[Xbox Live Arcade] The 1989 Classic Arcade game, originally published by Konami and most recently developed for Xbox LIVE Arcade by Digital Eclipse, has come to the Xbox LIVE Arcade. The TMNT arcade game brings the nostalgia of the early coin-op arcade days of gaming and features the original seven levels, two- to four-player co-op modes and voice- chat capabilities and be available for download for 400 Microsoft Points ($5 U.S.). Different turtles: Choose from one of four Ninja Turtles—Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello or Raphael—and master their unique ninja butt-kickin' abilities. Comic book characters: Interact with unforgettable characters, including Splinter, Casey Jones, April O'Neal, Baxter Stockman, and Shredder. [Ubisoft]

Planet Xbox 360
TMNT boasts 200 achievement points attainable through a variety of different tasks such as beating a level in a specific time limit or beating a boss without being injured. The addition of online co-op multiplayer and the other small features are great and add some replay value to an already cheap game.

Look at it this way – at 400 points, this game is essentially 20 quarters worth of gameplay. If you ever played the game in the arcade, odds are good you used up at least that many.

To Ubisoft’s credit, they did as much as they really could have with the original content, and should be merited for the game’s feature set; especially the online four player co-op.

The four-player co-op is pretty much what makes this update of the classic arcade Turtles beat-'em-up worth downloading, though the $5 price doesn't hurt either.

Outside of nostalgia the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is short and shallow. Then again, it's also an exciting action game full of great characters and cool levels. The fact that this version of the game allows you to play online makes this a must own for anybody who loved the turtles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may be worth a look for fans of the franchise or those who played this baby in the arcades all those years ago, but many modern gamers will be turned off by the ugly graphics and repetitive gameplay.

While hardly resembling the game that could do not wrong from my childhood, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Classic Arcade Game still stands as an enjoyable piece of Eighties gaming lore, but without a warm jacket of nostalgic feelings it will appear outdated and boring, lacking present day sensibilities.

TMNT 1989 has its share of problems...Nevertheless, the game remains a solid thrill. [June 2007, p.76]
Official Xbox Magazine UK
It's a good solid beat 'em up, if occasionally a little unfair. [June 2007, p.95]

Knock [10 points] off the score if you're not a fan. This brawler exemplifies what arcade games used to be.

After having beaten it a few times both offline and online, and realizing it's more simplistic and offers less replay value than, say, "Ms. Pac-Man" or "Dig-Dug," I admit to being disappointed.

Hopefully, when the second game in the series hits (Turtles in Time), unlimited continues will be part of the package.

A laggy mess online. [Issue#23, p.96]
360 Gamer Magazine UK
The game itself isn't bad; it's just blatantly average. [Issue 25, p.68]

With unlimited credits in the single player, you’ll wonder why you are playing a game that offers absolutely no challenge, since the removal of the credit system allows you to hammer X all day long without worrying about your credits running out. The Achievements won’t keep you playing, since the majority require a fair bit of work to get.

Turtles is about as shallow as gaming gets, with even less to offer than Renegade, a game already three years old by the time this hit the arcade...Even at 400 points, that's pretty shoddy value.

Lars gave it a9:
Besides Geometry Wars, this is the arcade game i have gotten the most value out of for about 5 bucks. The achievements are what really keeps it going, and unfortunately a few bugs hold it down, such as not being able to unlock the Turtle Soup achievement in single player. Other than that, I have been playing this game for a long time. SIngle player is great, but with the added four player online CO-OP, it is awesome. Just get it. It is awesome.
Ryan P. gave it an8:
This game is easily a bargain at only $5. Single player mode offers unlimited continues, which kind of ruins the challenge of this game, but it allows you to just pick up and complete the game in 30-40 minutes when you feel like playing it. Online play is when it gets more interesting. You're only given 20 continues to share (doesn't matter if you are playing 2-4 players.) Add in online voice support and achievements this game is a awesome deal.
Jason S. gave it an8:
As someone who dumped many quarters into this game as a kid, it's great to have a cheap trip down memory lane. Admittedly, if you don't have a history w/ this game, you'll probably find it boring unless you've got 3 pals to play it with. But as a pick up and play game, it's great.
