Enforce justice by any means necessary in a crime-ridden urban center built to encourage the exploration of the full width, depth, and height of the city. Coupled with co-op gameplay, a first for the genre, and an interactive world where nearly anything can be used as a weapon, create a volatile cocktail of action as you clean up the streets. All strategies and tactics are acceptable provided you reclaim the streets by unleashing the awesome potential inside each Agent. As you develop and hone your gameplay skills, your Agent's genetic tendencies will increase. Run at dazzling speeds, take death-defying leaps, perform impossible vehicular maneuvers, move massive objects, and deliver bone-crushing blows. Low on ammo? No problem. Thanks to an amazing amount of props and a deep physics system, use whatever you can get your hands on as weapons—trashcans, vehicles, even people—to clean the streets of crime. From its initial concept to its final design, Real Time Worlds focused on delivering dynamic, engaging, cooperative gameplay for double the carnage, action, and intensity. Wage war on the syndicates by taking part in high-octane chases on foot and on wheels while using any appropriate route along, around, across, over, under, or through the environment. [Microsoft]

As much as a sore ass is the sign of a poor movie, sore eyes from a lack of blinking is a sure sign of an excellent videogame. Perhaps the biggest endorsement worth assigning to Crackdown is that hours of enjoyable gameplay will fly by as the player endeavours to rid Pacific City of its criminal contingent - and not much blinking will take place in the process.

A wonderful sandbox title that branches off from the "GTA" tree rather than feeding off it; when you set off a huge chain reaction of barrels, you’ll see the game "Saints Row" wished it was. When you climb to the top of the Agency HQ and peer down at the world, you’ll see the game "Just Cause" could never be. And every so often, you’ll see another moment of brilliance; a reminder of the game you want GTA IV to be.

If you've ever felt that Mario needed more guns, explosives, and the ability to drive up to a villain in a sports car, then get out and throw the sports car at the villain's head, or that GTA would be vastly improved if the lead character was an indestructible mute on a pogo stick, then this is the game for you. It's just lacking a certain meatiness that (and here's that name again) the GTA games have in spades, even if they don't have quite the same level of originality that's been shown here.

Compared to so many free-roaming games to date, it so rarely stumbles. It’s the very skeleton of the genre, those bones strengthened to the point where they alone can stand as a game, rather than serving as hangers for threadbare ideas to be dangled from. [Mar 2007, p.76]

Crackdown is one of those games that sounds like it’s full of good ideas until they’re actually put to use. The role-playing elements are addictive for a while, and it can be fun to play in this sandbox, setting up massive explosions and stunts, but the actual game is seriously lacking in a number of areas, and compared to the other GTA clones on the market, it falls firmly into the middle.

This feels like an alpha build of a game: the point in a game's development cycle where engine is in place, and the world has been built, and a few bad guys running around for testing purposes. Unfortunately, the actual meat of the game, the story and the missions, haven't been added yet.

Owen M gave it a9:
Amazing fun to be had here. No real story to speak of, but for those who play GTA just for fooling around this is right up your alley. I don't know how I can go back to GTA with out the ability to jump across city streets.

nikephoros gave it a10:
Incredibly fun game that gives as much joy in exploring its environment as in finishing the missions. I’m pretty much going to ignore the driving aspects of this game since I am basically helpless without a steering wheel and, more importantly, think that this is a secondary attribute of the game. The strong platforming mechanics of Crackdown combined with its long draw distances, good sound effects, and a rich urban environment add up to a captivating motion experience. As you play, the visuals and sounds of running, climbing, jumping, and falling through the city are immersive. Scaling the top of the tallest building will put you on the edge of your seat. As you stand, jump (and fall) from great heights it is sometimes hard not to get a sense of vertigo. That is how good the game play is. Another thing I find extremely impressive is the city setting: it really feels like a city. It is huge and has a lot of diverse neighborhoods and districts. Very rich. As you progress through the game, your character learns to run faster and jump farther by exploring tall structures (i.e. building rooftops, cranes, towers, etc…) and collecting something called “agility orbs”. One of the benefits of more agility is the improved ability to get more agility – this kind of positive feedback helps motive the player to spend a lot of time on top of the city looking for orbs. Agility also helps the character in resolving his missions (the crackdown). The game’s main objective is to eradicate the organized crime organizations/gangs within the city. As you progress through Crackdown, your character gets stronger, shoots straighter, and blows stuff up bigger. He typically achieves this by killing bad guys with his kicks, throws, guns, or explosives. It is worth noting that having good agility helps because it improves your ability to get into and out of trouble (fast) – a real tactical advantage. The arsenal of weapons doesn’t go overboard. It focuses on firearms and explosives (two to three different types of pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, sniper rifles, grenades, and rocket launchers) and avoids stock melee weapons (i.e. blades and bludgeons) completely. It does allow you to kick and to throw anything from dead bodies to cars (if you have the muscles). Crackdown’s auto-targeting option is a nifty little feature that helps the player aim without too much fuss. Just point in the general direction, pull the left trigger, and “presto” you’ve locked on to the bad guy. It can be argued that this lower the game’s pure “shooter” qualities but I believe it adds to both the tempo and quality of the game experience. Frequently during the game, you are simultaneously engaging similar batches of four or five bad guys – the auto-targeting moves the battle on quickly (especially as your skills improve)and thus reducing the monotony of repetitious activity. Increasing tempo is one of Crackdown’s strengths. Coupled with your characters growing skills, movement through the game becomes fast and fluid with great horizontal and vertical depth. I did get through the game pretty quickly (over a weekend) but felt very satisfied and also yearning for more. This kind of experience is what interactive entertainment should be.

Lycos8 gave it a9:
The game may lack depth and variety;, however, building up your agent's abilities to the point where he can throw cars and leap from rooftop to rooftop, all while making head-shots with a pistol, quickly become addicting. The game also has a nice soundtrack and a rather large city to explore.

Anthony gave it a7:
Very good game. It will keep your playing and playing, also if you like just messing around with the Havoc physics, like a Grand Theft Auto game you can go to the marketplace and download the Free For All pack for free. It's extremely fun. Reason why I give it a 7 is the fact that when you're asked to do co-op on Xbox Live, it usually lags or gets disconnected after a few tries.

Matt R. gave it a10:
Very underrated game. Wont win any awards in the story or narrative department but just a sheer joy to play. A unique but well executed visual style, varied game play, and some really fun achievements to earn. This should be in every 360 owner's collection.

Matt F. gave it a9:
One of my favourite xbox 360 titles yet. Fantastic co-op mode which is great with a mate. Hours of fun. One of the best parts is the free-roaming. Driving cars and collecting agility orbs can keep you occupied for hours.
