Game Info

Publisher: Microsoft

Developer: Realtime Worlds

Genre(s): Action, Driving

Players: 2

ESRB Rating: M (Mature)

Release Date: February 20, 2007

Summary

Enforce justice by any means necessary in a crime-ridden urban center built to encourage the exploration of the full width, depth, and height of the city. Coupled with co-op gameplay, a first for the genre, and an interactive world where nearly anything can be used as a weapon, create a volatile cocktail of action as you clean up the streets. All strategies and tactics are acceptable provided you reclaim the streets by unleashing the awesome potential inside each Agent. As you develop and hone your gameplay skills, your Agent's genetic tendencies will increase. Run at dazzling speeds, take death-defying leaps, perform impossible vehicular maneuvers, move massive objects, and deliver bone-crushing blows. Low on ammo? No problem. Thanks to an amazing amount of props and a deep physics system, use whatever you can get your hands on as weapons—trashcans, vehicles, even people—to clean the streets of crime. From its initial concept to its final design, Real Time Worlds focused on delivering dynamic, engaging, cooperative gameplay for double the carnage, action, and intensity. Wage war on the syndicates by taking part in high-octane chases on foot and on wheels while using any appropriate route along, around, across, over, under, or through the environment. [Microsoft]

This is the kind of game that takes over your brain after long play sessions, leading you to scrutinize real-life buildings for handholds and leaping potential. It’s an absolute blast to play, and arguably one of the finest superhero games made thus far.

As much as a sore ass is the sign of a poor movie, sore eyes from a lack of blinking is a sure sign of an excellent videogame. Perhaps the biggest endorsement worth assigning to Crackdown is that hours of enjoyable gameplay will fly by as the player endeavours to rid Pacific City of its criminal contingent - and not much blinking will take place in the process.

A wonderful sandbox title that branches off from the "GTA" tree rather than feeding off it; when you set off a huge chain reaction of barrels, you’ll see the game "Saints Row" wished it was. When you climb to the top of the Agency HQ and peer down at the world, you’ll see the game "Just Cause" could never be. And every so often, you’ll see another moment of brilliance; a reminder of the game you want GTA IV to be.

If you've ever felt that Mario needed more guns, explosives, and the ability to drive up to a villain in a sports car, then get out and throw the sports car at the villain's head, or that GTA would be vastly improved if the lead character was an indestructible mute on a pogo stick, then this is the game for you. It's just lacking a certain meatiness that (and here's that name again) the GTA games have in spades, even if they don't have quite the same level of originality that's been shown here.

Compared to so many free-roaming games to date, it so rarely stumbles. It’s the very skeleton of the genre, those bones strengthened to the point where they alone can stand as a game, rather than serving as hangers for threadbare ideas to be dangled from. [Mar 2007, p.76]

Crackdown is one of those games that sounds like it’s full of good ideas until they’re actually put to use. This feels like an alpha build of a game: the point in a game's development cycle where engine is in place, and the world has been built, and a few bad guys running around for testing purposes. Unfortunately, the actual meat of the game, the story and the missions, haven't been added yet.

j law gave it an8:
This game is pretty awesome. It's not the most replayable of games but if you take the time and effort you can definitely try some things. people say it's repetitive but they said the same thing about Assassin's Creed. This game is not perfect but if they put some story and more gameplay options in the sequel people will love it more. i won't mind if they keep the round house kick though :)

Joshua F gave it a9:
This is what GTA4 should have been. The pacing of the game is great and it's easy to get around the city, even on foot. The RPG style elements force you to play the game differently then i normally would which keep the action going. Boss fights however are fairly easy (just knock them down and keep kicking them) and boring. I went out of my way to rate this game better then gta4.

P M gave it a10:
On top of my list of XBOX 360 games, and I am talking 3 years after release. I keep coming back, the shear playability, fun and explorative dimentions of this game are fabulous. NEED TO HAVE title for the 360. Try it and you'll be a crackhead as well.

Crash gave it a7:
Not perfect but definitely fun. The game is entertaining and I recomend it for any 360 owner. The graphics arent great but they work for the 360. The combat system is easy to learn and entertaining and will keep you blowing up city blocks worth of badguys for quite some time as long as you dont just rush the bosses and finish the game. My only major hang up is the driving mechanic. I find the cars touchy, but at the same time hard to handle in these environments which have made me avoid almost all the driving contests in favor of jumping from roof to roof.

David gave it a10:
Very Very Very Fun game!! It is a wide open game from the get go. I know this might sound shallow but there are no stories and no cut scenes. Just get your car and your guns and go out there and kick some but. Love the 3 different nationalities and how detailed they were with the language and everything. Just so much fun! I just loved being able to jump from one place to another. I never play games twice but this is the type of game that I would gladly start again. I hope there is a sequel.

Ian R. gave it an8:
Crackdown is a decent game that is fun and action packed. The trick that the developers used in Crackdown is that the more you play the more fun fighting crime becomes. Your skill improve the more you fight so its encouraged to cause mayhem. That being said its not a very in depth game either. There aren't any buildings you can go in, no story, and there isn't any mini games. Its like mercenaries and ultimate spiderman in one package. Its worth a try!

Cormac H. gave it a10:
GTA meets Spiderman. This is one of the best games on the 360. You get into it far quicker, is more tactical and yet remains quick and explosive through out. Over very quickly though but Co-op and tougher difficulties as well as hidden extras will keep you going for days.
