Summary

[Xbox Live Arcade] Grab a custom hover-board and lay trail across the urban sprawl, racing through abandoned streets and battling in war-torn arenas. It is an adrenaline pumping action game that combines both arena combat and racing. Meet the cast of rebel Tracers and trick-out your board and weapon through cash and pickup tournaments. Then race, shoot, and grind your way to victory, taking on the circuit champions in single player mode or compete in split screen multiplayer with friends [up to 4 players]. Take it to the next level and go live, competing against 7 fellow Tracers from around the world. Gain ranking supremacy across a range of over 40 leader boards. [Gaia Industries]

Official Xbox Magazine

From its mind-bending control scheme to its smorgasbord of play types, Street Trace's learning curve hews closer to "Catan" than "Hexic". [Aug 2007, p.81]

MS Xbox World

Unfortunately for Street Trace there are just far too many better games coming down the road for it to be able to maintain the multiplayer community it will need to succeed.

GameSpot

Street Trace: NYC provides a few moments of multiplayer amusement, but it doesn't have enough going for it to be compelling for long.

Team Xbox

Somewhat one dimensional, with gameplay that doesn’t inspire a lot of repeat play.

IGN

Hoverboards, combat, angsty riders, and a cabal-ruined New York City should at least make for an amusing game. Instead it's dreadfully boring.

Official Xbox Magazine UK

The game has an admirable variety of modes, from career to arcade to quick play, but with a basic mechanic this crappy, all the variety in the world can't save it. [Feb 2007, p.100]

Xbox World 360 Magazine UK

It's a shame, as what initially looked promising all those months ago when we first saw it, is in fact one of the worst games on Live Arcade. Avoid.

Games Radar (in-house)

It’s a sound idea that’s torpedoed by poor design and bad play mechanics.

Eurogamer

There is a place for more substantial 3D games like this on the platform but Street Trace: NYC provides nothing to recommend itself over the slew of more tightly focussed and expressed rivals on the platform.

GamingExcellence

This game suffers from an extreme lack of polish, and while it may serve as a neat project for grad-school game programmer, Street Trace has no place on Xbox Live Arcade, nor your hard drive.

Worth Playing

Even some bad games can be somewhat enjoyable, but this title started off badly and held up worse.

A piece of crap. [Issue 26, p.118]

games(TM)

Street Trace boils down to a mostly random arena shooter where victory is assured through lucky button mashing rather than any kind of skill. [Nov 2007, p.126]

Bryan M. gave it an8:
This game is pritty fun. its like air bord and Twisted mettal put together. the only lame part is there are limmited wepons to chosse from and upgrades. will get boring pritty quick if you don't have a buddy to play agianst.

Craig D. gave it a7:
Forget the other modes the Area duals are amusing enough. Tony Hawk with guns, it's actually a lot of fun. The graphics aren't anythiny amazing, and it's a bit dark on a SDTV but otherwise if you keen on fast multiplayer action it's quite enjoyable.

The Bus gave it an8:
A flawed, but very entertaining game, Street Trace: NYC combines some of the best and worst aspects of Twisted Metal, Jet Set Radio, Tony Hawk, and Fuzion Frenzy. It doesn't do anything perfectly: the racing is good but not terribly accurate (like Jet Set Radio), the controls seem bewildering at first and only reward you after deep play (like Tony Hawk), the AI seems too easy or too hard, and the voice acting borders on laughable (Fuzion Frenzy). But, like all these titles, the flaws don't keep you from enjoying this game. Frankly, this would be one of the worst games for the 360 if it was a retail release at $20 or $30. But for $10 as an XBLA title, I think it would appeal to any fan of the games I mentioned above and that brings up its ranking.
