I can answer the more immediate question -- whether HD Remix holds up in online play -- with a resounding "Hell, yes." Backbone wisely co-opted fan-favorite peer-to-peer platform GGPO.net, which you can essentially think of as the netcode equivalent of the Google algorithm. This crazy Internet voodoo works well, and it makes for the most lag-free versus play this side of a brick-and-mortar arcade.

Unlike so many remakes of classic fighters, Turbo HD has soul...It’s definitely a must-have title for any self-respecting fighting fan. Period.

HD Remix makes most of those older releases look like cheap cash-ins. It may cost more than most arcade updates available for consoles today, but with the number of important changes being made and its extreme attention to detail, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix sets a new standard for downloadable arcade games... even though I still think Blanka's face doesn't look quite right.

Here's the only issue – if this game could be so masterfully re-created, so well crafted from a blend of original gameplay and much needed updates, all wrapped in a beautifully hand-drawn package that shines in high-definition wide-screen format – why can't every classic game be remade in such a way?

What once was old is now new again and it still maintains that same classic gameplay that helped it to achieve its legendary status.

The single-player is incredibly challenging as is the online multiplayer, so Capcom has given you the chance to reminisce with the beloved series once again and use any one of your favorite 17 characters from the roster.

The quality is further reflected in the silky-smooth online play and detailed options that let you choose how much updating you want.

If you have an HDTV and if you love Street Fighter and if you still have $15 to your name in this economy, you owe it to yourself to download SFII Turbo HD Remix, even if it means skipping a meal.

A huge crowd appeared the second we turned Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on. [Issue#40, p.115]
Game Over Online
If you spent any time at all on SF2 as a kid, on your SNES or Genesis or down at your arcade, this is a must-have nostalgia bomb.

While it lacks large amount of modes and options, the ones provided will keep you punching for hours. In addition, online play is excellent, with very little lag.

This is definitely up there as one of the best versions of Street Fighter 2 available and will most certainly keep you occupied until the true sequel is unleashed next year.

Solid arcade play, great one-on-one local matches, and a multiplayer mode that is almost lag free - this adds up to one of the best gaming values fighting fans could ask for.

If you’re looking for a great warm-up before Street Fighter IV is unleashed, look no further than Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

All of the changes, all of the tweaks, all of the graphical upgrades, remixed music and refinements to the online experience make SSF2THDR one of the best remakes of a classic game in recent memory.

I can't think of a better way to spend your online dollars -- Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is the best version of SFII yet, if not the best Street Fighter game in 15 years.

With HD Remix, it feels like you’re getting the Ferrari of 2D fighters — and it’ll cost you. The game is a moderately pricey $15, and while it’s playable with a standard controller, it pretty much demands a Hori Fighting Stick for the full arcade experience. But on both counts, the payoff is oh-so-worth the sacrifice.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix brings a superb opportunity to play again one of the best fighting games in the history of the videogames. The soul of the classic is no missing in this remake, and it's a must have of this final quarter of 2008.

This is absolutely the best Street Fighter seen in years, but just be ready for a beatdown and you'll be fine.

A legendary game comes to life again with this amazing remake of the amazing Super Street Fighter II Turbo. HD Remix is awesome, featuring the great combat system with new HD graphics, and game modes like the long waited Online. If you like videogames, you must have this little gem. Without excuse.

Overhauled visuals and overloaded features makes this redux a top-tier Street Fighter game.

These minor faults—jerky background characters and a lack of add-on extras for the sake of variety—may seem silly when we're talking about a gorgeous remake of one of the arcade's few luminaries. Still, the lack of renovation below the surface might make the celebration short-lived.

Even though we have had our share of Street Fighter remakes over the past 15 years, this revamped version remains the most interesting of all. If you haven’t bought a downloadable fighting game yet, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix might be the one to get but don’t expect a whole lot of changes besides improved visuals and a few balanced gameplay elements.

In essence then, the utterly superb gameplay and unrivalled feel of this iteration of the Street Fighter series makes it a nigh-on essential purchase, despite the slightly naff reworked graphics.

HD Remix is a worthy stop-off on the road to Street Fighter IV's console release next February, and a good training ground for anyone who wants to learn or relearn the Street Fighter fundamentals before then.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is a great addition to the Street Fighter franchise and will keep dedicated fans entertained for a long time to come. Unfortunately though, new players to the title will most likely be deterred by the fairly steep difficulty curve in Arcade Mode, and the fact that the controls are never really explained.

We’re also happy to inform fans that HD Remix is one of the tightest, lag-free online fighters we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. [Jan 2009, p.104]
Xbox World 360 Magazine UK
One of the best fighting games ever, but it's a series that's been even better since. [Feb 2009, p.102]
NZGamer
Just keep in mind that the d-pad on the 360 controller is probably the worst thing since cancer (seriously, it's that bad) and that the game has a few issues that really do need resolving. If you're lucky enough to have a decent controller, however, don't let the bugs stop you getting on board - it's solid Street Fighter action to its very core.

That doesn't mean the online play is perfect. In fact, many people have reported matchmaking issues and assorted glitches. Matchmaking shouldn't be a problem when playing with friends via invites (on either PSN or XBL), but when playing random players it's a mixed bag.
