The bottom line is if you're smart enough to read the title, you're smart enough to know what you're buying. So anime fans play to your heart's content. I know I am!

Even though the story modes are really confusing what this series has always relied on is the fun-factor of slicing up hundred of enemies on screen at one time, and that is what DW: Gundam does right. Enjoy it for a couple hours, do some co-op and then move on; that’s about all there is to it.
As for the gameplay, it does just enough to outdo previous Gundam games, though its repetitive nature won't please everyone, and the lack of online play hurts. Still, it does offer a few hours of robot smashing fun.

Hack-n-slash gameplay done right. Thousands of enemies, over a hundred of which can be visible on screen at any given time, and the coolest mobile suits around. If the developers could find a way to prevent the game from becoming repetitive, then the eventual sequel – or the next spin-off – could be amazing.

It can be fun at times, and leveling your pilots up does encourage multiple play throughs, but this game is much more suitable for Gundam enthusiasts than the average gamer.

This is the definition of a niche title. Fans of either series are going to dig it...other gamers, maybe not so much. It's fun for a little while, but not really that great. [Vol 3, Issue 2, p.66]
1UP
Combine that frustration with the almost insultingly shallow combat and it's hard to get too excited about jumping back into the game more than once or twice.

If you enjoy the thought of watching Kamille Bidan and Heero Yui team up to blow away an army of Zakus and Z'Goks, or if you're simply a fan of the hack-and-slash gameplay that the Dynasty Warriors franchise provides, then you could do far worse than Dynasty Warriors: Gundam.

Novelty is a little harder to come by. Dynasty Warriors Gundam doesn't aim to revolutionize either series, but it does represent a single, rocket-fueled step in the right direction.

The backloaded achievements, uninspired gameplay, graphical simplicity, and overall disappointing showing make this a rainy Sunday game even for fans of the Gundam universe.
Despite the dated gameplay, lack of online options and baffling storyline, the game manages to still be fun thanks in no small part to the charm that the Gundam license brings to the title.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam is not a bad game, but it's certainly nothing special, nor will it be as fun for Warriors fans as the real thing.
Read Full Review >Games Radar (in-house)
What you're left with is a basic game that follows in the horde of footsteps of the series that has come before it: it's serviceable but uninspired, and won't do much for you unless you're a big fan of either of the source materials. Predictable, right?

Aside from replacing ancient Chinese warlords with robots from the all-pervasive classic anime series' mythology, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam changes as little as possible. [Oct 2007, p.81]
Team Xbox
Dynasty Warriors Gundam doesn’t stray too much from the classic DW formula, but for hack-and-slash fans, that may not be such a bad thing.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam is just the same old game with new faces and new places. It's repetitive and unimpressive throughout, yet it's oddly addicting.

This game is good for a quick robot violence fix or if you happen to be a huge Gundam fan, but that's about it.

Well, for what it's worth, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam wins the distinction of being the first game that made me fall asleep while playing it. [Sept 2007, p.92]
GameTrailers
North American gamers who aren’t rabid Gundam fans, or Gundam fans that demand at least a solid game experience to go with their giant robots, or even fans of the Dynasty Warriors series should approach this battle with caution – sometimes you have to pick your battles.

I can't say Dynasty Warriors: Gundam is a good game, but it's not a horrible one either.
All together, Dynasty Warriors Gundam is a pretty fun diversion for a few hours or so. It definitely has a long shelf life in your collection, as long as you don't mind the very repetitive style of gameplay that these types of games often represent.

You're expected to know who these characters are, you're expected to know why certain plot twists are a big deal and you're expected to be excited when a character from Zeta Gundam interacts with one from Turn-A Gundam.

A sloppy game. The graphics and audio are below average by today's standards and the gameplay suffers from repetition, lack of strategy, and terrible pacing.

There's something very addictive about taking a mech and doing the Dynasty Warriors thing. [Issue 26, p.98]
Jolt Online Gaming UK
Dynasty Warriors is as stagnated as ever and now carries the weight of a niche franchise upon its back. An overhaul is long overdue.

Really, the best we can say is that it's better than we expected, which isn't exactly a glowing statement, but it's proven that not all of Koei's hack-and-slash games are mind numbingly awful.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam takes the worst elements of both franchises, and smashes them together into a dismally vapid action game.
If you can tolerate endlessly replaying the same levels just to progress, light RPG elements like collecting equipment, acquiring skills, and upgrading pilot and mobile suit levels might make up for some aggravation, but even faithful fans of Gundam and Dynasty Warriors alike won't find much in the way of lasting excitement here.
At the end of the day Dynasty Warriors: Gundam does what it set out to accomplish: mesh two different franchises into a game that is playable but familiar. This game isn't particularly innovative, but at least it gives Gundam fans something.
Read Full Review >360 Gamer Magazine UK
It could have been an excellent action title, but as it is, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam is unlikely to appeal to either Dynasty Warriors fans or Gundam nuts. The gameplay is stale, the AI is bad and the action is repetitive. The strongest part of the package is the mecha and getting into the cockpit is great. It’s just a shame that the rest of the game falls so short.
Xboxic
This kind of fare might have been passable once, but considering the fall lineup for the 360, this game simply doesn’t have the chops to compete on Microsoft’s console.
One feeling I do get from the game is that it is a finished title, and quite a lot of effort has been put into pleasing Gundam fans, the only unfortunate thing is that whilst trying to add in the lore and even upgrades that the player can try to achieve for their mech, the game suffers too much from the over-repetitive.

Middling fun in small doses, but how many times can you play the same game? [Dec 2007, p.85]

Tom E. gave it a7:
As a Gundam fan I was impressed by the breadth of mobile suits represented. I have only the 100,000 units achievement left to get to 1000. I have played with my 5 year old son and it was a great introduction to Gundam for him. Yes it is a bit repetitive but all in all it is enjoyable.
Toby O. gave it a6:
I've played basically every Dynasty Warriors game, and this one's not a bad one. The mechs are something new, and the space battles are novel (while still flat-plane). The area-securing gameplay works well, too. It's a good option when you need a quick melee fix -- after all, DW games are the new(-ish?) Double Dragon. Don't expect much (it's repetitive, doesn't look that great, and is uber-simplistic), and you'll have some fun for a weekend or so.
Noir gave it a7:
Excellent graphics make it seem like you're part of an anime series. Fans of DW won't be disappointed.
Ben W. gave it an8:
It is good fun for fans of Gundam or hack and slash.Little variety other than character changes but what would you expect from a hack and slash. Try the demo before you buy. Huge amount of gameplay.
N S gave it a1:
You just cant put a new dress on an old whore and call her a virgin again. Boring & Uninspired.
Peter L. gave it a3:
its fun for about 5 minutes and then you realize that its the same thing over and over and over
