Summary
On the pitch, critical gameplay fundamentals have been enhanced to ensure that FIFA Soccer 10 mirrors real-world soccer, providing more sophisticated ball control, and physical interaction between players. In addition, players now move, behave and position themselves more realistically. On attack, players analyze space more effectively, curve their runs in an attempt to stay onside, create passing lanes naturally, and drive for more variety in attacking options. On defense, new concepts like position priority enable defenders to multitask so dangerous spaces left open by teammates out of position are covered. Plus, slide tackle targeting, press marking, and better-urgency clearance logic provide new options that make defending a tactical skill in FIFA Soccer 10. In goal, a myriad of improvements and refinements to goalkeeper intelligence result in a more responsive and powerful rushing system and ultra-realistic saves. Better balance on lofted through balls, improved goalkeeper intelligence, more realistic shooting mechanics with less shots hitting the goal posts, a practice arena to perfect skills, and a more immersive soccer experience through continuous play and quick free kicks are just a few of the issues raised by fans and addressed in FIFA Soccer 10. Three new innovations revealed today at E3 have been developed to change the player control experience in FIFA Soccer 10. The first-ever true 360 degree dribbling system gives players finer control of the ball, enabling them to find spaces between defenders that previously were not possible. Using an all-new animation technology, skilled dribblers now have the ability to face the defender and use highly responsive lateral dribbling to skip past him. An innovative concept called Freedom in Physical Play enables players to perform wider dribble touches and new collision sharing creates a varied, less predictable, and extended fight for possession between the dribbler and a defender. FIFA Soccer 10 also features a deeper iteration of the ever-popular Manager Mode with more than 50 major improvements, including new match realism, realistic player transfers based on multiple decision points, and true-to-life player growth curves. FIFA 10 is all the best a football fan could imagine, you simply have to have it. The score is the right prize for a nearly perfect game that deserves the right prize for the work done in the last years that brought the average arcade game of the past, to the nearest thing to real football actually available. You'll stop playing FIFA 10 only when FIFA 11 will be on shelves. Great job EA, great job Moore, great job Rutter. You have to play it!

Overall FIFA 10 plays a much more varied, fluid, and believable game of football, which easily sets a new standard in the genre. We spent a fair amount of time between matches wondering what it takes for a football game to get a 10 and we're inclined to believe Rutter and his team have actually achieved it this year. It's a marked improvement over last year's 9 rating and undoubtedly provides the finest videogame take on football so far.

At the end of the sporting day, EA Sports have truly put their FIFA soccer series on the next tier and the new 360 control system is definitely the best change of this franchise in years.

EA has really outdone themselves. Konami's Pro Evo/Winning Eleven does provide some good competition, but only in the actual gameplay category.

The series still has some room to improve, and that alone should be a scary piece of info for all the haters and the competition overall. Perfection might be impossible, but FIFA 10 is as close as it gets.

EA Sports nailed almost every aspect of the game: FIFA 10 is pure soccer, or at least the nearest thing we can find in a video game. 25 championships, new modes and a perfect multiplayer make it a must have.

A fantastic game. It improves upon last year's version in several ways, making this the best soccer simulator to ever hit store shelves. Whether you bought the game or not last year, it's definitely time to upgrade.

One of the most refined, polished and compelling takes on the beautiful game – and arguably of any given sport. While this year’s improvements might seem slight on paper, each one is perfectly pitched and works together to create an experience that’s an improvement on last year’s game in every conceivable way.

This is undoubtedly the best FIFA game ever made, and by far the most accurate virtual depiction of this magical sport.

Electronic Arts believed that 2010 could have been the right year for the definiteve soccer simulation. It's almost true, although FIFA 10 still has some little flaws, as seen with the goalkeepers. On the other hand 360° dribbling, Live Season 2.0, new physics and a lot of other stuff should be enough to point out who's going to be the champion for this year, and that the developers have done a remarkable job on their baby.

I can't say enough about how much fun FIFA Soccer 10 can be once you get into it. I never thought that I would be a soccer fan, but after playing this title I honestly believe there is room (sorry 'curling' you're out of the top ten). Try it out and enjoy it.

Soccer fans should finally be happy with what EA Sports has given them. The FIFA series is now back to its glory PS2/Xbox days and there is so much to do here. Virtual Pro options alone will occupy you for long periods of time and the on the field action sees the series soaring to new heights. This is without a doubt the best soccer game in a long time and one that every fan should own.

Rather than merely adhering to a score like a Metacritic slave, I will say this: FIFA 10 plays a better, more realistic game of football than any football game that has come before it. To do this it has had to take some subtle liberties, but the overall outcome - as we stated up front - is the best footy game of its time. Until next year, or - our sadly frequent disclaimer - if Konami pulls Pro Evolution out of its funk.

An excellent update to FIFA 09. Small refinements across the board for a much more precise and controlled soccer experience, that really plays like it should. EA has done it again, the improved AI and ball handling really helps to immerse the player, providing us with one of the most realistic and detailed soccer titles to date.

With FIFA 10 the main focus for EA was to focus on improving on things suggested by fans of the series, a wise when looking at the final product. Gameplay on the field is finally solid enough to be thoroughly enjoyable and the still brilliant Virtual Pro mode, solid online mode, more realistic manager mode and sofa serving Lounge mode all make this one great soccer experience. We'd still like to see less rigid ball physics, greater differences between players and faster pacing on the field, but this year EA finally got it right.

