I was very surprised at how good Ticket to Ride is and still go back to play it even after writing this review, which is a rarity for me when it comes to Xbox Live games.

I flat out love this game. The XBLA version of Ticket to Ride is faithful to the original. It’s actually better.

For the sheer amount of fun that strategy fans will have with this XBLA offering, it's very easy to overlook its few imperfections.

While some may fault it for only including a single map for the asking price, this XBLA iteration remains the cheapest way to enjoy the full Ticket to Ride experience!

While the game might not appeal to those looking for their XBLA games to pack a little extra visual punch, it's "All aboard!" for those trying to find a relaxing new way to do Game Night with friends.

Another classic board game conversion, and well worthe the price. [Oct 2008, p.84]

If you enjoyed Catan and Carcasonne then you'll be right on track with this.

While the core experience is solid, Ticket To Ride misses more than a few opportunities.

It's not a perfect adaptation of the German game it's based on, since the map can sometimes get cluttered while the nuances of the game aren't always terribly well explained, but compared to the rather flaccid likes of Lost Cities this is one of those games that hides a devilishly addictive experience under a rather bland exterior.

This actually proves pretty deep. [Issue#36, p.114]

This railroad-inspired board game offers subtle strategy and an easy learning curve for less than the price of a real train ticket.

It's nice to feel engrossed by a board game again. [July 2008, p.66]

If strategic board games like Catan and Carcassonne are your thing, by all means grab Ticket to Ride, it's definitely a worthy addition to any self respecting board gamers library of Xbox Live Arcade games.

The multiplayer is the best I’ve seen in an XBOX Live Arcade title.

No, it’s not Catan… But, it doesn’t have to be. This is a buy for all board game, Catan, Carcassonne fans, and for someone looking to play a new video strategy game that is as fun as the board game.

The biggest problem that most will have with Ticket to Ride is that it’s slow, but that’s inherent to board games themselves. The multiplayer is decent and the strategy elements are good and reasonably deep.

Even too much of a good thing can end up ruining a nice little niche genre, so perhaps if there's one serious criticism to make of Ticket to Ride, it's that it could be one title too many for even the most fervent train fan or board game fanatic.

One of the smartest board ports yet, with a cracking interface to go with it. [Oct 2008, p.102]
Worth Playing
If you love turn-based card games, board games, or have played the real-life equivalent of Ticket To Ride, it'll be an easy choice.

Ticket to Ride will split gamers' opinions. For those who love this genre, there is no reason not to enjoy this game. But for people who do not like slow-paced European board games, Ticket to Ride is not likely to change your view of the genre.

Ben K. gave it an8:
Faithful adaptation of the board game. Music and sound effects are sparse. Red and orange look almost alike. Cards are missing symbols, making things difficult for the colorblind.
Evan B. gave it a10:
This is one of my favorite board games over the last few years, and this port does the job without getting in the way. It is quick and easy to learn, but there is a lot of depth to playing; there isn't too much planning on every move, like some other games so decisions can be fairly quick. Like all board games it isn't speedy, but if you want something speedy, you aren't going to be playing a video game version of a board game. I'm very much looking forward to the expansions for this game because i really like the Europe board, and the 1910 expansion. This is definitely one of the best board games in recent years and is great for the whole family, and a great introduction to modern board games to people who don't normally play them.
Andy V. gave it an8:
I've been kinda surprised by some of the reviews, criticising it for being slow (an inherent feature of most board games...its no slower than carcassonne, catan and certainly not monopoly) or for there being too many board games on xbla is silly. It should be reviewew on its own merits, the depth of the strategy, the interface, its addictive nature etc. So...it doesnt have the same level of strategy as something like carcassonne or catan and i was kinda disappointed with the content provided (only one map and mode despite mentioning europe and other modes in the instructions which well get charged for via dlc). However the game is extremely addictive and the best board game ive played on 360 since carcassonne. Would thoroughly recommend it to any fans of the genre, particularly for its online play.
Steven H. gave it a9:
It's quite simple: If you like board games, you'll enjoy this game. If you don't like board games, you probably won't. As an avid board game player, I think that this game is great. There's nothing like being about to play a great board game with people all over the world, or even against the computer if you feel like it.
Adam J. gave it a10:
One of the best arcade games on Xbox live. If you like board games, you'll love it. My wife is obsessed too, which doesn't happen often with games.
Thomas A gave it a9:
A fantastic addition to the XBLA board game collection, probably even better than Catan and Carcassonne. The game has a great balance between strategy and luck, and the team did an excellent job bringing the experience to the video game world. Any complaints are minor -- such as red tracks being hard to differentiate from orange tracks -- but nothing that detracts from the experience. A must-buy for any board game fan!
Joe gave it a9:
Nice game! Great for when I need the pace slowed down a bit, but decent strategy. Strategy is a weakness on Xbox. Glad this one is around.
