Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Take the plunge in Screwjumper! Freefall into the depths of the chaotic underworld as a Screwjumper, and drive the aliens back to their home world by destroying their precious mining equipment. Demolish structures in freefall as you increase your destructive power by increasing your velocity. Use dynamite to pick off hazards and high value targets. Destroy the mine core and jetpack out alive. Dead screwjumpers don't get paid. Multiple levels and characters: Descend and destroy 20 mines on four different planets with six different characters, including Skruii the foreman of the Screwjumpers Union, Filch the reckless thrill-seeker, Zyree the unpredictable, Xoona the aloof, Ula the mad, and Zomar the mysterious. Ultimate destruction: Chain your destruction by plunging through objects at ultra-terminal speeds. You're a screwjumper. Go for it. Single player modes: Risk your neck in four single-player modes including Destruction, Race, Time Trial, and Score. Multiplayer: Compete with your friends via split screen and Xbox LIVE multiplayer. With better tuning, this could be a much more fun game. As it is, we'd strongly advise you to check out the game's finicky controls for yourself in the demo before you commit. [Jan 2008, p.66]

While most will likely balk at the idea of spending 800 Microsoft Space Bucks for this title I find it quite refreshing and reminiscent of the PSOne days where devs took chances on titles that didn’t really fit a genre.

The free-falling dynamic feels fresh and acts as the element that sets the title apart from the rest of the pack, but due to the poor execution of the intriguing gameplay formula and downsides, like too little “bang for the buck”, Screwjumper! falls flat on its face.

We love the fact that Frozen Codebase stepped outside the box and jumped into the mine, but Screwjumper!’s recurring in-game issues leave us no other choice but to give it the shaft.

There’s been a ton of great games released for 800 points on the service, I can tell you that Screwjumper is not one of them. While I can appreciate the developers tried to do something different, in this case different does not always mean better.

Charging 800 points for this when the aforementioned Castlevania: SotN comes at the same price is taking the proverbial. Steer well clear of this one.

Screwjumper! just should not have been green lit by Microsoft. There’s nothing redeeming about Screwjumper!, no reason for anyone to give it a second look, and absolutely no way you should spend ten bucks for the download.

The weirdest, floatiest controls imaginable. [Feb 2008, p.94]
360 Gamer Magazine UK
There’s just no way to justify spending seven-odd quid on something that wouldn’t be out of place on a mobile phone and that’s exactly what this is – a decrepit and distinctly dull few seconds of gameplay repeated ad infinitum, failing entirely to cash in on what is a potentially brilliant concept. Keep your points in your pocket for now.
Games Radar (in-house)
Screwjumper is another one of those Live Arcade games that feels more like it should be a bonus mission in a more fully-realized title. And not a very good bonus mission, at that.

Erik P. gave it a10:
Great kids game... Should be in an arcade!
XBL: graphitti gave it a2:
Thank goodness for demos on XBL arcade. For the price, there are far better games out there. This one has tepid and boring graphics and very poor controls.
Mike S. gave it a1:
It's a fundamental design flaw when, after describing how to play the game, players trying to feel the controls find themselves headbutting an electirifed wall for half of the first stage.
Andyman gave it a0:
I was thinking that Screwjumper! would be like H.E.R.O., but instead it's just plain ZERO. Avoid this abysmal game at all costs.
George F. gave it an8:
I enjoyed Screwjumper! - I found it fun and challenging enough to hold my attention...in fact I'm going back for more.
