Summary

After being promoted by Michael Corleone to Don of New York, players expand to new cities, as they build up their families through extorting businesses, monopolizing illegal crime rings and defeating new families in an effort to become the most powerful mob family in America. To help players manage their empire, The Godfather II introduces "The Don's View" – an innovative strategy meta-game that allows players to oversee the entire world as they grow the family business. Using the Don's View, players will be able to build, defend and expand their crime rings, while keeping an eye on the movements and plans of the rival families. Players will also learn to master the business of organized crime by building a family of Made Men, hiring crew, handing out orders, and promoting their best men up the ranks. Set in a stunning open-world environment, The Godfather II expands on the popular gameplay mechanics of the first game and doubles down on the series' signature BlackHand control scheme, which now features even more visceral hand-to-hand brutality at your fingertips, introducing a new combo system, pressure tactics and executions. In The Godfather II, players fight alongside their hand-picked crew, who have their own skills and expertise. Each family member specializes in a specific field such as demolitions, arson, engineering, first-aid and more. As The Don you control the family, sending some of your men on missions while heading off into action with others. The combination of strategic organized crime gameplay and brutal BlackHand action promises to set The Godfather II apart from other open-world games. Play The Godfather II online multiplayer modes and become the true Don of Dons. Take your money, weapons, and crew from your single-player experience online and wage mob warfare against up to 16 players from around the world. Play as one of the family’s crew specialists and put your best strategies to the test as you take over territory and strike back at rivals. Earn upgrades and money that can be used in your single-player experience. [Electronic Arts]

The Godfather II is a great sequel, expanding on the content of the original game while making some fine additions to the formula. While the story elements aren’t too impressive and there are some design quirks, the gameplay is deep and engaging, and easily recommendable for fans of the original game or of the sandbox-action game genre.

Conceptually, The Godfather II has the potential to be an amazing game. However, the somewhat dated visuals, coupled with the occasional mission-ending glitches, and the relatively ease of the strategy component mean that The Godfather II is a good game but one that doesn’t fully live up to its potential.

The Godfather 2 is a quite good, but too short GTA-style virtual criminal's sandbox. It doesn't look as impressive as "GTA IV", nor does it have as many things to do as "Saint's Row 2." [Mar 2009]

It's a fun single player adventure with an equally entertaining multiplayer mode full of 16 player death matches. Players who enjoyed the first should find the sequel to be much more unique than the original. The strategic action and management combination that The Godfather 2 proposes is a remarkable formula, but also risky. Maybe it won't be able to convince gamers looking for an action game, nor those looking for strategy, but our feeling is that ultimately this is an action game -a good one- with interesting strategy elements, more than the contrary.

The Godfather II is not a game that should be played because it is “bigger and better” than its predecessor, as it is certainly not as long or as deep an experience, but instead it should be at least given a chance for its satisfying and plentiful on-foot action sequences and the addictive new strategy and resource-management elements which The Don’s View brings to the table.

This sequel does manage to do a couple of things right. The strategic elements are interesting, the sound is great and the way you overlook your influence in the different cities is implemented in an impressive way. Since both the presentation and gameplay feels dated you're better off waiting for upcoming gangster related games.

The Godfather II is a technically flawed game. Glitches, pop up, framerate drops are quite frequent and the soulless sandbox world isn’t too appealing either. The upside is the strategic element of the game. It’s fun to coordinate attacks on rival families and to take over businesses by using excessive force. All in all it’s great fun if you’re not turned of by the technical issues.

The film truly is a millstone around the game's neck. If this game was called Cosa Nostra or Organised Crime 101 (or something similar) it would feel like a far stronger title altogether. Godfather II works quite well as a gangster manager, but fails to deliver as a GTA-style sandbox. Its technical side is poor in all sections and despite the fact that we have plenty of options to gain control of the cities, it soon becomes repetitive. The Godfather 2 is a great game in a lousy shell. If EA turned around and made the third entry in this series into a competent sandbox shooter and improved on the Don’s View mode, making it more useful and adding more depth to it, dropping the Godfather movie tie-ins, it would be a lot easier to recommend. As it stands now, you can find games that do what this game tries to do a lot better.

