Summary

[Xbox Live Arcade] Battle as mighty video warrior Tron against the insidious Master Control Program and his ruthless right-hand man, Sark. Tron offers a retro-futuristic test of gaming ability. Race life cycles, demolish tanks, dodge grid bugs, and even face off against the MCP himself to find out who truly rules the computer world! Tron is a perfect recreation of the classic arcade game based on the pioneering computer animated Disney film. Authentic graphics, gameplay and audio have all been upgraded to take advantage of the high-definition graphics and CD bit rate quality of Xbox 360. Now you can be a part of the most famous scene from the movie. Ride your blue cycle and battle the enemy yellow cycles in a gridline battle royale. Exterminate the Grid Bugs and escape into the I/O Tower before time runs out. Demolish all enemy tanks and Recognizers to clear the board. Smash the blocks and move your character into the MCP cone to clear the level. A bonus is awarded if you destroy all the blocks. The original arcade game was single player only. Now, Xbox LIVE Arcade brings you the first version of the game with two-person multiplayer functionality. Multiplayer modes: Split screen and online, co-op and versus, there are lots of ways to playTron. In Versus mode, the players race to achieve the highest score. Try Versus Speed mode, where the first player to reach a host-defined score wins. In Co-op, both players' scores are added together to achieve a high score. And beware the Pressure Cooker where players race to achieve the highest score, but taking the lead after a sub-stage causes the other player's game speed to increase. [Midway]

Official Xbox Magazine

While you'll miss the novelty of a glowing blue joystick and an analog spinner, setting the controls to "Absolute Aim" (preset C or D) gives you enough precision to do battle on the Game Grid. [July 2007, p.79]

Team Xbox

The sole purpose of a coin-op ROM is to steal quarters away from the user. With that said, some of Tron’s achievements can be very difficult since such goals were originally designed as quarter munchers.

GameSpot

The Xbox Live Arcade release of Tron hobbles this absolute arcade classic with some technical problems.

It’s obvious to see that Tron hasn’t lasted the “test of time.” For only 400 MS Points, you shouldn’t expect much more than a straight up port with a few additions thrown on top.

Planet Xbox 360

A disappointing experience. Leave this one in your childhood memories, where you did not mind how shallow it was.

IGN

The visual style will bring feelings of nostalgia to those who are old enough to remember the original, but like most classic XBLA releases the notion is fleeting. Once it wears off all you’re left with is a game that controls poorly and isn’t all that much fun to play.

Video Game Talk

Another case of a classic game that's just a bit overpriced on the Xbox Live Marketplace, but probably can't reduce the price due to Microsoft's pricing format.

Do you love wrestling with duff, clunky controls and replaying the same four levels over and over and over again? [Issue#30, p.119]

While this game was once top of the line it hasn’t aged well nor has it been given a new coat of paint to make it more visually appealing.

If you really must play Tron then by all means, but don't say I didn't warn you, as the appeal wears off pretty quickly.

Eurogamer

It deserved to be left dying in the gutter, begging for loose change, and is in no way a glorious representation of a fondly remembered era of classic arcade gaming. It's a clunky, somewhat charming period piece that's interesting for five minutes if you have childhood associations with it, but, for everyone else, it isn't even worth going beyond the free trial version.

Once a great game in the arcade, now not worth mentioning on Xbox Live Arcade. The controls are way too slow and inaccurate and everything feels so outdated. Not worth 400 points!

Games Radar (in-house)

We suspect that control scheme would work better if it emulated that found in games like Robotron 2084 or Geometry Wars - though that wouldn't be as authentic, it could make Tron a fantastic Live Arcade game. But as it is, this just doesn't work.

I suppose things could've been worse: they could've done a poorly emulated version of the Intellivision hit "Maze-A-Tron."

Console Monster

Magnificently reproduced in a way to feel terrible even for a port of a 1982 arcade title.

khan800 gave it a7:
I'm having a lot of fun playing this game, but it may be just the retro vibe that's responsible. The controls are fairly wonky, Tron for XBLA really misses the spinner from the arcade machine. Overall, they did with it about all they could do with the limitations of the controller. They did incorporate online modes (vs. and co-op) but the net code is lacking. If you like(d) Tron, and don't mind mastering the dual analog sticks, you'll enjoy this game, but I imagine the younger crowd may go 'wtf'.
