Summary
In Tetris Evolution, players enjoy not only traditional Tetris gameplay but numerous new modes including "Go Low" and "Eraser" for both single and multiplayer. The multiplayer mode not only allows for up to four players on a single console, but players can now compete with up to four players via the Xbox Live online entertainment service. Contributing to the online experience are the new intelligent matchmaking system, which pits players against others within their skill level, as well as the online ladder system, which enables players to track their overall skill level and accumulate Xbox Live achievement points to increase their Gamerscore. Tetris Evolution allows players to take advantage of Xbox 360's high-definition capabilities with intense graphics that make the Tetriminos appear to pop off the screen and more than a dozen high-definition background videos. The game also features customizable themes, skins, icons and soundtracks to create a personalized gaming experience. [THQ]

Definitely get this game if you love Tetris and want to embark in the world of online multiplayer battles. If you just plan to play it offline by yourself or with friends, then the look of it is the only reason to get the game, as it's a bit more polished than the older "Tetris Worlds" and it supports high definition, in addition to the fact that you can select different avatars and themes that weren't there in previous versions.

It's the same Tetris you've always loved. Only...busier. [June 2007, p.74]
Game Over Online
While it ends up being a disappointing game due to its bloated backdrops, poor music, and control problems, Tetris Evolution does a fine job at providing players with an enjoyable, basic game of Tetris on the 360. I think it would have been better suited as an XBLA download.

The single-player and multiplayer options are solid yet predictable, and the game's got all the personality of a screensaver. If 22 years of Tetris have left you tired of the formula, Tetris Evolution will do very little to reignite your passion for this classic Russian mind-bender.

For what it’s worth, Tetris Evolution delivers all the juicy Tetris action but falls short in terms of the controls that make this a game that would have been more appropriate as an Xbox Live download.

If you don’t mind dishing out a few extra bucks for a game you’ve played hundreds of time before, just keep in mind that the Xbox 360 controller holds back the gameplay needlessly.

The gameplay is essentially the same as it has ever been, but instead of having only one game mode, there are a bunch of variants for you to meddle with. It’s good if you LOVE Tetris and can’t get enough, but newcomers shouldn’t expect to find a mode that straps certain powers onto different colored blocks.

$30 is a lot for Tetris, especially when most of the extras you've got piled on top of the basic game are worthless. You're better off playing Tetris elsewhere, or waiting for an Arcade version.

Yes, it should have been a Live Arcade release, but its price, plethora of game modes and the fact that the original tune is included, means puzzle fans should definitely give it a whirl. [Issue#20, p.92]

You know what would be a perfect fit? Tetris on Xbox Live Arcade. It’s really hard to understand why THQ didn’t take that route for this game.

Honestly, Tetris Evolution serves as one of the sorriest excuses for a retail title on the 360.

After playing for a while, you'll realize that Tetris Evolution may have been better suited as an Xbox Live Arcade game priced somewhere closer to $10. There is no real evolution to be seen; it's the same classic Tetris you've played for years, albeit with a handful of different game modes and a few more graphical options in an attempt to stir up the experience.

Packing all the charm and charisma of a shareware PC game (only considerably more expensive), Tetris Evolution is as dull as it is tedious. Don’t be seduced by its empty promises of Tetris goodness at a bargain price, get something else instead.
Tetris Evolution isn’t really an evolution of any sorts, it’s more like devolution. I felt "Tetris Worlds" was a far superior product that didn’t try to add flash to cover up for its lack of content.

Put next to the (unfairly derided) Lumines Live, Tetris Evolution is clunky, overpriced and devoid of compelling new features, and with the Xbox 360 controller's directional pad putting in its usual awkward performance, it's hard to think of a reason to recommend this to anybody.

This hasn't moved on from the last generation of Tetris at all. [July 2007, p.102]
1UP
Customizable background themes, icons, and skins are offered to spice up the aesthetic, but they're not the least bit pleasant to look at and offer about as much artistry as clip art.

With the limited variation in modes and the lackluster multiplayer, I simply couldn't justify spending an entire $30 on Tetris Evolution. Especially not when I can get a superior version for my Nintendo DS.
In short, everything that Evolution changes from the original Tetris is a bad idea that makes the game worse. That this game sells for $30 is a joke, there are much better games for cheaper on Xbox Live Arcade.

For Pete’s sake, the music even sounds tired –in the same way that you may imagine a weary 70 year-old musician at the end of the last show in the nth tour he’s had in the quarter might feel.

Rob P. gave it an8:
Tetris Evolution is a must have for every Tetris fan! There are so many little different achievements that you strive to unlock. Since the primary function of the game hasn't changed in years, THQ was able to make pretty cool lookin' backgrounds, but they can get very distracting in game. I tend to choose less fancy backgrounds to concentrate on the pieces! It was definitely worth every penny of the $30 I paid for!
