If looks could kill, DOA4 would be called Murderer's Row. This game is beautiful; even while you're beating the tar out of your opponent, you'll notice that your surroundings are among the finest you've seen in any fighting game... Hands down the best installment in the series. [Jan 2006, p.38]

Boasting amazing looks, stunning animation and instantly accessible yet deep gameplay that's hugely addictive, it's the kind of game that is not only awesome to show off the power of your beloved new 360, but will be a faithful companion for many months to come, thanks to a huge amount to do and a variety of modes both offline and on.

For fans of the series DOA4 is everything you could possibly want from a next-gen iteration of the game; a revamped fighting system, faster game play, and enough T&A to satisfy even the most jaded otaku.

There is little fault to be found in this game as the fighting is balanced and there are lots of engaging aspects of the title that demand your time.

The most impressive and useful feature of DOA is the ability to counter an advance by another fighter. Bear in mind that countering requires precise timing and practice is the only way to perfect this art. I am still learning.

I only wish that the online mode was a bit more solid and less susceptible to lag, but overall it looks fantastic, flows very smoothly, and has plenty of replay value making this the best title for the 360 to date.

Team NINJA has the Midas touch, and it looks as if Itagaki gave this one a one-hour massage before release. It has challenging, in-depth gameplay, the best visuals the console has yet to experience, and enough replay value to kill a Kasumi clone.

There’s nothing incredibly new or earth shattering here, but you can absolutely enjoy it for the fighting game that it is.

The controls feel less random and demand some extra skill, particularly in the countering system that allows one to block a punch and use its momentum to throw an opponent. The game lacks the intuitive feel of similar fighting series like Tekken and Soul Calibur, but it is still tremendous fun.

Each character has multiple costumes to obtain, so the replay value of the story mode is somewhat lacking, unless you are a full blown fashionista who must have all the outfits the game has to offer.

The biggest unique feature to the online component of DOA 4 is definitely the psychedelic crack land known as the lobby...The lobby is so strange and so far removed from what DOA is visually that you really feel like the developers went a bit mad at some point and threw this in for a laugh and a half.

Unlockable costumes, characters, and achievements only serve to keep you going. It may not be as technical as a Virtua Fighter, or as tournament-friendly as a Street Fighter, but it is a ton of fun.
I only one major complaint and that’s the last boss Alpha-152. While not the cheapest boss in a fighter I’ve ever nearly broken my controller over, she does have some angering abilities. Having a fight end in three moves (head blast, spinning kicks, locks your head and shoulder and pounds your head in) is more annoying then challenging.

It's not a totally new slant on the genre, but a very slick refinement... Don't leave the girls of Dead or Alive 4 waiting; you'll regret it in more ways than one.

The counter system is less forgiving and will definitely challenge fans of the series, especially those fond of DOA3. This affects every other area of the game. The harder characters to master are even more powerful now, and there is more of a ground game, in addition to careful use of the backgrounds.

It's still "just" a fighting game, albeit an incredibly polished and finessed fighting game, but it won't open your eyes to things you've never seen before. It will bring the fighting game community together, however, thanks to its online functionality, and that's a good thing.

DOA4 over Xbox Live is quite an experience. It succeeds on a technical level, but the real reason that it's such a riot is the game underneath. The enjoyable, solid, beautiful game that is Dead or Alive 4. This is the definitive title in the series and, as far as we're concerned, the ultimate game in its genre. [Official UK Xbox Magazine]

It is definitely the finest of the series, and is an achievement with the online modes, and the best looking fighter out on the market to date. It isn’t exactly for everyone though, as it can be difficult in single and multiplayer portions of the game.

The legs are long, the sex is gratuitous, and the violence is very, very violent. DOA 4 is definitely firing on all pistons. Still, for a series with the word "alive" on the box cover, these characters all seem kind of plastic, hollow, heartless, and downright bloodless.

Voluptuous in every sense of the word. With the best graphics money can buy and a robust online ring, it's a great choice for your new 360. That said, it still doesn't really bring any new tricks to the fight.

I very much doubt you’re going to see a better beat-‘em-up of this ilk on the 360 anytime soon – unless of course Sega decide to port Virtua Fighter 5 over, but until such a dream occurs, this is more than adequate.

The counter/block system seems to be over-refined with a fine line drawn between whether a counter move is successful or not, and once an opponent is on a roll of combo attacks, players might as well put down the controller and let them do the damage because trying to escape proves to be exceptionally difficult.

Don't buy Dead or Alive 4 unless you're willing to become its student. It's a great looker, but it's a sourly aggravating game until you learn its ways. However, if you take the time to get some technique wrapped up in those fists, you'll start to enjoy the depth behind the startlingly pretty face.

The end result is a Dead or Alive game that's arguably deeper, dizzyingly beautiful and a blast to play online when the damn thing isn't just locking up.

