Summary
Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out "The Jackal," a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit your their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force. Real-time story telling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives. Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat. [Ubisoft]

The objective of Far Cry 2 as a game is to get out of the way and let you experience the game world. And there is no other game world quite like this one: haunting, spectacular, meditative, explosive, violent, and serene, all at once, and all in a mere shooter.

Sure, Far Cry 2 is a bit hardcore, and it's blend of breakneck shooting sequences and more meandering exploration might not be for everyone. However, if you're craving a shooter with a bit more bite than the increasingly casual competition, and one with more substance than the familiar run-and-gun fare, then you'll be hard pressed to beat this content-rich offering.

Far Cry 2 has its annoying quirks, no doubt. But they can be solved via patch – the quality of fights, atmosphere, graphics and gameplay still reaches a very high level.

Great game and one of the best first person shooters of all time with only a few minor issues such as you will always be on the run and sometimes you must travel far distances for missions. But with plenty of weapons, vehicles, zebras, and for you pyromaniacs out there you can do some major damage with fire, there is a lot of fun to be had.

Takes it time which lets players sink deep into the game world. This makes all the difference between a good game and a great one. Far Cry 2 is the latter.

Far Cry 2 is not a game for everybody, neither is it perfect. It requires time, patience and dedication; some will be frustrated with the long car trips - avoidable - while others will struggle with the excessive freedom. Nevertheless the little objections that can be made disappear compared to its virtues. This video game is technically impeccable, it offers a very interesting multiplayer mode, and is equipped with a campaign that should appear in the dictionary under the words intensity and immersion.

Despite some flaws, Far Cry 2 is almost an essential purchase this holiday retail season. The only reason to excuse yourself from picking it up might be if you're just shootered-out, which frankly is an understandable possibility.

I really, really enjoyed Far Cry 2, and I was happy to see that it's a pretty far departure from the formula of the first title. The open world environment is absolutely beautiful at times, and the little touches in the game really help to heighten the sense that you're in a real world setting.

Far Cry 2 is a fantastic game:. The gameplay's great, the environmental execution is near-flawless, but a couple glaring mistakes keep it just shy of perfect.

Far Cry 2 is a game that thrives on the moments and experiences caused by its mechanics working in harmony and by making the player think about where they are and what they are doing. If the player can buy into the world and fiction they will have a thoroughly exciting time surviving through the twisting plot and explosive gun fights.

It’s a shame that more wasn’t done with the story, as the shallow characters and lack of moral depth sits in stark contrast to the hard work spent on some of the most impressive game technology we’ve ever seen.

A superb FPS that plays out on the African continent, one of the most spectacular staging grounds to date. The graphics are exceptional and the multitude of missions and side-quests is big enough to keep you occupied for a long time. The AI are one of the smartest to date, actively using cover and flanking you realistically. Truly a sequel to Far Cry which does the original justice!

Far Cry 2’s gameplay is solid, and it works as both an open world game and a shooter. Its plot is light, but dense, and will make you rethink the way you look at real world conflicts like the ones represented in the game. As with most sandbox titles, there is a huge amount of content, and there is at least twenty hours of gameplay in the single player alone.

The formula still needs work in terms of enemy AI, quest structure, and giving the player more to do to fill in all that open space, but as it is, it's still a standout achievement. More importantly, it has nowhere near as many bugs as something like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, a title that bears many similarities.

Far Cry 2 is a resounding success. It looks incredible, and the attention to detail is staggering. All it really needed was the added spart and thrill of a really, really good shooter underneath it all. But if you can live with the game's start/stop gunplay you're going to have some real fun playing with fire. [Jan 2009, p.78]
GameTrailers
The action is high-quality, free-roaming stuff, and the game earns major points for its smart way of dealing with getting shot up, patched up, and bailed out. The story does keep you on a leash and your objectives tend to repeat without too much variation, but if you enjoy this line of work, Far Cry 2's dangerous African landscape is a great place to be a merc.

The biggest disappointment is that the six character classes, experience-based upgrades, and full-featured level editor can't elevate online play past the sheer rote familiarity of deathmatch, capture the flag, and control-point variations. But even though Far Cry 2 isn't quite a sandbox-shooter masterpiece, it is a consistently fun and intensely challenging trek into the ailing heart of the dark continent.

Unfortunately, it’s these failings that defined our experience of the game, though for anyone keen to sample a shooter that dares step into the leftfield we recommend endeavouring to get to the heart of what feels like an uncut diamond – rough-shorn but not bereft of value.

Even if I find the multiplayer too staid, I find the possibility of cool user-made levels (via the easy map editor) tantalizing. Like any good Grand Theft Auto, Far Cry 2's overall package makes up for any individual flaws -- enough for it to be on a short list of best FPS games this year -- and so it's fitting to summarize it as...well, GTA: Mogadishu.

