Summary
The game casts players in the role of a Confederate or Union soldier battling through 12 of the most famous battles in U.S. history. Each mission is introduced with a documentary video describing the historic moments in a battle, movements of armies, local fights, historical photos and battle statistics. Gamers experience the intense conflicts of the Civil War in famous locations like Little Round Top and Lookout Mountain to the diverse landscapes of train yards, saw mills and military forts while using bayonets, sabers, the butt of a gun and even their fists to take down the enemy. A wide arsenal of rifles, multiple types of grenades, exploding artillery, revolvers, muskets and more are at the soldier's disposal to set charges, place explosives, sabotage enemy lines, destroy buildings and more to complete mission objectives. A breath of fresh air when every other historical first person shooter is focusing on World War II, but unfortunately the game isn’t interesting enough to warrant a $50 purchase when you pick up the substantially better "Call of Duty 3" for a few dollars more.

While the game could certainly have used some refinement in a number of key areas, at the end of the day I still enjoyed my time with it.

The History Channel Civil War is a nice alternative to other World War II shooters, but you might want to rent it on a rainy weekend. It's a shame because The History Channel footage is really well integrated into the game.

It’s a must play for any Civil War-loving gamers out there, and a decent rental for anyone curious to experience a war game from a war other than World War II for a change.

Smartly though, the game is very easy on the lowest setting, so even the most aim-challenged of casual gamers should be able to get far into it.

We honestly wanted to like this game a lot, but really, it's worth liking only a little. [Feb. 2007, p.76]

While Civil War isn’t going to win over most FPS fans the game does show a huge amount of potential.

After playing through the game, we couldn't help but wonder why Civil War: A Nation Divided wasn't released at a lower price point. The game features subpar graphics, no multiplayer mode, poor AI, and a fairly short single-player campaign.

While the historical battles can feel appropriately fierce at times, A Nation Divided is too short and flawed and with no multiplayer mode there’s not much here shooter fans will enjoy.

History Channel: Civil War is good for a few mindless hours of shooting action, but not much else. History buffs need not apply.

Ultimately, History Channel: Civil War is a game that should be played by most war FPS fans just to experience something different. It may not be the most innovative or exhilarating war FPS, but it is a breath of fresh air from WWII FPS #205.

War has rarely been this uninspiring and run-of-the-mill.

A game based on the American Civil War could get fans excited, and you'd expect more when it carries the History Channel name. A thoroughly disappointing outing.

At best, Civil War is a weekend rental for shooter fans, history buffs, or Achievement miners who aren't knee deep in this fall's blockbuster military games. Be prepared to learn a little and reload a lot - while the buckshot flies all around you.

Sure, you've got some historic weapons and rally cries you won't likely hear in another game. Yet, the shooting isn't fun and the gameplay doesn't do anything to bring the feel of the Civil War to life.

The only person I can recommend this to is a sado-masochist. They will enjoy the torture and unbearing pain that is this game. Please, avoid at all costs.

Enemies are downright dumb and it's pretty hard to tell what's solid and what isn't. Bullets breeze through some things but won't pass through the gap between the spokes of a wagon wheel.

With a lack of multiplayer and a very short game – it’s doubtful you’ll be playing this long. The only replay value is the attempt to try to beat your friends score online and that’s not much of an incentive.

The price tag of $50 seems almost insulting to anyone who buys this game, as it has too many problems to even consider warranting a run-through.

Lakota B. gave it a7:
Its pretty fun but is short and has no multipalyer on it. Pretty good graphics but you die to much from the cannons.
[Anonymous] gave it a7:
Ok game. The getting shot while in cover thing gets really anoying. It is pretty straight forward. Other than the fact that it isn't based in WW2 it is not too much different from The CoD games. but other than that it is on ok game but I don't recomend paying the full price for it
Mike C. gave it a3:
Hard mode shows some serious flaws, such as enemys can shoot you when your behind cover, which can become a real drag, and will make you want to throw you're controller. This is the type of game that would be appreciated if there were nothing to compare it to, but since you have the likes of COD2, Gears Of War and Rainbow Six, this game cannot stand its ground at all compared to other shooters on the console.
[Anonymous] gave it a6:
My expectations were low for this game, I had borrowed it from a friend just to get some the achievement points for it, but it offered a little more. The missions are so linear it's a bit dull at times, and the guns take a while to reload, but that makes it more real I guess, the graphics were better than I would have thought. But this ultimatly this is a pretty fun game, sure it's super short, and you could probably beat it in a day, it's not worth 50$, it's basically what the name suggest, it's a game developed by History buffs" and thats exactly what you get out of it.
Shawn N. gave it a6:
The graphics in civil war are almost alike of the graphics for a PlayStation 2! The guns are awesome and it has a good historical backround..... another thing is when you walk in puddles you dont hear the water sound....it would be better if it were co-op and have more misson's... I would not recommend for sombody to buy this game it is way to easy and the game cost $59.99....if you rent this game you will beat it fast ....that's if your good at shooting game. Overall good gameplay and alright graphics.
Jack W. gave it a10:
I gave it a 10 because the graphics are really good, the sound is awesome and when you bayonet people you just feel plain good.
Neil V. gave it a5:
The graphics and sound are good, and the historical presentation is interesting. Aside from that, there was not a lot to like about this game. It's fairly easy, somewhat tedious and is not polished. A few more months would have done it well. Using cover is next to worthless as you are often shot by enemies you can't see, even when crouched behind a rock. Likewise, in a few spots, the collision detection seems off. You will have an enemy sighted up in your crosshairs (doesn't matter if you are zoomed or not), and they do not respond to being shot. Somewhat disappointed overall, but the game is not horrible.
