Strategy Informer
As uninspiring as it is, Heroes Over Europe does deliver adequate multiplayer features that are found in a majority of other similar titles.

Heroes Over Europe--sequel to Heroes Over the Pacific--offers armchair aces yet another reason to climb back into the cockpit, provided you already have a love for the genre. [Sept 2009, p.84]

The fact is, Heroes Over Europe does a lot very right; it just happens to do very few things in total.

Great arcade fun, but the rigid mission structure and the absence of a good save game function can be frustrating when playing lengthy or difficult missions.

Multiplayer modes are limited, though the dogfights and team battles for up to 16 players are still quite fun. It's satisfying taking down an enemy plane when you know there's a human cursing you out from his burning cockpit on the other end.

Heroes over Europe is an entertaining title between action and authenticity.

The humorous dialogue and quirky cut scenes are enough to keep you entertained, but the steep learning curve and frustrating checkpoints will kill the arcade vibe.

Very different from IL-2 Sturmovik: this is an arcade shooter, without any simulation elements. A nice shooter, but nothing else.

In comparison to other flight action titles, Heroes Over Europe just doesn’t measure up.

I can put aside the historical inaccuracies, the tie-fighter-style flight modeling and all the other things that make Heroes Over Europe inferior. And maybe if I hadn’t just played and greatly enjoyed IL-2 Sturmovik, I might be feeling a bit more generous. But unfortunately Heroes Over Europe comes across as not much more than a budget title.

Heroes Over Europe is playable without ever becoming too boring or repetitive, but some defects undermine its gameplay and the challenge level that people desires from this kind of games. If you aren't looking for an overly simulative experience, you could consider at least renting it.

In short, Heroes Over Europe is a mediocre title which adds little to the arcade flight-sim genre.

When on form it's a great arcade flight game. When it isn't, the gameplay can be monotonous. [Dec 2009, p.70]
Game Informer
Strange missteps abound in Heroes Over Europe, but glimmers of fun WWII arcade flight shooting shine through from time to time. [Oct 2009, p.90]
Vandal Online
Heroes over Europe is an enjoyable and entertaining title during the first hours, but in the long run it becomes increasingly repetitive and limited in its gameplay experience.

Not outrageous enough to mark itself out as a must-have arcade WWII flight game. [Dec 2009, p.82]
XGN
Heroes Over Europe has become a decent flight game. But you should consider Il-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, if you’re looking for more serious simulation flight action.

This game has its good points, and while enjoyable in places, unfortunately lacks the appeal and polish to make it a long-term favourite.

If you're looking for a straightforward World War II-themed aerial combat game, Heroes Over Europe is worth a look. While competent, there are better flying titles worth your attention.

If you are a simulation fan, then Heroes Over Europe is definitely not for you. However, if just like to have fun with a decent action game, you will be happily surprised as the use of bullet time and the breathtaking challenges hundreds of meters in height will be almost worth the while.

As an arcade blaster it does a reasonable job, but repetition ensures that even the ridiculous-but-fun Ace Kills get old quickly.
For all it offers in terms of forgiving controls, it lacks in diversity of handling across the available plane models, making the tedium of its mission goals and awkwardness of its special attack features all the more pronounced.

A clear improvement on Heroes Of The Pacific, but IL-2 Sturmovik is still the superior fighter ace.
It's a fun arcade experience, and really easy to pick up and play, but the fact that the mundane objectives will start to bore you after a couple hours makes this one hard to suggest.

If you're a PC gamer that is a bit intimidated by IL-2 Sturmovik and are sick of playing H.A.W.X., then Heroes Over Europe might be worth a look. If you're expecting it to completely fulfill your air combat needs though, you'll be disappointed.

If the thought of realistic flight modeling, amazing graphics and gameplay, and historical fact scare you, then this budget game might be up your alley.

Nothing more than a weekend rental, Heroes Over Europe is a disappointing title when gamers look back and take notice at how well Transmission Games handled their first flight game, Heroes of the Pacific.

Shallow and dull, but it's also inoffensive and marginally enjoyable. [Oct 2009, p.73]

Where Il-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey brings something fresh to the table in a crowded genre of WWII-flying games, in no small thanks to its realism, Heroes over Europe doesn't. Adding the Ace Kill doesn't change anything about the blandness of this title. Heroes over Europe needs a change fast before people stop caring.