Far Cry 2 is unforgettable rather than perfect, then; brilliant, frustrating, sombre and comical, it offers freedom within extremely curtailed limits, and strives to treat its players like adults. In the end it remains, true to its source material, a game that was born to struggle with itself.
Ubisoft has managed to strike some potent emotional chords with Far Cry 2. Combined with the depth and breadth of the sweeping African environment, they may very well be enough to overcome a combat system that isn’t nearly as intricate as the game world in which it is housed.
The combat feels haphazard, reckless. The voice acting is flat and emotionless. There is a shallower sense of progression, and far fewer opportunities to make meaningful choices. Granted, it is unfair to compare an action game and an RPG too closely. Yet with "Fallout 3" still fresh in our minds, so many of the design decisions in Far Cry 2 seemed off-balance.

Combat is thrilling – each weapon packing a solid, vicious blast; movement suggesting heft and momentum. [Dec 2008, p.80]
360 Gamer Magazine UK
Despite hitting many highs that are far beyond the ambitions of nearly every other game on the 360, Far Cry 2 is slightly hamstrung by its own ambition, some design missteps and a learning curve that rolls itself into a handy noose. Like Africa itself, it’s beautiful, complex and massive. However, less methodical or patient gamers may find themselves questioning where the line between ‘challenging’ and ‘pain in the ass’ is actually drawn.
Boomtown
And there's very little to touch it in graphical terms on a console. So if you're a graphics whore and a fan of action go right ahead, most gamers will enjoy Far Cry 2, just don't expect something as cerebral as the hype has lead you to believe.
Far Cry 2 doesn't quite live up to its expectations, but its in total a great shooter with more freedom then you can chew. It scores extra points with the original setting and superb transition from real life to your tv. True, the leveld esign could have been more creative, the storyline with a little bit more depth and the thousand and one control points a little less annoying, because that's the reason why Far Cry doens't get that monster score.
Technical issues aside, Far Cry 2 is an epic (and epic-ly long) take on the first-person shooter. The setting, open word, and side quests make it feel more like a more action-oriented "Grand Theft Auto," or a less ridiculous "Just Cause," than the original. Which, admittedly, will annoy fans of the original (present company included).

Ambition at the expense of excellence. [Dec 2008, p.116]
Meristation
Better than an excellent game, Far Cry 2 is an excellent idea of a game. Despite of its poor AI and repetitive mission design, Ubisoft's new proposal delivers a solid shooter in a beautifully rendered open-world environment that packs some fun for the not so demanding player. Although better than the previous installments in the series it just comes up short of its and ours expectations. Rental recommended.

Despite some of its technical issues and repetitiveness, I feel compelled to play this game until I finish the entire single-player campaign. Each mission means you work your ass off and that makes a nice change over the traditional FPS formula.

There's a lot to do in Far Cry 2, and if you can get a good handle on the quirks of the almost constant combat scenarios you'll run into, the weapons variety, stunning visuals, and originality of the story and setting make for a well-rounded and satisfying shooter.

A great game that does everything a first-person shooter should. It has a great presentation, good shooting mechanics, decent AI, a long single player experience, impactful choices, an enormous multiplayer component, and some of the more memorable injury scenes ever witnessed in a videogame. The pitfalls come with the redundancy of some missions, the sparsely populated world, and awkward saving system that can often throw players miles away from objectives with nothing but a long, pointless drive to look forward to.

Far Cry 2 manages to lend the open world of typical RPG:s and mend it into a first person shooter. The trouble is that the game's world isn't properly adapted to the openness of the gameplay, leading to lots of tedious stretches of transportation. A somewhat silly AI and extremely tough enemies dampens what is otherwise a really competent shooter.

