While it’s abundantly-clear that SIE is an ode to the original, it’s also thankfully apparent that its creators did their homework on what makes a successful modern video game, too.

While it would be nice if the old school version were included with this new download, “Space Invaders Extreme” is exactly what gamers want in an arcade title – its hard to put down, inexpensive, and a blast to play.

Space Invaders Extreme is a great reboot for fans of the old version, and a great place for new players to experience the classic gameplay.

Space Invaders Extreme is a great update on the classic game and well worth your time and points.

Arcade gamers will find Space Invaders Extreme to be extremely fun.

Altogether, I really enjoyed Space Invaders Extreme because it's a lot of fun and serves as a great revival of a classic franchise.

Still, if you somehow missed this game last year, then there's no excuse for you to not pick up this incredible $10 shooter!

Space Invaders Extreme is a great game, but the bunk network code is a real bummer. If replaying stages for bigger combos and higher scores to unlock more stages and bonus modes sounds like your type of game, though, you'll probably get really obsessed and absolutely get your money's worth.

Space Invaders Extreme is short, but there's plenty to keep your hands, eyes, and ears occupied during this psychedelic invasion.

A firm five on the Keanu Reeves Extreme-O-Meter, but on the Xbox World scale, it's a [4-star]. [Apr 2009, p.105]

Space Invaders Extreme paves the way for retro gaming, with a combination of nostalgia and fresh gameplay elements in a trendy setting. Finished off with a strong musical framework.

It’s one of the better re-makes on the Xbox Live Arcade though the lack of game modes is a slight disappointment, despite the fact that the ones evident in the game do a great job of keeping players entertained.

Modern mechanics give this chestnut new life. [Mar 2009, p.81]

The Xbox Live Arcade version of Taito's 2008 handheld game might have all the same elements that made an incredible shooter on the PSP and Nintendo DS, but as a console experience it's dialed down to simply "good."

I can see myself buying it again for XBLA, just because I enjoy the core game so much. At any rate, it's $5 cheaper than the retail handheld versions, so you're getting an extra affordable edition of a universally-praised shooter.

It’s enjoyable, and brings back nostalgic memories of playing the original Space Invaders in arcades (because I was too young to know that the game was already fifteen years old). However, Space Invaders Extreme is easily overshadowed by two comparable XBLA games: Geometry Wars 2 and Pac-Man Championship Edition.

While not being the first ever re-imagining of Space Invaders, Space Invaders Extreme is certainly the most striking, both visually and mechanically.

Too often, an old game becomes an "extreme" game with the addition of pulsating light displays and techno music. But after the colorful, swirling backgrounds turn to black, Space Invaders Extreme is still just Space Invaders, a game that is over 30 years old.

The whole package is smoother and shinier than Nuno Bettencourt's hair. It's not a bargain, and it's not the best game you'll play this year, but it's probably the best game you'll ever play with the word "Extreme" in the title.

Better than the vast majority of Live Arcade's retro efforts. [Issue#44, p.99]