This game is a beautiful mess. The Dead or Alive series has always been known more for T&A than tech gameplay; for every panty shot, there's a cheap juggle combo that involves less skill than it takes to input a cell-phone text message.

If you're planning on playing the single-player much, it's an abomination, and you shouldn't touch it with a bargepole; and on Xbox Live, it's simply so flawed as to be unplayable in anything other than a basic 1v1 lobby, which arguably makes it into a pretty poor investment unless you have a friends list teeming with people who want to play.

Llost gave it a9:
I've had the game for nearly 2 years, it's awesome. It's got the fastest and most fluid combat of any fighting game, a great counter system, varied fighting styles, plenty of playable modes, online play (a little laggy at times though) and great graphics. I can't even stress how beautifully designed this game is. Does have some cons ofcourse, AI can be very difficult (a pro if you like a challenge though), online is laggy and the endings can be a little underwhelming.
ACE5 gave it a10:
You gotta give it to Team Ninja, when they create a game, they do it right! In a gaming world where developers create gamesthat are easy to beat, (because most gamers hate a real challenge) DOA4 is willing to push gamers to work harder for a victory. Most gamers are used to games that give you a special power that you can rely on, to dominate the game and just give the game away so the player can feel a sense of false accomplishment. When in the real world no one just gives things away that easily. " You gotta work for it". And thats what the DOA series has tried to teach. I had fun with this game from beginning to end, and can honestly say it "IS" the greatest fighting game ever created at this time.
Shane S. gave it a0:
DOA4's fighting system is wonderfully complex, and deep. There are over a hundred moves per character. The problem is that the controls are so touchy that it's nearly impossible to perform the same move twice. The result is nothing but button mashing. The game has no special moves of any spectacular effect. No fireballs ala Streetfighter II or anything like that. One of the most annoying things about the game is that there's no jump button. To jump you have to hit punch and diagonall up/back at the same time. The controls are so touchy though that you'll perform a quick jab instead of jump backwards. Ever try to perform a fatality in MKII or MKIII? Imagine trying to do that button input, and distanceing mid combat. Good luck.
Kevin W. gave it a9:
I'm honestly not a huge fan of fighting games. I'm usually pretty bad at them. That said, DOA4 is an awesome game. It's the first one I bought with my 360 and let me tell you, the reader who said that these graphics could have been "easily done on previous generation systems" needs to get an HD TV and see this thing in its full glory. The graphics, level and character detain in HD are absolutely amazing. If Spartan looks as good in Halo3 as it did in DOA4 I will crap my pants. Yes, the AI is pretty hard and can be frustrating, but that is how they get you to practice offline! If you could plow through offline mode so easily there wouldn't be much depth to the game at all. I'm not too good at fighting games but with some persistance I was able to beat the story mode with every character and unlock the Spartan. I can also tell you that the game fighting is deeply layered. In summary: Awesome graphics, good sound, mediocre story, great gameplay.
Adam B. gave it a6:
The computer AI is impossibly frustrating. The real enjoyment comes from the game's online play, and offline multiplayer, where human players don't have the ability to predict moves two milliseconds after your press the button combo. How well a player will do directly relates to how well and quickly they can counter, giving the game a sort of one-dimensional quality. Although the graphics and sound are superb, they could have easily been done on previous generation systems; ironically, the most next-gen graphics appear in the pre-rendered end videos. Unless you are a DOA fan or enjoy extremely challenging, near-impossible games, I'd skip this one.
Jace N. gave it a4:
Once again Tecmo proves that they dont know what the "Easy" difficulty setting is. As a result DOA4 plays worse than their much ciriticised Ninja Gaiden games for its relentless cheap million-attack-a-second gameplay that leaves base human reflexes unable to get a word in edgeways! Theres just no time for moves...no time for throws...no time for counters...theres barely enough time for button mashing...easily one of the best ways to get through the game as it leaves the CPU no opportunity to interrupt with an endless combo! So if you enjoy being so frustrated you could howl...putting down your controller in despair mid-match...and cursing the name of Tecmo and the blue haired japanese gaming gods they exclusively cater for...DOA4 is for you!
Bass gave it a9:
This is by far the best installment in the DOA series to date. Every aspect of the game has been developed and fine tuned in order to create a pure and sophisticated fighting experience. The counter system has been revised heavily allowing for more strategic battles, and the difficulty level has been raised dramatically. Although frustrating at first, DOA4 is an incredibly engaging title that rewards the players hard work and effort, and after a few hours of play and practice combat becomes intuitive and satisfying. Online play is where the game shines and Team Ninja have really set the bar for how online multiplayer in beat 'em ups should be done. It goes without saying that this game is gorgeous to look at and really showcases what the 360 can do. Overall this is one of the best fighting games on the market today and comes very close to matching the brilliance of the Virtua Fighter series.
