Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Place your customized Xbox LIVE Avatar in the medieval world of A Kingdom for Keflings, a new city-building game from NinjaBee. Play as your Avatar or choose from other friendly giants as you teach the local Keflings how to collect and convert resources to customize your kingdom. Educate and train your Keflings to become workers, scholars, even Mayor of the city! Build your kingdom alone or cooperatively with up to three of your friends online. The more you build, the more buildings you unlock and the more Keflings you attract, so start building today! City-building fun: In an original approach to a well-loved genre, A Kingdom for Keflings features a large avatar interacting with the Keflings, resources, and buildings of a small village. Resources and Keflings can be converted from one type to another. Buildings can be built and upgraded with a combination of specific resources and specific Kefling types. Buildings in turn make new resources and Kefling types available, unlock new building types, attract more Keflings, and achieve other game goals. It's the first game of its kind on Xbox LIVE Arcade to support full in-game playable avatars. Move your avatar around, pick up the Keflings and pop them into buildings. Customization: Make your city your own by customizing the look and color of buildings, and decorating the village with additional elements such as trees and walkways. The time of the season: Stylized animated graphics change with the seasons, and a dynamic music soundtrack (which adapts to the season and the state of the village) gives the game an unusually strong sense of life and activity. Co-op play: Build cities online cooperatively with your friends. [Microsoft]

Official Xbox Magazine
The do-what-you-like pacing, charming presentation, and endlessly addictive nature of tackling increasingly complex structures in an effort to ultimately erect an impressive castle, mirrors an addiction we haven't experienced since the last time we preened in our pretty pinata gardens. [Dec 2008, p.88]

If you’re into strategy games, you might find A Kingdom for Keflings a bit light on your abilities. Just the same, even the best strategist could enjoy a fun workout like this, which is often more like a Rube Goldberg machine that needs constantly changing parts to be integrated in for it to work correctly.

A great game where many hours can easily pass by without you noticing.

A Kingdom for Keflings might seem a little repetitive and pointless, and it is on some basic level, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun.

Above all else, the gaming experience in A Kingdom for Keflings is very unique. There have been only a handful of titles that have made a leisurely activity fun, and this is definitely one of them.

If you're looking for a laid back alternative to the typical XBLA fare, A Kingdom for Keflings is for you. It's a humorous, low-pressure/high reward strategy game that gives your brand new Xbox avatar something fun to do.

The package here is definitely worth the $10 and those that are looking for a relaxing game to utilize their new Avatar will find a lot to like here.

This is more of an open, sandbox game with no consequences for doing things your way. Regardless of the length of time you play each session, you’ll find yourself pulled back to the game as soon as you switch to something else. This is one little XBLA game that is definitely worth 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Although it has its performance issues and presentation quirks, Keflings rises above both to achieve a Zen-like quality of pleasant addiction.

Such innocence with a secret mean streak pleases us immensely, and even if you play fair there must be many hours of gameplay trying to see your little guys into a fortified castle. [Issue#37, p.117]

A Kingdom for Keflings provides a light but unique strategy experience that is pretty much one of a kind on XBLA.

With its walk-in-the-park approach to gameplay, Keflings will launch a sneaky assault on your time, and before you know it you will easily have whiled away hours with the title. Where it may miss, however, is whether or not you will be keen to pick it back up and see it to its meandering conclusion.

If you are a fan of strategy or construction-style games you owe it to yourself to check this one out, as the addictive and fun gameplay will most certainly keep you coming back for more!

It's definitely not a game for everyone, but it's one of the more unique experiences on the Arcade if you're willing to just let go of the rules and regulations and build for the sake of building!

A Kingdom for Keflings is an interesting city-building-strategy game combined with avatar-support. If you enjoy games like Die Siedler or Doshin the Giant you will be tied up to ten hours: very fair for 800 MS-points.

Keflings' charm and habit-forming rhythm make it worth the price. Just don't expect it to hold your interest beyond the first playthrough.

Although it needs a few tweaks here and there (like a way to quickly reorganize when every Kefling is employed, or some kind of shortcut when transferring goods from one shop to another) it was great to be able to sit back and relax with something without fear of being picked off by snipers or a constant need to manage my supply of health packs.

It's really not a great videogame. But it's certainly a good waste of time.

It took me around ten hours to complete, and while I was never on the edge of my seat, I was charmed for most of that time, sticking with it until I'd picked up the last gamerpoints. If your gaming palate favours such gentle fare, A Kingdom for Keflings is a lovely way to spend the day.

Short-lived settlement building with soothing gameplay and music. [Nov 2008, p.84]

Despite the dull design and terrible frame rate, I found myself playing KFK for five hours straight. The entire game I personally had a feeling offelt “This isn’t very fun, I wish I wasn’t playing this” but continued to do so anyway.

At first, the game seems like a good time. After a few hours, you'll realize that you are essentially doing the same consequence-free things over and over.

Its lethargic pace could put many off, but the mix of strategy and resource management is hard to fault. [Feb 2009, p.104]

Laseaul M gave it a3:
This game is not for you if you are expecting a decent RTS style game. As some of the main critics have said, no consequences makes this a sandbox game to waste time in. It's missing the one main ingredient for an average rts.... warfare; without it, its selling out to casual sim city-ites who don't want the chance of their population hating them. The music, collision, terrain, frame rate, are all a waste. Your money can be better spent renting a couple movies. What was nice, was they incorporated avatars pretty much at the same time the update was released it seems.
Bob P gave it a10:
Amazing little game. I didn't think much of it when I read about it or even after I started it up. But after playing for a few hours, and then a few more hours, and then omg it's 3am. This game is astonishingly addicitve, with nice chevos, too. Great arcade game that has that magical "just one more turn" quality that I miss from my PC gaming days. Highly recommended for a relaxing bit of fun.
Sid F gave it a9:
This is game is just fun and relaxing. There's no combat or consequences, yet amazingly it manages to hold your attention for hours at a time. It does what it does very well.
Sabrina T gave it a10:
Amazing game! It's not just for kids. I'm almost 23 yrs old and I enjoy it - both playing and watching my husband, helping to determine the best strategy and placement of buildings. Absolutely worth more than its $10 price tag.
Andrew B gave it a9:
A Kingdom for Keflings is a charming addiction and a great addition to the XBLA library. With the resource management of an RTS and the kingdom building enjoyment of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, A Kingdom For Keflings is a very enjoyable game and a recommended download for any Xbox Live user.
John F. gave it an8:
A fun little game. It's not a whole lot more than the building/gathering portion of an RTS, but there is a good amount of stuff to manage. It is a very laid-back and relaxing game. Chances are you might not play it more than a week or two, but it's only $10, and there's enough here to get your money's worth.
