Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Originally released in 1993, DOOM introduced millions to the white-knuckle excitement of the First Person Shooter. Relive the classic demon-blasting action, now with up to four players over Xbox Live, 5.1 Surround Sound, and smoother graphics. You're a Marine stationed on Mars when a military experiment goes wrong. Your mission: Blast your way to freedom through the classic world of DOOM. Face off against Hell's army, including stampeding demons, and lay waste to rooms of monsters with an arsenal of classic weapons. Take the deathmatch online via Xbox Live and battle your friends for dominance of the leaderboards. Gameplay: Experience all the classic DOOM levels, monsters, and weapons. Play the entire single-player game solo or in co-op mode via split screen or over Xbox Live. Multiplayer: Play up to four-player deathmatch, either in split-screen or on Xbox Live. Earn achievements and check the leaderboards for the high scores. Next-generation features: With 1080i HD support, 5.1 Surround Sound, and smooth textures, this is DOOM for the next generation. This would have been a ho-hum port of a game that's already been ported to at least a dozen platforms over the years, but it's DOOM's online action which really makes it soar.

DOOM is everything you could have hoped for on the Xbox 360. Is it flawless? No, but it is damn close. Easily the best Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace game out there, Geometery Wars included.

Still brilliant, even by today's standards. [Dec 2006, p.99]

Doom has more personality than "Halo"...you know it's true. [Issue 13, p.116]

At the time this was released, it blew people’s minds and nearly everyone played it. The innovation doesn’t hold a candle to today’s games, but it carries over nicely as an Arcade title.

Doom is the rarest of retro games, in that you can enjoy it just as much as you did when it was first released. Better still, you can appreciate it with the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, and see not only how enormously influential it is, but how perfect its design was from the very beginning.

It's one of the most symbolic, enduring and entertaining games of all time and its transition to Xbox Live Arcade is only let down by the occasional lag of online play.

There is no other shooter that could be more exciting to have on Xbox Live Arcade then Doom.

While other faithful ports of have seen their fair share of action on Live already, Doom trumps them all with its intense action and countless secrets.

DOOM is by far one of the better XBLA titles available on the 360.

Doom does just about everything a port should do. Aside from a few missing options, this is the perfect console version of the game people have wanted for over a decade.

For ten bucks, you get a piece of gaming pie that will feed you again and again. For ten bucks, you get a piece of history. Sure, you may have had a piece of this pie already, but who the hell turns down a slice of extraordinarily delicious pie when their offered it again and again? Not me.

A must-have classic. If you consider yourself a shooter fan, you simply must get this game.

The music is simple. It oozes with fear, anxiety and old horribly compressed technology. In short, it's old but great. Nerve Software even added a few extra little notes here and there, including a few sound effects I've never heard before.

The revolutionary shooter has been adapted to the Xbox 360 in all its archaic glory and, amazingly, is still as fun and visceral as it was all those years ago.

Doom is a commendable first-person shooting opus that's still as fun to play as it was fifteen years ago, even if it might seem a bit prehistoric in comparison to "Call of Duty 2" and "Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter."

When it's on, it's damn fun. Single player is ok but playing co-op with three others is a blast.. when the lag is minimized.

Modern gamers who like to aim up and enter stealth mode will probably turn their nose up at it. Whereas all you gamers in your 20s are probably playing as we type. Now we just want "Doom II."

Doom is still a blast, but it could have been so much more. [Holiday 2006, p.86]
Game Over Online
Online multiplayer is dreadfully slow, both in co-op and deathmatch modes, which brings an unwanted element of luck into the picture. It’s shocking really considering how smoothly this game ran back in 1993 yet with all this newfound processing power and high-speed Internet, the game has the problems it does here.

This Xbox 360 version of the game stays mostly faithful to the original, and it holds up well after all these years.

The controls are intuitive and simplistic with those small details, such as the marine looking around or grinning gleefully when you pick up a new weapon, present and correct. Doom is good value at 800 points and well worth the purchase.

With the exception of an added online multiplayer component, there really isn’t that much of an incentive for those who have played this game at all and aren’t waxing nostalgic.

Doom plays quite well in single player on the 360 thanks to tight controls, crisp (but definitely dated) graphics, and a smooth frame rate. Split screen is also flawless and it’s a blast to play with four people in the same room.

Online play -- including both co-op and the deathmatches that made Doom such a phenomenon in the first place -- can hardly even be considered "play." The lag is unbearable, the framerate excruciating. Aiming is nearly impossible.

David gave it a9:
Great and classic game. Now for the low price of 400 MS points ($5) this is a must own game. It really held up over all these years and brought back a lot of memories. The top two difficulty levels, ultra-violent and nightmare, will surely give hardcore gamers something to master and perfect their scores for the leader boards. The only gripe I have is the online multiplayer.Hardly anyone ever plays online and I imagine it is because of the connection issues. I've only had one really good game that I could actually play without too much lag. Overall though, great purchase for the price, which includes all four episodes; and it's a whole lot of fun.
Anonymous gave it a10:
Way better than crappy Halo. or Call of Duty. The only thing that comes close is Half-Life.
Darrell D. gave it an8:
Some lag and somewhat broken display on a monitor, but still very fun and nostalgic.
Will P. gave it a10:
DOOM still holds up as a great game on the 360. The thing that makes this iteration of DOOM so awesome is the online leaderboards. Even after all the achievements have been earned, its still fun to come back and try to increase your leaderboard rankings.
Chuck P. gave it a6:
Great classic play but inexcusably horrible connection issues make online play frustrating. Lag and disconnects are very common no matter whom you connect to.
Eric S. gave it a10:
There's no question that Doom is underwhelming compared to more modern First Person Shooters. However, there is no denying that it is one of the most games ever released. Every FPS, including Halo and Half-Life, owe a tremendous debt to the game that popularized the genre. Is Doom a better gaem than Halo? Hell no. I won't lie and say Doom is "just as fun today," nor is any game released over a decade ago. But judging by its originality and impact on the industry, Doom is worthy of any gamers respect.
Red XIII gave it an8:
It was great back in the day, still great today. Bonus points for the online play.
