Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Jetpac Refuelled takes tried and tested laser-driven arcade gameplay and brings it right up to date, crowbarring in masses of new levels, enemies and weapon upgrades while polishing the visuals and soundtrack to a space-age shine. Veteran twitch gamers and eager rookies are all well catered for, with over 100 stages challenging allcomers to build and refuel their rockets under heavy pressure from disgruntled locals. The ultimate point of all this? Same as it always was: to stay alive and get rich. Online components include access to global high score Leaderboards and a good spread of Achievements, while the inclusion of simultaneous multiplayer action marks another first for the franchise. Two players can quickly and easily set up a head-to-head battle on a single Xbox 360 console or over Xbox Live. So if you fancy giving your trigger finger a proper arcade workout for the first time in ages, this is the game for you. Feel free to storm Xbox Live Arcade and download the Trial version if you're still not sure. Jetpac Refuelled is much more than a simple nostalgia trip, though to show due reverence we've also included a recreation of the classic 1983 original under the heading of Retro mode... we did, however, stop short of making it take five minutes to load. Game Almighty
If you tossed "Geometry Wars," "Lunar Lander" and "Joust" into a digital blender then the result would come pretty close to Jetpac Refueled.

Jetpac Refuelled sports some of the best 2D graphics on XBLA. There’s something about Rare’s art style that really stands out. The colors, backdrops, and character design all blend perfectly together.

Yes, it's basic, yes, it's repetitive, but Jetpac Refuelled looks, sounds and plays great, and is well worth the 400 MS Point price-tag, unlike most ‘classic' titles on the Arcade.

Maybe it’s the explosive beauty and color of it all, it’s really is a visual delight, it’s true eye-candy. Not only that, but it plays great, it’s fun and it’s extremely challenging, but thankfully, even with all the challenge, it’s nice enough to give us a checkpoint feature so we can pick it up and continue the game later on.

If only all 400-point games had this much attention to detail. [Issue #22, p.115]
IGN
A wonderful take on an average classic, the original Jetpac. It's more than updated graphics -- it's a whole new game. It's almost 10 times the game as the original, with a great multiplayer mode (and good old achievement points).

Put simply JetPac is a classic, and JetPac Refuelled is a wonderful testament to the 1983 game.

It’s not an elaborate game, but it does grow on you as you try to progress further through the levels.

This basic game receives some nice updates in its "refuelled" mode, but it's still best suited for those who hold some shred of nostalgia for the original game.

Achievement Point junkies beware; you are likely to break a controller before breaking the 200-point mark on Jetpac.

A cheap, but rather lovely remake of the simple shooter that kicked off Rare's legacy. It's a wonderfully playable link to UK gaming's past, and well worth the 400 points Microsoft's charging for it, but way too repetitive to keep you amused for long.

But underneath the pretty graphics JetPac Refuelled is pretty much the same game we played a quarter of a century ago. We doubt it'll grip a new generation of gamers as much as it did back in the day but you'll get your money's worth.

Easily the weakest Live Arcade game to come out in the past two months, but that's not to say it's bad. At such a cheap price, it's actually a pretty nice package.

As instantly addictive as it was 20 years ago. Updated graphics and gameplay are top notch, but the difficulty and repetitiveness are a bit much after a while. [Issue 25, p.70]
VideoGamer
This remake has been handled with an unusual level of respect and a commitment to the original, and the graphical overhaul strikes a happy balance between old and new.

Even with Kraftwerk-esque electronic tunes and adequate multiplayer, it feels too much like a mediocre Flash game--making it tough to justify dropping five bucks on the experience. [May 2007, p.77]
Official Xbox Magazine UK
Jetpac Refuelled has a lot of charm, and the inclusion of the Spectrum original is a nice bit of nostalgia, but the game lacks the depth and intelligence of other arcade games from that era.

Andyman gave it a5:
It's quite ironic that this game trumpets the achievements of Chris and Tim Stamper, considering that both of these men (the founders of Rare) are no longer with Rare... and it shows. Sure, the visuals look nice, but the gameplay is very tired and the camera has a mind of its own. It must have taken some serious effort to screw up the camera in a 2D game. At $5, the price is right... but you'll be better off putting that $5 toward the Shivering Isles expansion. On a scale from 'ouch!' to 'wow!', I give it a 'meh'.
Conor W. gave it a7:
If it weren't fr the constantly shifting zoom of the gameplay window this would be a must have for many XBLA fans. It is still quite fun, but the view shift near to far in refueled mode making later levels very frustrating since the enemies move faster than your POV range.