Having convincingly overtaken its main rival last year, FIFA 10 nevertheless consolidates its lead with great authority. Last year, I said FIFA feels like football, rewards football, and punishes football for football reasons. The difference between FIFA 09 and FIFA 10 is that the latter knows exactly where the former fell short of that, and makes up the distance in almost every case.

FIFA 10 is clearly a tribute to real soccer. The minor changes since the last entry might be difficult to spot (except for the 360 degree dribbling and the new defense pressing system), but make this an even better game than it was.

FIFA 10 adding new dynamic dribbling to its already refined passing game is like adding Ronaldo to Chelsea. It makes a winning formula that much better. A brilliant, championship-conquering football game.

FIFA 10 is a great football game. On almost every level it outclasses its predecessor, and that was already a fantastic game. The 360-degrees-system, the emphasis on physical elements and the improved passing-abilities ensure that this game appears even more realistic on your screen. FIFA 10 is the definitive soccer experience if there ever was one. It packages a list of modes that perform in wonderful harmony with one another thanks to Virtual Pro and the fact that the gameplay lives up to this praise should only sweeten the deal.

The expected trickle of tweaks implemented has turned into a torrent, and all across the board there are improvements. As a football game, this is the best of the bunch, and a great experience.

This is still a great game of football and has a few neat improvements over last year's offering. However, the 360 degree control hardly seems groundbreaking and the rest of the package seems amazingly familiar. For all those that picked up the game last year, it will seem like very little has emerged to justify another full price release.

From a strictly footballing point of view, FIFA 10 has once again cemented the series’ position as the football game of choice by succeeding in taking the genre forward as EA Canada – seemingly by themselves these days – comes ever closer to capturing what is so alluring about The Beautiful Game.

I love the new dribbling system and many of the other improvements that FIFA 10 brought to the table this year, but in the end it's unforgivable for a developer to harm an online mode so blatantly and for a glitch to literally bring down the house on what is arguably the game's most important mode.

In a way, the main reason I'm somewhat disappointed is that developer EA Canada has the tough part down: the gameplay and controls. But soccer is about so much more than that -- it's about patriotism, atmosphere, and passion. For the inevitable World Cup follow-up, I'd really like to see those elements shine through -- and it wouldn't hurt to not ship with so many bugs, either.

Daniel G. gave it a4:
Multiplayer is fun but manager mode is near unplayable after a couple of seasons due to obscene number of bugs. At the moment in premier league on manager mode playing against a Hull City in 6th and a Hull city in 18th both with the same record and number of points while the real Hull City is in the championship.
Sean gave it a9:
This is just a blast to play with friends though I get my ass whooped all the time. I did wish the passing was a little tighter as I found the game doing the opposite of what I told it to do, but maybe thats just my suckiness coming through.
Martin G gave it a6:
most has been said already: manager mode is full of bugs, even after the update. Scoring goals is also very unrealistic, chipping and free kicks far to easy. They seem unnessary and unbelievable faults, considering the amounts of money EA Fifa is dealing with. Dissapointing, Fifa09 is the better deal.
Brandon S gave it a6:
Imagine the best painting in the world. Now imagine that, to spice things up, the creator decided that every few seconds the painting would release tear gas sending viewing the painting into the agony of inflamed eyeballs. Then as they lay there trying to enjoy the painting with their vision blurred from toxic gas. The painting then starts swinging around the room to make the viewing experience dynamic and exciting. THATS Fifa 10. The best sports game available. However it's marred by horrible design decisions made to make the game "challenging". Everything thats great about it can and will altered to insure that theres another obstacle in your way so the CPU can keep the game "exciting". You will play 4 games overcoming the common problems but on that 5th game the controls will mysteriously turn to mush. It's like a brand new game. It's that last and greatest level of desperate AI cheating. It will destroy your ability to enjoy the game. They take the core mechanics of the game and make it all unresponsive on purpose. Just think about that. And while you're at it, avoid this game.
Gene M gave it a2:
Defensive AI will play like a U11 team unless you are on World Class, and then the CPU offense is too good for all but the most serious FIFA player. Physics still has a way to go to match PES. CPU teammates will ignore the ball if not from a pass or cross (shot deflection will roll right by a CPU player and they will show no interest). Still no resolution to the auto-switch problem. Too many bugs to count, especially in Manager Mode. Lounge Mode is still not hooked into the player sign-ons. At least they added a training mode (try to find it though!) and fixed the throw-ins and most goal keeper issues. It's amazing to me that game reviewers write glowing reviews of this game year after year seemingly without digging deeper than a single match and no knowledge of the Beautiful Game.
Jake P gave it a10:
This is easily the best soccer game ever made! First off, the gameplay is magnificent. There is now 360 degrees dribbling as opposed to the old eight direction dribbling systerm. The graphics are great but could be a little better. The celebrations are great and very realistic. Second of all, the arena mode is fantastic! It allows you to work on your skills and just have a little fun with 1v1, free kick practice, practice match, and set piece creator. The manager mode is not amazing but it is definitely worth a few seasons. Finally, the virtual pro is very fun although uploading the gameface is much too difficult. EA could have made it a lot simpler. Overall, this is the best soccer game out there right now and is definitely worth the money!
Andy K gave it a10:
I played this game on the Nintendo Wii and I thought oh no what have they done to Fifa, it was truly awful and I mean awful. Then I went to across to the rather expensive world of Xbox 360 and bought this with some reservations after the Wii outing but then when I turned it on and started playing, WOW. This is what Fifa is all about. The closest you'll get to playing in real life. Perfect in every area. Well done EA Sports.