Some games grow on you the more you play them, as you get used to the little idiosyncrasies and learn to appreciate the finer points. Overated Game gave it a1:
Let me sum up this game for you: Get a mission (choose from up to 4 variations!), spend 25 minutes driving (with one of the most boring driving sequences in any game), shoot the same people the same way for 5 minutes (YOU WANT STEALTH?! FUCK YOU. RUN AND GUN FAGGOT), spend another 25 minutes driving back, rinse and repeat. Oh and don't forget the LOL FIRE gimmick. This one game pretty much cemented in my mind the fact that high acclaim reviewers accept large bags of money from publishers. As is the case with Ubisoft and any reviewer that gave this game above 60%. I wanted to stay naive and believe that all reviewers had sense and some degree of taste, but Far Cry 2 reviews ruined that for me. tl;dr Please, do not buy this game. There are so many better options than this shit. Not even Steam's CRAZY $10 sale price (a few days ago) should be enough to persuade you to actually purchase this. Don't tolerate this kind of half-assry. If you absolutely have to play this, pirate it. Then again, it's not even worth the bandwith so don't. Anyone who praises this game doesn't know what a good game is. One of the most overrated games of the last five years. For a more in depth review check Rowan's comment.
Edward S gave it a1:
How did this game get so many 100/100 reviews?! The graphics are good, but all the graphics in the world can't make up for the fact that this game sucks! The story is non-existent. The gameplay is repetitive. The enemy AI is ridiculously bad. There's just nothing redeeming here. I bought this game for $20 on sale. It was a rip off.
B R gave it a6:
Great Idea but unfortunatelly not the best execution.Game is frustrating and has bugs.AI not the best.Graphics are very nice.
Fuzzy Man gave it an8:
The first thing i would like to state about this game is that it is completely different from Far Cry 1. It carries no similarities whatsoever. Now that that's over with I must agree with the majority of the critics and users that this game has a problem that is found in many other Ubisoft games such as Assassin's Creed & Prince of Persia, it's too dawn repetetive. Ignore the statement on the back of the cover that says FC2 has an immersive storyline. All you do is go and blow $#@* up 'cause some guy or some girl tells you too. If it's not about blowing something up, then it's about shooting someone in the face and then crying as you see that you're about to be annhialated by a horde of trigger-happy Africans who all have Jeeps. That's how almost every mission ends. The plot is incredibly disjointed and poorly written. The gameplay although fun, due to the array of guns you have at your disposal, it still becomes repetitive. What you will be doing most of the time is driving around an empty savannah for 20 mins. then discover a guard outpost and fight them for 15 mins. Now just repeat that wonderful formula 300 times and you have a game! Despite all of this the single player is still fun if only because you can shell outposts with mortars and then watch as everything burns in sight (by the way the fire in this game looks spectacular), or you can go into a ceasefire zone and camp on a building with a sniper rifle and see how long you can survive. The multiplayer in this game is very weak since it only has 4 modes and only one of them is interesting: Uprising. Besides that the stiff aiming controls are not great in multiplayer, even though they were passable in singleplayer. The definite strongpoint of this game and the reason for me giving it an 8 is the map editor. It is absolutely fantastic. Not only can you place whatever items you desire like buildings, trees, boats and even sacks of potatoes but also you can shape the environment in whatever way you want, be it flat or ridiculously mountainous. Just go online and see at some of the maps people created like the Eiffel Tower, or Twin jumbo jets. As a finisher this game is not bad the single player is fun but repetitive, multiplayer sucks especially if you've played CoD 4, and the map editor is awesome and puts other map editors like Halo 3's Forge to shame. Go give this game a rent, you might like it.
Ciaran G gave it a4:
Only good things I can think of about the game are the realistic graphics, the fantastic map editor and the fun online play. Unfortunately, the single-player mode is seriously flawed in various ways. One of the most annoying things about this game is that every single human being in the game that isn't white or living in a town is out to kill you, almost like zombies. On sight of you, even from a distance they make it their mission to follow you and kill you. This poses problems, especially when you are in a mission or when you are trying to get from one place to the next. It seems that everyday civilians have completely vanished off the face of the Earth in this game and have been replaced by blood-thirsty savages. The game had the potential to tell a story of a practically lawless land and the corrupt arms dealers that make huge profits by having people kill each other, but it is ruined by flawed gameplay. The driving physics are poor and the incredible environments are ruined by a lack of things to actually do apart from going on missions that involve killing people and collecting diamonds! A frustrating game - not worth getting.
jake d gave it a4:
The essence of Far Cry 2 is in no way distilled from the original game, Im unsure if its the political message they are attempting to get across or that someone decided that killing the same 3-4 guys over and over again is a great idea. The missions as listed below are stale and repetitive, none of them stand out as being unique imaginative or able to carry interest. The overall story is not impressive and fails to inspire me to continue playing to 'find out what happens'. The driving in this game is TEDIOUS no jumps, no tricks, no radio, this wouldnt be so bad except you are going to be doing an awful lot of it. Id rate this game a 3 except i hear it has great player made content, it is technically proficient but has lost its soul, and lost touch for what is fun and exciting and decide to follow a path of drudgery and tedium. Even at 15$ i feel ripped off.
Dan W gave it a3:
I got this cheap this week for 9 quid, severely disappointed. The only thing it's got going for it is the environment/graphics, everything else is totally flawed. the mission structure just grates, its a case of wondering round through the jungle to get to the mission, fair enough if the wondering didn't last the best part of 15 minutes. along the way you encounter swathes of guys with guns and in jeeps. this makes driving virtually impossible as you get 100m down the road and get ambushed by another gang of non-descript enemies. this would almost be tolerable if 1. your gun didnt jam every few minutes leaving you to be mullered and killed, 2. the stupid malaria gimmick didnt kick in making it impossible to focus for a few seconds and 3. the driving controls were actually any good. they aren't they are absoloutley dire. so you get killed and you'd think you'd be respawned in a reasonable place right? wrong. you have to restart from the last save point and hence go through the rigmorall of chancing it past the same baddies which endlessly respawn in the same places. the mission structure itself is also boring as hell, it's kill these guys or blow up that truck or collect this item. THAT'S IT! all in all this game is severely flawed in so many ways it is totally unplayable. how anyone could stick with it enough to completion is beyond me. it's not even worth a fiver second hand, seriously save your blood pressure and never play this. God knows how it averaged 85% on metacritic, I'd rate this at 30% at best. sure it's pretty and technically an acheivement, but where's the fun? GAMES ARE MEANT TO BE FUN, that's why we play them!
