Hardcore Gamer Magazine
Gyruss never managed to attain the popularity of other shooters of the time such as "Galaga", but it deserved better. [July 2007, p.69]
X360 Magazine UK
Just a superb blaster that will test your reflexes to the limit and make you realise that sometimes ancient arcade games can still be a lot of fun. [Issue#20, p.116]
GameSpot
Gyruss isn't exactly the most famous shooter in the world, but if you remember it--and remember liking it--you'll get enough out of it to justify the $5 purchase price.

The biggest problem with Gyruss is that there's just not a lot too it. Once you've played it for a little bit you've seen it all, and the only motivation to keep playing is to squeeze a few more thousand points out of it to add to your high score.

A rather uninspired XBLA release. Sure, Digital Eclipse put all the bells and whistles on the enhanced version, but when the classic plays better than the enhanced you have to wonder what went wrong.

Gyruss is still a bit of fun to pick up and play once in a while. But only those who have fond memories of the original game – not to mention extreme patience with extreme difficulty – will get any lasting value out of this Live Arcade offering.

Die-hard Gyruss fans with 400 Microsoft Points to spare could do worse to try to recapture their youth, but should note that you will only remember half the game fondly; and for a limited time at that.

It won’t likely suck you back in for repeat plays, like a "Geometry Wars" or even other old-school arcade games like "Joust" - and if you’re getting it for the 200 achievement points, you might be disappointed that you’ll have to really work for some of the milestones.

Another month, another retro space shooter on Xbox Live. This one, however, isn't as much fun as you remember. [July 2007, p.81]
IGN
While it may have done some things that were technically impressive in 1983, game design has come a long way since then and Gyruss simply doesn't hold up. Add in the fact that this port isn't even as good as the original arcade version and you have little reason to give this title more than a passing glance.

A dated and repetitive shooter. [July 2007, p.105]
Video Game Talk
Gyruss is a complete waste of 400 marketplace points. Any feeling of nostalgia is lost in the sluggish shooting control, poor visual design, and average online gameplay.

This game had its day in the sun, in the mid-80s. It's one of those games that should have been left there. Gyruss' tube control and display mechanics do not translate over well to an analog stick and a distant TV display.

Some of the most renowned old games ever have a terrible knack of ageing horribly. Take Gyruss. By virtue of the fact that it was created by Yoshiki 'Street Fighter 2/Final Fight' Okamoto in 1983, it appears to have been granted a disproportionate level of historical interest, despite not actually being anything special in its own right.

Andyman gave it a5:
It's a solid port of the classic arcade shooter and (like all Konami XBLA releases) includes an Enhanced mode. Even so, it's still the same old game you remember. At 400 points, it's a worthy purchase for die-hard fans and for those looking for something different. Everyone else should skip it.