The Godfather II represents for many aspects a missed chance, especially regarding the new management part, too superficial and unsatisfying. The technical aspects perfectly line up with the overall mediocrity of this new EA Games production, but the action part revealed to be quite fun, especially the executions, even if it gets quickly old due to its repetitiveness. The game doesn't live up to the higher standards of some of the latest EA Games productions, and for a brand like this it's a real pity.

Most of this game’s content is in betrayal of the license, and it’s not all smut, either. A good idea that turned into a bad game. The Don's View has potential, but with a very low difficulty you can take over where and whenever you like. In the end, it appears that The Godfather II was rushed out the door and as a result it fails in many areas. The actual framework here could have made for a great title – it has all the key ideas – but by making it so easy to bypass elements of the game, and having it so criminally easy, then there’s little to encourage you to play through again, if you bother completing it the first time.

Brilliant concepts ham-handedly executed. All I could think of after finishing the game was poor Fredo standing in the house in Nevada whining, "I'm smart! Not like everybody says... like dumb... I'm smart and I want respect!" Respect has to be earned, and The Godfather II doesn't even come close.

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 6.8 (out of 10) based on 29 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

Mike O gave it a9:
Having played the single player campaign pretty much straight for 3 days I was impressed. My friend had said he got bored and found it repetive but I thought this was a brilliant game. Having never played the first game I found this one innovative and original with a decent storyline, even if it lacked a back story for those of us who aren't familiar with the films or games previously. I loved being able to control so many aspects of my own empire and loved the neat touch of the full character creation. I think the rating of the 60's is very harsh to what is a decent free-roamer but with a good accompanying story line. It's no San Andreas but then it doesn't try to be, it's a good original idea which I feel has been executed well.

Sam G. gave it a6:
Some innovative concepts but they're not executed well. Less than stellar gameplay, sub-par visual presentation and animations, poor narrative and story elements, and tiny and lifeless maps.

Zack S gave it a9:
After i beat the game i said to myself hey ill go give it a good score on metacritics. I also thought to myself that it would be in the 90's or 80's but the 60's really? This game is absolutely amazing one of the greatest games to come out in a really long time. Everyone should give this game a chance its epic!

Thomas M gave it an8:
As a fan of the first game i was somewhat dissapointed with the Godfather 2. I bought the game expecting the graphics to be sub par so when i played it it was no surprise. However, all the games trailers led me to believe that i would be in complete control and thus be like a Don. The game would let me do this by recruiting people to my family at will and generally let me control them as well as taking over rival bussnisess. But when i started the game it would only let me hire one guy and that was a choice between 2. Im okay with that for the initial tutorial elements but i fully expected to be given full reins to my family shortly in the future but i am 5 hours in and that is still not the case. Still many elements of the game have me hooked and I can hardly stop thinking about how to expand my criminal empire with my puny family. If you can live with sub par graphics, overly long tutorial elements, ridicously easy game play then i strongly urge you to purchase this game.

Aaron t gave it a7:
Well after beating the game i must say i was expecting more but its stil la cool game if u like the mob type games. could have done better with character movement likebeing able to jump any where in the game or jump over things but no cant jump at all. the XBOX live multiplayer COMPLETLY sucks its horrible but the game is worht a play but i wouldnt reccomend paying the bran new price.

Will T. gave it a5:
A major disappointment. The game deserves credit for its strategy system, blackhand combat, and crew specialities, but that's about it. Still, even these strong points, with the exception of blackhand, are watered down and not detailed as they could have been. On the negative side, the writing and story are TERRIBLE, there isn't a whole lot to do other than take over buildings, and the world just graphically looks BAD. I like that they tried to put in an RPG-like dialogue system but there arent enough choices and the dialogue is simply poorly done and cheesy. Also, there isn't even a jump button in the game, which is the simplest of things EA could have done considering every other sandbox game has it. I hated running around ridiculous mazes just to get to a certain point when in Saints Row or GTA, I could have just jumped over a box to get to the other side. Overall, the game doesn't feel like it has anything to do with the Godfather movies... it feels like something separate.
