Summary
FIFA Soccer 07 on the Xbox 360 moves away from the traditional animation-based game engine and now enables raw physics and data to drive the action, creating true-to-life movement and the most advanced visuals seen in a soccer game. Player characteristics are based on brand-new traits and twice the number of attributes, so you won't see two players moving in exactly the same way. Instead they look and behave like the athletes we see gracing the pitch week-in, week-out. Improved fundamental controls that are easy to pick-up-and play but difficult to master and enhanced AI enable you to truly enjoy the virtual recreation of the beautiful game. The ball and players react to your slightest touch with an unprecedented level of responsiveness, giving you complete control. For the first time ever the ball is alive with its own independent physics, resulting in truly unpredictable gameplay. Now any type of pass or shot is possible and goals will feel natural and unique. Using the physics-based and data-driven technology, the FIFA Soccer 07 engine creates a wealth of data that gives you the power to make real tactical decisions when managing your players. FIFA Soccer 07 offers never-before-experienced real-time player analysis. Monitor each player’s performance in the game by viewing complete passing, shooting and defending stats. Detailed feedback pinpoints where the player was located on the pitch and his contribution to the match. Now you can make informed decisions during halftime with the aid of this in-depth match analysis, enabling you to locate problem areas in both attack and defense. Check the areas of possession to make subtle adjustments to your play and spot defensive weaknesses in the opposition. All the shots, assists and goals are marked out so you can see who did the most damage. [Electronic Arts]

Everything in this soccer installment -- from the nimble online play (which now supports 2 versus 2 matches via Xbox Live) to the challenging set of achievements -- is well executed. Too bad every annual installment doesn't show this much improvement.

It’s the best game of soccer available on the “next-gen” console and one of the best soccer titles to date.

It's rare to see a game with so much polish pull it off in gameplay terms too, but FIFA 07 really is a fantastic piece of work.

Many of the new features are well-received and while the others will take some getting used to, this is undoubtedly a move forward for the franchise.

A good, but not brilliant game. It's a vast improvement over last year's FIFA 06 and plays slightly better than 2006 FIFA World Cup. While gameplay wise it's still not quite up there with Pro Evo 6 it comes closer than ever before this time around.

The good news is that FIFA 07 is undoubtedly the best Xbox 360 game in the series to date. The bad news is that, in some ways, it's still inferior to its PlayStation 2 and Xbox counterparts.

If you like football games and you want to be impressed by something that plays fantastically well and looks next generation, then this is without doubt a fine purchase and a big step in the right direction for the FIFA series.

Those looking for the most complete and best playing soccer game this year will still want to grab FIFA Soccer 07 for the big black box.

With its unmatched visuals, its superior soundtrack, its pleasant presentation and it’s much improved game play, FIFA 07 is a welcome addition to the football genre.

But as much as we wanted to hail EA's proactive progressive approach to FIFA as the great slayer of Konami's complacency, the fact remains that "PES6" is marginally the better game in ways that matter.

Massive improvements to the animation and the ball physics help to free the series, and make ever-increasing strides in closing the gap between it and Konami's Pro Evo Soccer. That said, there's definitely room for improvement, most notably in the number of leagues, the player models, and all-round audio.

A solid effort. The one-on-one shooter vs. goalie during loading screens is enough fun to warrant this one a rental all by itself.

If you’re a soccer game fan, then you’ll either really enjoy this game, or really hate it. If you only have a 360, then it’s a definite must buy as a soccer fan. However, if you also have an Xbox or PS2, I have to recommend that you stick to the last-gen version.

FIFA matches tend to be something of a goal-fest - thanks in no small part to some truly myopic goalkeepers. [Issue 17, p.64]
Game Chronicles
I will assume the reason features are being stripped from EA games on 360 is due to disc space issues. Do we really need to have space eating video highlight reels?

The controls still don’t feel right and dribbling can be a bit awkward but these are issues that don’t really cripple the gameplay.

Winning Eleven may still be a more joyful celebration of the sport, but FIFA 07's beauty and fluidity mark it as the early champ of the next generation. [Holiday 2006, p.74]
MS Xbox World
A fantastic start for FIFA 07, but will need some tweaking and perfecting in FIFA 08 to really bring over the doubters.

FIFA 07 is an evolutionary step in the transition to next-gen gaming. Those looking for a revolutionary leap will have to wait at least another year.

