Summary
PES 6 once again features the graphical and gameplay tweaks that enable each new title to play completely differently from previous incarnations. The shooting system has been the subject of extensive retouching, now enabling players to pull off much more accurate snap shots as well as being able to exert a much larger feeling of control when going for quick half volleys or difficult full volleys. The intelligence of players has seen a marked improvement. For example, players now make more realistic runs into space, often pointing where they would like the ball played. The physical aspect has also been beefed up, with strikers using their sheer presence to turn defenders and likewise, the defenders stepping a yard away to enable them to force players away from goal and not letting them spin into dangerous positions. PES 6 also has a number of new teams licensed for inclusion, with the International roster now featuring the official kits for Argentina, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Sweden. New gameplay modes have been added and features like the much loved Master League mode also returns, together with a host of new tricks, feints and animations that can be used to bamboozle your opposition. Times Online
In PES6 you can make a sliding tackle and come up with the ball, and the AI has been greatly improved. The passing and shooting have been made harder to master and the players’ movement off the ball is better.

Pro Evolution Soccer can once again chant “We are top of the league” thanks to yet another dazzling performance.

Owners of an Xbox 360 have a right to feel a little miffed that their version isn't identical to the PS2 but Pro Evo 6 is still top of the table.

Looks a little better than the previous incarnations but is mostly quite familiar. The lacking editing possibilities of the 360 version are a disappointment, but the game itself is still as fun as ever. [Dec 2006]
Xbox World Australia
One of the finest soccer games I have played. Everything when playing a match feels fantastic. Scoring goals takes hard work, and when you do you feel as though you really have earned it.

Konami's seminal football game finally makes its way to the Xbox 360, but it doesn't fulfil many next-generation ambitions.

It looks the same, plays the same, feels the same and, praise the lord, actually is the same. Maybe a bit too 'the same' if you've played it every year for the last five years, but still. It'll do.

Although the game's presentation is markedly improved, it seems as though we'll have to wait until Pro Evolution Soccer 7 marks its appearance on the PlayStation3 before we really see what Seabass can muster with the next-generation.

Given the sports simulations that have decorated 360 so far, there’s an inescapable sense of yearning for what could have been. An evolution is no longer enough. [Dec 2006, p.110]
Boomtown
If all you want to do is play football with friends then PES will still provide you with everything you need. Just don’t go expecting miracles as it is still very much another evolution in the series, we might have to wait until next year for the revolution.

What we have is solid, and refinements could propel it back to glory, but really it's high time we started over from scratch...It's hard not to think that the series has taken a noticeable step backwards at a time when EA's busy taking giant steps with "FIFA."

While EA’s effort is admirable and the improvement is notable, PES6 just has an undeniable superiority in its depth in gameplay, which will always beat graphical dominance.

Gripes about PES prove a modern-day "Princess and the Pea" story. The general excellence of the game's simulation serves to unduly highlight one measly kilobite of pure devil's armpit. [Issue 13, p.96]

A very high standard game but considering the series' lofty expectations it just doesn't go far enough to keep us happy.

It may have been the prospect of high-definition Pro Evo that created the most buzz amongst fans, but it's the superior PS2 version that comes out smelling of roses.

If you really want to play online though, or the game modes are important to you, the PlayStation 2 game is by far the better choice. This year Konami can just about be forgiven for short-changing Xbox 360 owners, but next year's game better be next-gen.

They need to elevate PES to the next stage of its life that it so deserves, and the only way they can do that is to give players more of what they want rather than take from them.
Read Full Review >360 Gamer Magazine UK
Although the tweaks and alterations since the last version are only minor, Pro Evolution Soccer is still a decent footie game. But this year the gap between "FIFA" and PES has grown ever tighter. The overall experience of "FIFA" is certainly better but PES still has the hardcore gameplay.

What makes all this a shame is that underneath a layer of awfulness the classic Pro Evolution Soccer gameplay is there fighting to get out. But a broken mess of an online mode, unnecessary alterations and an absent edit mode make this hardly the next generation football classic we were expecting.

There’s just far too much disappointment in PES6 to make it fun; I’m not talking about hype or other people's opinions here, I’m talking about a company too lazy to address the problems that have plagued the series pretty much since the start.

Steven T. gave it a9:
I think this game is about as good as it can be given the limits caused by licensing. The gameplay and matchplay have all improved but it is hard to ignore the lack of edit modes and save replay functions. These issues are all that stop this game from being a 10 in my opinion and (on the pitch at least) it will be hard to make pes 7 much better.
Carl T. gave it a5:
First up Mr. Seabass what a let down! Now I'm a big pro evo fan but what I always thought about pro evo was this; it was never perfect but you allways had the feeling that one day it would be. This I thought was it ....... no.6........But no, it just hasnt come together? in fact it feels like the series is going backwards. the sheer power of the computer players, the BLINDNESS of the ref! and no editing ??? what ? I couldn't believeit? Sort it out Seabass......please.
Ade S. gave it a5:
As said above really, I love pro evo and have played number 5 to death on xbox live, but this just doesn't cut it. Passing has been ruined, it isn't harder, it just doesn't work. The players seem slow and unresponsive as is the speed of the ball, it actually at times feels like you are playing footy on the moon. I keep putting the game on, playing it and trying to make it work, hope that something will click and it will become playable, but alas its not happening, I just want to play pro evo 5 again. Poor.
Chris S. gave it a7:
OK so no editing and no saving replays. But it looks better than 5 and to me the play does not seem that different. The patch has improved online.
Matt W. gave it a6:
I'm afraid this game just got worse. It's not say it's not any good, because it is, it's just Pro Evo 5 was and is so much better. To say that the passing is harder seems an excuse: It's just broken (from the previous version). The AI seems to have been broken also (again comparing to PES5). I can't stress enough just how frustrating this title is to play if you've mastered PES5. I've spent years and years growing up with PES and I'm huge huge fan of the franchise, but my experince with PES6 on the 360 is leaving me a bitter taste in my mouth; everytime I play it! I expected something better, as I've been given in each rendition in the past, but this is by far the tamest and lamet effort Konami have made so far. If you like the Pro Evo franchase, don't kid yourself and pretend this is better than the previous titles - just because it's new. Just go back to PES5 and write this one off as a bad apple.
Rich H. gave it a3:
appalling. cut down version of PES that feels like PES1 or 2. slow, unresponsive and lacking all the refinements of the PS2 version. Online is ruined by disconnects. Konami, next time wait until the game is finished before you release it.
