The effort put into the depth of control of this game is very apparent. Each of the four modes of racing controls in subtly different ways, and racing aficionados will definitely be able to tell the difference.

We kid you not, ProStreet is arguably the best driving game yet...A game of extraordinary brilliance.[Issue 26, p.82]
GamePro
The outstanding online gameplay is just one item on a long list of reasons to play ProStreet. The great visuals, solid racing mechanics, lengthy career mode and customization options help make this one of the most deep and enjoyable racing titles around.

Need for Speed: ProStreet is a great breath of fresh air for the series, and is a very complex and deep racer with some sleek customization options.
Truly innovative in the areas of user interface, art direction, online integration and vehicle damage, Need for Speed ProStreet is the most complete hardcore tuner-style game ever conceived, and is only a framerate fix away from being the best street racer ever for the Xbox 360.

While Project Gotham Racing and Forza Motorsport improved upon their winning formulas in their respective sequels this year, EA completely overhauled the Need for Speed franchise to create what is arguably the best game in the series.

It feels more sophisticated, looks great, delivers tons of cars and racing disciplines, and upgrades what was already a solid online component. But far more critical, it's one of the best drives on the 360.

There are still chills and thrills to be found in ProStreet’s more organized “underground” racing series, though, as the racing action still very much fills the need for speed for racing gamers.

When it comes down to it, Need for Speed Pro Street is a racing game that’s focus is entirely on one thing: racing. There are no cute little stories or “other” things to do.

The handling and physics, damage accumulation, and detail are all highly polished and the car models beam with next-gen wax-on. [Dec 2007, p.86]
Official Xbox Magazine
ProStreet might feel a bit thin without the open world and impulsive attitude of "Most Wanted", but it's still and exciting distillation that adeptly mixes arcade pleasure with realism for an absorbing day at the races. [Holiday 2007, p.72]

While I too had a good time out on the tracks, ProStreet's bog-standard (but still superb-feeling) racing does little to evolve the series. [Holiday 2007, p.68]
Games Master UK
Not as thrilling as previous titles, but it's a brave new direction. [Christmas 2007, p.70]
Gaming Age
Pro Street provides tons of race variations such as grip class, time attack, sector shootout, drift races, ¼ mile drag, ½ mile drag, wheelie competition, top speed runs, and speed challenges. The career mode does a nice job mixing up these race variations to help the game from growing stale too quickly.

We welcome with open arms the change of attitude and approach of this new Need for Speed. But we frown upon some of the problems that were left unsolved, like the structure of the career mode but mainly on the handling of the cars. But for those who turned their backs on the previous games, it’s a good place to return to this franchise. [Dec 2007]
Worth Playing
It's certainly a great half of a game; the somewhat limited gameplay aspects, pretty lights and revving engine sounds are good enough to make the title entertaining and fun, but they're not enough to comprise a convincing whole game.

With the amount of in game advertising that is all over the place, EA probably don’t need to sell many copies to make enough money to guarantee the next instalment in the franchise. We just hope they make more of that opportunity to evolve the series than they did with this somewhat lacklustre effort.

Cars and physics shine in this game, but the gameplay gets repetitive in an overlong career mode.

The decision to move away from what has made the series so great and toward the simulation style is a questionable one. Fans of the series will be upset with the omission of the cop chases, illegal racing, and overall shady mood.

The bold change of direction is to be applauded, but everything feels too bitty. [Jan 2008, p.70]
GamerNode
Is ProStreet a change from the NFS formula? Yes. Is it a welcome change? Not really. The removal of the NFS staples and little new additions make this a rather generic racer.

Electronic Arts has found a great balance between speed and technical understanding. The game’s tuning system is exhaustive, and given that the only way to acquire new cars is to win them, understanding the modifications and their effects offers greater rewards that ever before. [Chrismas 2007, p.118]
Game Informer
The one undoubtedly cool thing that ProStreet brings to the table is its online play (except on Wii), where you can create your own race days and invite friends to compete them. The race day will keep a persistent leaderboard of everyone’s progress, so you can always go back and knock off your buddy.

ProStreet is a solid racing game, but it's missing most of what made the previous games in the series interesting.
Overall if you prefer your racers arcade style rather then simulations you might well get along much better with Need For Speed Pro Street, and once you forgive the odd behaviour of the car handling you can get along with the game fairly well.

A disappointing effort in a franchise that has generally been rather solid. It sort of feels like EA is starting over again, leaving the open-world aspects to other games like its own "Burnout Paradise," but is seems like Black Box didn't know what to do with what was left.

