Summary

Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance photojournalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to a small suburban town only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. He escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping center, utilizing anything they find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if he is stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for players to survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened.

The spaced out save points create a wonderfully rare sense of dread. You'll want to stock up on inventory and weapons before attempting a particularly difficult passage. And you're not always secure whether you're going to make it. This is where Dead Rising's sandbox zombie killing comes into its own.

In many ways, Rising is a spiritual successor to Capcom's "Resident Evil." This zombie epic, however, has brains and a heart to go with its blood and gore. [Sept 2006, p.55]

This game could have been one of the greatest games of all time. You could replay it hundreds of times, and it just wouldn’t get old. Instead, the game has been crippled by the horrible save system, lousy boss battles, a tedious 2nd part of the storyline, and a lack of a true “free roam” mode.

Capcom has done much, much more than just put a camera around a guy's neck and drop him in a mall full of zombies. There's a tightly woven story, the elements of which are actually part of the game...Dead Rising is one of the highest notes of the year, on any platform.

A superb game. Probably the best title on the 360. The flaws are forgivable because it’s simply fun to play. If you are anal for completing a game in its entirety you’ll be on this forever. It’s a practical impossibility to complete all the missions and sub-missions in the 72 hour-mode (it actually lasts about 10 real-time hours).

Chuck N. gave it a10:
Zombies. Great graphic. Free roaming style. Zombies. Many weapons. Many survivors. Zombies. Special Move. Roundhouse kick. Zombies and Roundhouse Kick. My favorite game. Good work, Capcom.

Jason P gave it a10:
A mall filled with an endless horde of zombies, and the ability to use just about anything you come across as a weapon. That's all you need to know to decide whether or not you should give this game a try. Time is crucial to the story; six hours of gameplay fills the main story, assuming you don't have to reload your game. Objectives must be accomplished by a certain time or its game over, but there is usually time between objectives to do some exploring. This setup means its nearly impossible to experience everything your first time through the game. If you really don't like the timed story, an untimed survival mode can be unlocked. Although there are guns, the developers limit their usefulness with difficult/slow controls, forcing you to use melee weapons as well.

Listen U. gave it a3:
This game showed promise, and in theory should be fun. But the CONTROLS are terrible. Really, among the worst I have ever seen in a game. Plus the uber-tiny type made it impossible to read the text. I don't get how so many people like this game... I got so frustrated with the horrid control scheme (specifically combat and guns) that I traded it in after a few hours.

Zach N. gave it a9:
Deadrising is somewhat frustrating because of a overwhelming amount of deadline based objectives. After some getting used to you figure out whats important and what isn't making it a great game especially if you just wanna kill a ton of zombies. And just a note... DEFINITELY a must buy for zombie fans, but does that really need said?

CommandoDude gave it a3:
This. Game. Sucked. Unless you REALLY like zombie games, you will be disappointed. Or at least, I was. At first, it was an interesting game concept, stuck in a mall with zombies, taking pictures of them, trying to uncover some conspiracy. I was quickly disappointed however, by the sheer unrealistic nature of the game, with an endless army of zombies, and stupidly insane combat moves. Not to mention that more then half of the survivors in this mall are somehow deranged psychopaths, and pretty much everyone else is useless. Don't get me started on how hard it is to use guns. I got so fed up with this game I just stopped playing.

Richard S gave it a0:
Wow what a bad game. Easily the worst I have played on the 360, perhaps in any console. The controls are appalling and completely unintuitive. You use different buttons to move the camera and the gun, you cannot move when shooting, the buttons are all wrong. HORRID. Gameplay is boring and repetitive. After the first dozen killed zombies it is boring. WORST GAME EVER.

Karl L gave it a4:
Probably the most frustrating game I have ever played. The game forces you along at its own pace and if you don't go along with it you will miss out on parts of the storyline. Weapons break quickly and without warning and the game then equips you with the next item in your inventory, very annoying when your beating zombies with a bat and when suddenly your character switches to a magazine and gets torn apart. Friendly AI is as brainless as the zombies and loves to get itself killed. Terrible save system that makes you replay huge segments of the game. And cheating boss fights. In the first battle when your shooting your enemy he will simply ignore the fact he is being shot and fire back at you, But when you get shot you stumble around like a retard unable to do anything. Why doesn't this happen to him too? And when attempting to aim with your gun the game will suddenly snap your view to a completely different place then where you were looking, meaning you have to very slowly turn your crosshair back to where it is you wanted to fire.
