Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Shred Nebula combines the best elements of arcade space-shooter action with free-roaming exploration and multiplayer excitement. Pilot the experimental R.I.P. Rocket through the galaxy in search of the Lost Expeditions ... no ship has ever returned from the vastness of interstellar space. This top-down, fast-paced ship-combat game features three loaded modes of play—Adventure, Score Attack, and Multiplayer. Play co-op with your friends, or go head-to-head in a deathmatch dogfight. No one knows what lies in the center of the galaxy. Will you be the first to discover the secrets of the gravitational region known as The Shred and make it home alive? [Microsoft]

Stick to the four or better multiplayer mayhem, and you’ll find Shred Nebula offers you more than enough bang for your ten space bucks.

The visuals are nice, but the environment can be hard to discern. The story is fairly interesting, but it's told in a completely non-engaging way. The combat is fun, but it's also highly repetitive, and the same strategies work on almost all enemy types without fail.

It features some classic nostalgia from the 80’s, a fair amount of strategy mixed with skill and is pretty addictive – especially in online multiplayer where you can have four player dogfight mayhem.

Shred Nebula has the right idea: Take top-down shooter action, spice it up a little, and create stages for people who prefer identifiable goals to random point-chasing.

You’ll need to forget everything you know about accelerating/moving with the left stick and blasting away with the right – Shred Nebula is more technical than Geometry Wars, but nowhere near as addictive.

If you're looking for something different in the already varied arcade segment try Shred Nebula. Be prepared for long loading times and a somewhat boring soundtrack, but beyond that you've got a game that offers nice physics and more than enough cannon fodder.

Both the unwieldy control scheme and the bafflingly forgiving nature of the game count against it, which is a shame because for the most part it's a thoroughly satisfying and meaty shooter, blessed with some stunning backdrops and a blistering frame-rate.

Shred Nebula can be a near mindless experience at times but it is completely functional, and while it fails to be very exciting it often presents the same moments of enjoyment found in a quick game of Asteroids.

It's damn near a flight sim, with tons of controls and HUD elements (a bar for your health and your shields, and a bar for the charging time for your special weapon -- which is more special if you shoot it with your main guns).

Shred Nebula is too stuck in the past to offer much excitement to the postarcade era. It's an okay diversion for a few hours, although at 800 points there are better bangs for the buck available over Xbox Live.

Just a competent exploratory shooter spoiled by interaction with the pad. [Issue#38, p.115]
Official Xbox Magazine
With clunky controls and no real deterrent from dying--for a Game Over, you simply lose all the points gained so far in the current level--Shred Nebula seems a bit too easy. [Dec 2008, p.73]
Gameplanet
Shred Nebula is a throw-away arcade title with relatively basic features. There's not a lot of substance here, and what enjoyment you can find is invariably fleeting.

Exciting, but the real battle is against the controls. [Dec 2008, p.103]
