Summary

[Xbox Live Arcade] Control a spaceship that must infiltrate the enemy Scramble system in a classic side-scrolling shooter. Shoot fuel canisters to replenish your reserves in order to make it to the enemy base at the end of the system. [Konami]

GameSpot

Scramble on the 360 is a faithful rendition of the original arcade game. If that alone doesn't get you excited, you should probably take a pass.

All problems with the multiplayer aside, this game is lots of fun, especially if you’ve never played it before. The achievements are a bit easy, and lack of used screen space will wear on the nerves of any HD user.

Eurogamer

It's really not that engaging a game in 2006 once you've got over the initial reaquaintence, and certainly not deserving of a standalone release on Live Arcade when there are so many more worthwhile games to download.

GameDaily

A serviceable shooter that arcade fans should moderately enjoy. But if all you have are a certain amount of points to spend in the XBLA field, I suggest going with "Time Pilot" first. This game's fuel seems to run out quicker than it lets on.

While Scramble is a fun for quick run throughs, it doesn't have the staying power of many of the other classics on Arcade.

It's just boring. [Issue 12, p.116]

Game Chronicles

The sixty minutes it takes to finish the five short levels isn’t worth the investment.

If you like twitchy old-style gameplay, Konami's Time Pilot port is a much better use of your 400 Microsoft Points($5). [Dec. 2006, p.76]

IGN

Better shooters are available for free on the web or for a small fee through Live Arcade. If you loved Scramble in 1981, then there might be something here worth looking at. Otherwise, you'd be much better off sticking with "Galaga" or "Geometry Wars."

Games Radar (in-house)

While games like "Time Pilot" aged gracefully, this side-scrolling space shooter feels old and inflexible, a crusty gaming battleship dragged out of drydock. All you can do is stare and go, "Wow, that's old."

The Live Arcade shoud be the home of great new franchises not tired old games like this. [Issue #16, p.73]

GameShark

Control isn’t that tight – in fact it seems very loose. Collision detection isn’t perfect as it seems that if you just breathe near a mountain you’ll crash into it.

Pointless - for the two minutes you'll bother. [Nov 2006, p.107]

Slarti B. gave it a10:
Great game! Love the classics, hope they keep coming.

Hugh J. gave it a10:
If you're over 30 and remember video arcades, this is a welcome throwback to those days. The graphical and sound updates are nicely done and do not detract from the classic gameplay. Achievements and online leaderboards make the game well worth the modest asking price. Bashers of classic games or people who say "why play oldies on a modern system?" should keep their low scores to themselves -- this kind of game just isn't for them, and they should stick to the conventional packages in shrinkwrap on DVD.

Andyman gave it a1:
Scramble was crap in 1981, and 25 years have only enhanced its stench. Oddly enough, the game spawned several clones back then, although I have no clue why. Its gameplay is extremely weak and incredibly frustrating, and the game has exactly no replay value. Sure, Konami has added small updates like they've done with Frogger and Time Pilot, but there's no cleaning up this pile of trash. Grab the Trial version if you're curious, but I guarantee you won't be buying this one.