The best elements of Heroes Over Europe can only ever be described as 'meh', while the worst will make you want to rip out your own hair. [Issue#51, p.92]
Video Game Talk
Unfortunately, with an unstable online community, it loses the majority of its selling power. Heap on top of that, a thin plot that gives up shortly after takeoff, graphics more haggard than London after a blitz, and some occasionally frustrating controls, and a recommendation can’t be given with a clear conscience.
Some of the latter missions are quite fun and Ace Kill skill adds some interesting variety but it seems unlikely the average player will get that far as they’re inundated with a never ending sea of German fighters, useless comrades and clichéd World War II stories of heroics.
Heroes Over Europe offers some enjoyable arcade dogfighting, but it lacks the depth and excitement needed to keep you coming back for more.
Heroes Over Europe is a stripped down game and will be fairly forgotten with all the great games coming out this fall. Only the die-hard WWII and airplane fans will find this a great game to fly with the Spitfire or the Messerschmitt. The rest of the world will find this game very disappointing and probably won’t be interested. The missions are mostly the same and aren’t very exiting. The Ace Kills can be taken out of the game, and the game is not very pretty.

If Transmission Games had put a little bit more effort into the title and taken it out of WWII and into a world of their own design, they could have been more creative with the story, style, weapons, and gameplay.

With IL-2 asserting impressive air superiority in the last month or so, there's no reason to pick up this ropier and less satisfying interpretation of the same conflict. Technically unimpressive and snooze-inducing, it's less "chocks away" and more "chock this in the bin".

Zipping through the skies over Europe, pounding enemies with hot lead, I realize that this is the fighter pilot game I’ve been waiting for. I’m not a hardcore sim chick, nor am I too impressed with the non sim games that have come out so far. HoE thrills though, and it doesn’t take a full blow fighter pilot to play it. I actually did enjoy the game’s predecessor (Heroes of the Pacific), but it wasn’t quite there. They nailed it this time. Bliss!
Trixy F gave it a10:
Much has been made of the fact that this game and Il-2 have been released so close to each other. Many comparisons are being drawn between the two. I’m nuts over flight games of all kinds, so I got both. Il-2 fans are not lying when they a the game is outstanding on many levels. I wouldn’t pass it p, trust me. It’s a terrific game. But even though it offers both sim style play and arcade style play for the less sim oriented, it really only excels at it’s sim game. As an arcade combat game it’s good, but it’s not great. Heroes over Europe is straight up the best arcade combat game you can buy. For your sim tastes, it’s all about Il-2, but for the best arcade experience of your life3, Heroes over Europe is the clear winner. Me, I love both and would recommend either.
ace m gave it a6:
Lackluster graphics, subpar sound, and a lack of features make this game, the sequel to 2005's Heroes of the Pacific(one of my favorite games of all time) a sequel only Hollywood can be proud of. It looks last gen, suffers from unforgivable slow down when the action heats up, and is sparse in its content, providing 14 campaign missions and 4 modes/maps for MP. The slowdown is almost unbearable, but some other quirks loom inside this rough ride: texture pop up abounds, collision detection is laughable, and the game won't allow you to target certain enemies...... and the friendly AI is worthless to boot. Another weird quirk; the rumble feature is not selectable, and everytime a bullet hits you, or you engage warspeed, the controller vibrates more violently than in any game I have ever played. Result? numb hands and a dead controller battery, certainly NOT a fun or engaging feature. I had my hopes up for this game. It does NOT deliver, other than in the cool 40's menus. Save your money, or at best rent this game. The competition that just released earlier in the month has quite a bit more to offer, both in replay and in quality. This one crashes and burns.
Freddy R gave it a9:
You can’t beat this game for pure adrenaline pumping action. Other games satisfy in their own ways, but for all out action spiced with some sweet visuals this game is IT. There’s nothing like flying through the smoke and debris of the plane you just riddled with bullets, or zeroing in on specific parts of the plane (even the pilot if you’re good enough!) with the cool Ace Kill feature and blasting away. The feeling I get every time I play this game HAS to be dangerous! This much fun just can’t be good for a person.
Carol I gave it a9:
Awesome story, amazing graphics, sizzling action, insane fun and vicious dogfights. Want more? Tons of planes. Easily replayable with 3 different characters to choose from. Exciting locations that look unbelievable. Oh yeah, there’s more still! Truly engaging online combat with more ways to blow your friends out of the sky than you can shake a flight stick at. Come and get some of the best air combat action you can find.
Hermie S gave it a10:
What a nice change of pace! A game that stylizes itself over those World War 2 movies made in the 50’s without being so cheesy as to be ridiculous! This game totally captures the magic of some of the better WWII flight movies. I especially like the parts above the French Alps. The visuals are a knock out, and fighting over the Alps is kind of intense. Try this one out. It’s one of the better flight games to ever grace a console.
