Summary
Surf's Up is an arcade surfing and extreme sports video game. The action is set at the annual "Reggie Belafonte Big Z Memorial Surf Off," where surfers from around the world are ready to risk it all for glory. Players experience the rush and thrills of surfing in exotic surf spots around Pen Gu Island and can rip it up and play as one of 10 characters from the film, including Cody, the young challenger from Shiverpool; Tank, the merciless champion; or Big Z, the surfing legend from the past. Only by mastering and understanding the waves can the player become not only the new champion, but a true surf legend. Game features include: Innovative arcade and surf feeling with players performing a variety of impressive tricks in the air and learning to surf inside a tube. Win the championship in the single-player mode or challenge your friends in the multiplayer mode with easy pick-up-and-play game controls. Surf in a variety of locations, each with its own waves and obstacles. Train in the calm water of Shiverpool, ride your first tubes in Pen Gu Island, and try to surf on the explosive waters of the volcano area. [Ubisoft]

I would recommend it to any parent looking to play games with their kids.

Surf’s Up could have been another crappy shovelware title based on yet another animated movie license. Instead it turned out to be one hell of a fun ride, albeit an extremely short one.
Read Full Review >Games Radar (in-house)
The humor, characters and, most obviously, the difficulty of Surf's Up are geared towards a younger audience, but the game is also fun enough for anyone to play, although the simplicity might keep it from having a very long shelf life in most collections.

Seen through adult eyes, it's a sweet but slender surfing game that's consistently amusing.

This is the first licensed game I’ve played that is actually shorter than its movie. I’m not exaggerating; in a little over an hour I had received trophies in all of the main surf events.

The gameplay is simple but enjoyable and kids in love with the movie are sure to have a good time with the game, but the fact remains that this is a bloated price tag on a barebones game.

Hanging 10 in this movie-licensed surfing game has its moments--just don't expect to enjoy it for very long.

The tricks lack complexity and the game can be beaten in a couple of sittings. However, young ones should enjoy the fun presentation and the enjoyable multiplayer mode.

The game appeals to kids, thanks to its colorful characters, but adults will find it too easy. The tricks lack complexity and the game can be beaten in a couple of sittings.

If you’re a kid and a big fan of the Tony Hawk series of skateboarding titles or similar games, Surf’s Up may be a cool addition to your collection as it is a decent pick up and play title for the ankle-biters but it really doesn’t present much of a challenge to anyone who has experienced puberty.

It's a wise parent that rents, as those tiny gamers will make short work of this fun but brief experience. [Aug 2007, p.81]
Team Xbox
If the game were quite a bit longer or featured more variety, we’d feel fine recommending it to all the kiddies out there, but as it is now we can’t help thinking that even a 6 year old would feel gypped.

Consider this reviewer's naïve attitude and eternally hopeful gullibility well and truly slaughtered and replaced by a seething and consuming hatred of anything that gets unceremoniously squeezed out of Hollywood's all-profit-no-quality bunghole.

Let there be no doubt, Surf's Up is strictly for kids in love with the movie. The redundancy of the gameplay will certainly help to break one's obsession with all things penguin in a weekend. Definitely a rental.

Certainly not a game for anyone expecting a challenge or long-term entertainment. [Oct 2007, p.86]

Stephane J. gave it a3:
Awful, just awful. No freedom at all, which is a pity for a surf game. The rendition of water is plain terrible, and the controls are too simplistic.
Gideon V. D. gave it a10:
Some of the best water graphics I've ever seen!
Dave C. gave it an8:
This game is amazing to me man! Being a huge surfing fan (I used to get my board out and pretend to surf when I was living inland) I was keen to check this game out. I was a little worried about the cartoon aspect because I love realism, however this game exceeded my expectations. I sit back with a few brewskies and play with friends via webcam...surf's up!