Need for Speed has gone legit, and in doing so has lost most of its excitement.
ProStreet isn't a fundamentally bad game, it's just very different to what Need for Speed fans are used to. If you stick with the game there is still plenty of enjoyment to be had, but the game just isn't as fun as previous Need for Speed titles.

The end result is that car enthusiasts will enjoy the customisation options and traditional driving methods but other fans of the series will be frustrated at the missing action from previous games.

ProStreet may not be a comfortable mix of two racing genres, but it certainly is an interesting curiosity.

ProStreet takes the series to an ambiguous halfway point between Forza and Need for Speed. [Christmas 2007, p.76]
Xboxic
The overall feeling of the game is that it doesn’t really excel at anything, but neither does it do too many things wrong to give it a bad grade.
Sure, it moves fast, and the online options deliver a sweet community aspect, but the 1/4-mile drag events suck, the game at times looks jaggier than a shark's mouth and the drab presentation denies it much needed personality. It's a decent racer, but not sexy enough to rev our engines.

The realistic physics and driving model works very well, but the setting and structure of the racing events ultimately brings it down.

The meetings themselves are well realised, with the developer putting considerable effort into evoking the right kind of atmosphere. [Christmas 2007, p.99]
VideoGamer
ProStreet isn't a bad game, it simply doesn't hold a candle to its competition, and Need for Speed fans will be left wondering where all the fun has gone from the illegal, turned legal, street racing series.

Honestly, we still prefer Most Wanted to ProStreet even though ProStreet offers significantly improved tire smoke that actually wraps around the wheel wells of your car, because Most Wanted had cops that chased us and provided a really compelling reason to drive as fast as humanly possible.

There’s a lot of content on offer, and if you can get past its saccharine veneer, ProStreet could keep you busy for a long time.

Need For Speed: ProStreet feels like Forza 2's mindless clone, a la Doug #4 in Multiplicity. It is a bland, lifeless game requires a massive amount of tedium to get through.
A disappointment when you look at it against the last two games in the series. The elimination of an open world environment and police chases takes any adrenaline rush that was in the last couple games and puts you in decidedly static game mechanics.

NFS Prostreet is a highly polished title, but completely absent of entertainment value.
It's tolerable enough and will certainly last you a long time, but it seems a shame that what used to be one of EA's better, more reserved racing games has become quite so loud, desperate and mediocre in an attempt to distinguish itself, and that what it does get right in this year's iteration is almost completely divorced from the track where so many of its contemporaries excel.

Jens L. gave it a9:
Nice Game , extended multiplayer but hard to invite your own friends.
Sergio T. gave it a1:
How dare you??? Go legal??? Terrible game, ruin the entire series.
Adam K. gave it a4:
How on earth can anyone like this drastic change. NFS was one of a kind with blur vision, police chases and a great fast paced arcade feel. I really think EA in general this year has been shocking, apart from skate which I have not seen, I really think they have gone backwards. The action is slow, and repetitive, the visuals and the modifications give it a 4 out of 10. I have played about 3 hours of this and that is where it will stay. They are trying to copy Forza, PGR, but too little too late. What a waste of money.
Kurdt F. gave it a0:
This game is terrible. If it was just crap graphics (forza 2) it could be forgiven. If it were just the poor framerate, I guess I could overlook it - if the gameplay was any good. But it's not. It's a dull racer that *might* have looked good on the xbox, but that looks really sad here on the 360. I think that NFS is suffering an identity crisis: it isn't an arcade racer, and it surely isn't a sim. The environments are jaggy and terrible looking... I am sorry, I have nothing positive to say about this title. I wish I did, as I just forked over $60 to EA. It's just a forgettable title amongst giants. Buy PGR4 and hope for something better to come along. One more thing: don't buy it unless you are on live. Many cars cannot be purchased unless you have MS points. And I wiish I was on live, b/c then I might have had a chance to demo this piece of garbage.
Kasha B. gave it a10:
These reviewers are out to lunch! NFS has redefined the racing game. PGR, Forza, GT - these are sterile by-the-numbers racers. ProStreet is trying something different - smoke, announcers, rivals, that's what it's all about.
Ben J. gave it a9:
It's like I'm not even playing the same game as most of the reviewers. ProStreet is NFS all grown up. The racing and physics modeling is more sophisticated, the user modifications are more meaningful, and the online componant is profound. The over-the-top announcers and the slightly sluggish feel of the early low powered cars are the only blemishes I notice in this game. This is the NFS game I've been waiting for since my first love, NFS:HS
Judge J. gave it a10:
Best NFS game to date! Visuals blow me away, sound and presentation rocks, and career mode is a challenge! Im in 110%!
