so much fun. first of all the animals dissapear too quickly after you kill them, and there is no blood. so you cannot hang over your fresh kill and examine your animal...WHAT? who dropped the ball on this?...this is a hunting game and, well....the animal dissapears by the time you approach your kill. Just plain stupid. The crew behind this game went to the trouble of using rag dolls for every animal...yeah, thank you guys...if only I can SEE the dead animal...nope, it just dissapears in about 6 seconds. absolute, nonsense, garbage. the graphics are allright, considering its a cabela game...they are magnificent!...because I vaguely remember the other cabela games as being painted on the screen by monkeys...so this is an improvement. here's the thing though...you know, i can go and hunt rad doll deers in the elder scrolls 4 oblivion game...plus do like 6000 other things...so, why do I even bother playing african safari?...activison needs to realize its next gen time, and at least give us bigger maps, more animals...and for god sakes...dead animals that just STAY there on the ground, like real dead animals would. Ova and out...peace.

GrafixGuerilla gave it a7:
Better than Alaskan Adventure, The graphics are a step up from it too. If you like hunting games, give this one a shot. The herd hunting is a nice addition. First aid kits, shopping and out-of-shape hunters are done away with in Safari also!

Florida Gunslinger gave it a5:
Terrible graphics. More reminiscent of Nintendo 64 than worthy of the 360. Gameplay OK, but very frustrating.