All in all, I found myself jumping for joy after a hard fought goal more often than I found myself wanting to headbutt my 360 out of frustration like Zinedine Zidane.

If you take into account FIFA 06 being the worst title and FIFA World Cup/Pro Evolution being the best FIFA 07 falls somewhere in between.

As enjoyable as any of the FIFA incarnations, but it just has not reached the level of simulation that hardcore soccer hooligans are looking for.

FIFA 07 represents the best soccer you can play on the Xbox 360, but falls short of the bar set by Konami and, ironically enough, EA itself.
Add in the fact that this game features a paltry six international leagues (as opposed to the over 20 of some past FIFAs), the double-team defensive feature still doesn’t work, players’ collision fields are too large, the AI shows very little movement in the box on your corner kicks, and that shots and passes have little accuracy, and you’ll find that this game has taken steps back which counter its promising progress – not unlike the American national squad.

Every aspect that "works" has a few that just don't, to the game's overall detriment.

The beautiful game goes next-gen with stunning visuals, but sadly doesn't follow through with a less than solid gameplay and simplistic online play.

Some nice touches give FIFA a commanding presence, but an unfinished feel hurts it. [Christmas 2006, p.94]
Games Radar (in-house)
We would have liked for this year's 360 FIFA 07 to combine all the best parts of its current-gen cousins and its older World Cup brother; rather, we got a good, not great, title that in several ways is outshined by those same games.

I appreciate the effort that has gone into re-making the game engine from the ground up for the new generation of consoles, and giving the ball independent physics is a step forward, but apart from the presentation everything else is a step back.

In the end, FIFA 07 is a passable soccer game, equal parts soccer glory and frustrating gameplay issues.

FIFA looks incredible but follows EA Sport's 360 trend--the next-gen product possessing a fraction of what the current-gen version offers. [Dec. 2006, p.126]
1UP
It's solid, but its subtle gameplay stutters make us hesitate to recommend it too strongly -- and all the more impatient for Winning Eleven's next iteration.
The game suffers from far too many core gameplay problems for it to be a worthy contender to "PES 6," and it's only really the online play that is worth investing any time in. You can have a decent few hours playing online or perhaps with friends that don't know any better, but EA needs to change things considerably next year.

A promising start for EA's new FIFA engine, if they can iron out its problems FIFA 08 could be a killer game, but until then it’s still a long way behind Konami’s offering.

FIFA 07 will still please enthusiasts with its enhanced ball control and realistic play, but it’s hard to validate this game as "the season" when it would have benefited from more seasoning.

Better than expected, but we weren't expecting much. With some tightening, Pro Evo vs. Fifa could be close next year. [Issue 13, p.91]
games(TM)
While it’d be wrong to criticise EA for encouraging a passing game, abhorrent ‘trick stick’ dribbling assistance is far too jerky to be of any use, making all too many games a pretty, but nevertheless staid, midfield slog. [Dec 2006, p.119]

Niels T. gave it an8:
At the end of the day, it's a pretty solid game. New gameplay and a good carrer mode, makes up for a bit lacking game.
Jamie A. gave it a10:
This is my favourite soccer game to date, it totally obliterates PES. I love everything about FIFA 07 except for the the fact that the Portuguese League is missing.
Soccer Boy gave it a10:
Awesome game but sort of hard to shoot, the aiming control is very sensitive.
Teena B. gave it a9:
It takes time to learn the mechanics but when you do -- wow! It feels natural. I think EA has a winner. Just add PKs from World Cup game and Interactive Leagues and you'll have a homerun.
A M gave it an8:
This game is underratted. The problem is you have to turn off passing assistance so that the game beomes more free. You can adjust the defensive auto-switch as prefered. Passing is encouraged and it's best to lay off the sprint button unless you're going in a straigth line as it make it harder to control. Game will be low scoring and more realistic. FIFA 07 is now a much better competitor to PES/Winning 11 in terms of gameplay and has awesome visuals and sound. The only negative is limited leagues and stadiums, but all the important ones are there anyway...
Tim gave it a9:
put in the time and effort to build your skills and this game will kick any other soccer game out there, this coming from a pro evo die hard, 9 outta 10
Super yoma gave it an8:
It is interesting to see higher ratings given by the European magazines than the American magazines. The true understanding of how to play the beautiful game is evident. I think EA has made some serious strides and are setting 08 to be an amazing game. PES had better get some licenses or they could be in some serious trouble in this war.
