Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Wing Commander Arena is a fast-paced space combat game where players can team up to attack other teams of ships. The game introduces the classic franchise to an arcade-style experience that allows up to 16 players online in battle at once. Players can propel their customized ship through space, fire torpedoes and unleash deadly gravity bombs as they try to climb the leader board. Online players will compete for Frag count, high score and dueling stats. Wing Commander Arena features four styles of play: single player, multi-team, multi-player free for all and multi-player duel. Within the game there are eight game maps that include team maps, free for all maps and dueling maps, so Wing Commander Arena offers a gameplay experience for every Arcade gamer, whether they want a quick ten minutes of action or a longer more immersive game. Official Xbox Magazine
Between equipment variety, handling differences, respawning pick-ups, and the cunning nooks and crannies of each map, the emergent strategic possibilities deliver surprising depth. [Aug 2007, p.72]
Team Xbox
All-in-all, Wing Commander Arena is what an Xbox Live Arcade game should be about- fast-paced pick-up-and-play action with a dash of depth. If you can live with being lost in space, and in only one plane of such a vast expanse, then download Wing Commander Arena post-haste.

Honestly for 10 dollars/800 MS Points you really can’t go wrong with Wing Commander Arena.
Read Full Review >Planet Xbox 360
Wing Commander Arena attempts to revive the past with a lukewarm effort that many fans might find to be blasphemous. WCA was built around the multiplayer experience, but the inability to keep your group of gamers together in player matches goes against the spirit of Xbox Live.

It offers a lot of options for your 800-points and 16-player team battles can be quite enjoyable, but there's just not enough meat on its bones to constitute a satisfying meal.

Wing Commander Arena should only be downloaded by spaceship nuts that need to play every sci-fi game. Otherwise, you may want to pass on it.

As long as you go into this game realizing that it in no way resembles anything truly Wing Commander, and are prepared for a shareware style 2D space shooter with limited fun and potential, knock yourself out.

It manages to be both convoluted and shallow all at the same time. Playing this game can literally be related to Lost in Space.

Wing Commander Arena has the right idea, but the gameplay and presentation come together to form an extremely dull experience.

Four modes, 18 different ships, loads of weapons and power-ups, none of it especially enjoyable. [Sept 2007, p.96]
Edge Magazine
Perhaps EA would have done better to port a previous Wing Commander game in its totality rather than staple the name to a somewhat anaemic effort of an awkwardly inauthentic shape. [Oct 2007, p.99]
Eurogamer
Wing Commander Arena is a rudimentary shooter, the sort of thing that might have passed muster as a homebrew PC title ten years ago, but an unimpressive trudge for console gamers today.

A wasted opportunity. [Sept 2007, p.109]

Rubbish. [Issue#24, p.101]

Jacknick2 gave it a10:
Better than most offerings on live arcade.
Pekka S. gave it a10:
It's a great addition to XBLA. Good Co-op.
HWN Darkside gave it a6:
I don't know what game some of those ^^^ reviews were playing - but scoring 80+ is far too generous. Worth 800 points? Maybe. Single player lacks any depth and is no more than training for multiplayer battles. Fortunately mulitplayer options are reasonable entertainment. The controls are a bit limiting and the fact you only fly in 2D seems a bit lame, but you do get upto 4 weapons per ship and 18 ship to choose from, all with their own individual weapons set and handling. Only buy if you like shooting stuff.
