Summary

[Xbox Live Arcade] Take a ride through an intergalactic journey where you slide, stack, and ignite your blocks to blast away the world-ending Meteos. Only you can stop them from falling and crushing your planet! Master combo links and power-ups to challenge your friends in intense multiplayer sessions. Planets galore: Defend over 20 planets, each with its own alien race, Meteos blocks, unique gravity effects, and visual and audio style. Special techniques: Master four of the "Planet Impact" special attacks -- Armageddon, Gambit, Sentinel, and Tempest. Massive modes: Test your action-puzzle skills in a variety of single-player modes, including Mission Mode, Attack Mode, or Vs. Mode. Three challenges await you in Attack Mode -- the One-Minute attack, 100-Meteo attack, and the Challenge attack. Multiplayer action: Blast away your opponents over Xbox LIVE in Matchmaking Vs. Mode and become one of the best Meteos Wars players in the community. You can also go head-to-head with your friend in Local Vs. Mode. New accessories: Collect various accessories for your aliens by clearing certain objectives. Accessorize your alien and give it some personality. [Q Entertainment]

Meteos Wars is definitely a lean package, putting in just the bare essentials, and while it might lack the visual zest of some of Q Entertainment’s better-known titles, the gameplay, which hits the right balance between approachability and replayability, more than makes up the difference.

Team Xbox

The blocks are appropriately vibrant, the launching effect is cool, the backgrounds sci-fi-ish, and the momentum-driving music never grows too repetitive—a significant achievement for a puzzle game.

Meteos Wars is an excellent addition to the XBLA family and a delightful treat for fans of Q Entertainment in general. While it does suffer from transition issues to a traditional control scheme you can easily adjust to it after less than an hour.

We can safely say that Meteos Wars isn't as good as its dual screen brother, but don't take that to mean you should cast the thought of forking out your hard-earned MS Points aside.

From the looks of things the formula is still going strong and is in no real danger of becoming stale any time in the near future. [Feb 2009, p.113]

Official Xbox Magazine

With all that content to complement its addictiveness, Meteos Wars shouldn't be missed by those who crave block puzzles. [Holiday 2008, p.69]

IGN

It looks snazzy and sounds great. It's just too bad the online multiplayer didn't perform better in my experience.

Cheat Code Central

The title retains most of what made it a success, and additions like Planet Impact are a nice touch. On the other hand, the online multiplayer is a bit of a letdown, so in the end, whether Meteos Wars is worth your hard-earned $10 depends on how much you need a new puzzle game.

Meteos Wars may not be ideal with a standard controller, but it is still a fun, hectic and different take on the traditional block clearer.

Destructoid

Meteos Wars is a fast puzzle game that has a refreshing presentation and good gameplay execution, but it lacks substance.

Eurogamer

For Xbox Live Arcade it's not quite the return to last summer's form, and there are more substantial falling-blocks puzzle games with comparable production values elsewhere on the service (Lumines Live, for instance), but if you can look past its slender framework and online issues then Meteos Wars is a decent death blow to a few otherwise productive evenings, and more proof from Q that there's life in the old blocks yet.

Online play is a huge disappointment, but the frenetic action of the Meteos series has survived the journey to the Xbox Live Arcade intact.

Worth Playing

The lesson here is that if you own a DS, you're far better off buying the original than you are settling for this new port that comes in high on style but low on substance.

Gameplanet

A cool concept for a puzzle-block game that is unfortunately hampered by an overly aggressive AI and a real lack of multiplayer opponents on XBL. If you can get a friend or two together though, you'll have a blast.

The main reason I would buy Meteos Wars is if a mate or two already own it.

Xbox World 360 Magazine UK

A great bit of old-fashioned block busting fun marred slightly by the sluggish controls. [Mar 2009, p.94]

Giant Bomb

While the mission mode and various attack modes can certainly keep you occupied for a time, Meteos' real legs come from human competition. Unless you're planning on playing with friends and don't care about random encounters in ranked matches, Meteos Wars is pretty tough to recommend.

Put simply, it works exactly how you'd expect a tech demo for touch screen to work when the touch screen's taken away. [Issue#39]

Gaming Age

While the music and visuals are still up to the standards of Q Entertainment, the game has undergone a severe downgrade with the new control scheme.
