Genre(s): Sports, Soccer

Players: 8

ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)

Release Date: February 6, 2007

Summary

Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 expands upon the series' realism with faster gameplay, more responsive control and improved artificial intelligence. Players will now make intelligent runs without the ball, identifying opportunities and pointing to where they would like the ball to be delivered. Similarly, the game is now more physical, with defenders jockeying for position and strikers working to turn their opponent as they receive the ball. The game's shooting system has also been refined, letting players take more snap shots, while volleys have been updated for more player control. Players can also enjoy the Beautiful Game in more ways than ever before with new play modes. International Challenge mode lets players compete through four continents of opposition to become a champion, while Random Selection Match lets gamers take the field with a group of players selected at random from a predetermined league or geographic area. The Master League mode returns with more options, allowing players to take complete control of their favorite team and control its destiny for an extended period of time. The game's roster of teams is also expanded with new, fully-licensed international teams for players to use including Argentina, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, as well as additional club teams. Gamer 2.0

Even with some recycled content, and the bland menus, Winning Eleven boils down to one key aspect that no other soccer title has; great core gameplay.

Games Radar (in-house)

A lack of licensed teams, missing players (where are the Americans?), and super-shiny graphics doesn't take too much away from the sublime execution. However, we won't be quite as pleased next year unless there's more emphasis on the extras.

But for sheer pleasure of play, nobody can touch this game's winning spirit. [Mar 2007, p.78]

WHAM! Gaming

What it lacks in style off the field, it very much makes up for it on field, which as a purists representation of the beautiful game, is exactly what matters.

Though they can get away with it this year, EA’s FIFA franchise is rapidly closing the gap. Here’s hoping Winning Eleven 2008 returns to top form.

IGN

An impressive soccer game. Still, it's disappointing that Konami continues to rest on its laurels in the graphics, sound and presentation areas of the game, although the gameplay remains fluid and fantastic.

Graphical enhancements and the 360's online leader boards make this game the best offering of the series to date. This game will have you building attacks out of the back, running the flanks, targeting your strikers, and exploiting counters.

Konami's seminal football game finally makes its way to the Xbox 360, but it doesn't fulfil many next-generation ambitions.

If all you want to do is play football with friends then PES will still provide you with everything you need. Just don’t go expecting miracles as it is still very much another evolution in the series, we might have to wait until next year for the revolution.

Although the game's presentation is markedly improved, it seems as though we'll have to wait until Pro Evolution Soccer 7 marks its appearance on the PlayStation3 before we really see what Seabass can muster with the next-generation.

It looks the same, plays the same, feels the same and, praise the lord, actually is the same. Maybe a bit too 'the same' if you've played it every year for the last five years, but still. It'll do.

What we have is solid, and refinements could propel it back to glory, but really it's high time we started over from scratch...It's hard not to think that the series has taken a noticeable step backwards at a time when EA's busy taking giant steps with "FIFA."

Winning Eleven's superior graphics and the best control of any soccer game to date easily overshadows its minor problems. The tournament and player creation/develop modes add to the playability of the title and cement it as the supreme soccer title.

Even with the flaws and lack of features, this plays significantly better than the competition. It might not live up to its PS2 counterpart, but its faults don't stop it from being top of the Xbox 360 league.

For this next-gen installment in the famed soccer series, Konami has taken a page from developer Visual Concepts' book--keep last generation's engine in place and don't make any sudden moves. [Mar 2007, p.99]

Next Level Gaming

Konami can only move the train on gameplay for so long before the gas runs out. With the edit options missing, the removal of the German league, and many features missing I have a feeling that the competition is catching up very fast and with "FIFA’08" we might be crowning a new champion.

Konami has created yet another title that gets by on its fantastic gameplay engine, but does little to create a new fan base through features or truly next-gen gameplay. But for once the cleat is now on the other foot.

Unlike the PS2 version, team and player names cannot be changed. This is a problem because many of the world's most famous teams and players are not licensed, meaning you'll be stuck playing generic teams such as the London Soccer Club.

The inability to edit teams and players is a huge minus for a game that thrives on that very ability, and the lag over Xbox Live is quite bad. Yet and still, the polished gameplay and AI that have made the series shine brightly are intact here.

If you really want to play online though, or the game modes are important to you, the PlayStation 2 game is by far the better choice. This year Konami can just about be forgiven for short-changing Xbox 360 owners, but next year's game better be next-gen.

Although the tweaks and alterations since the last version are only minor, Pro Evolution Soccer is still a decent footie game. But this year the gap between "FIFA" and PES has grown ever tighter. The overall experience of "FIFA" is certainly better but PES still has the hardcore gameplay.

The PlayStation 2 game is the more complete package. While there are many things to like about the Xbox 360 version, a few lock-up bugs, laggy and limited online play, and some head-scratching omissions from previous games means all but the most ardent footy fans should wait until the next installment before moving onto greener pastures -- and pitches.

Jimmy S. gave it a10:
This is the best football/soccer video game made to date. It takes up all my video game playing time. Very addictive, realistic game play. Master league is awesome and online play is a blast. This game is by FAR the best and most realistic sports video game, period.

Slaven C. gave it a10:
You sucas all talking some nonsense. The game did not even come out yet. FIFA 07 --> GARBAGE all you have to do is master the FINESSE shot and you can score from anywhere --> bunch of crap and very unrealistic. WE10 a lot more realistic and better.

Mark P. gave it a5:
Sooo disappointed with the 360 version. Graphics are drab, there is only half (if that) of the options, themenus are not nearly as easy to navigate .. on the up side - the faces look good close up. Poor show Konami - one of your Iss / PES fans for life is upset with you.

Peace Squid gave it a2:
The worst PES yet. Seabass, your series is dying. The gap between this and Fifa is closing because PES is standing still and has been for 3 or 4 years now. PES6 on the PS2 is a rip off, on the 360 it's practically criminal.

Simon G. gave it a9:
Don't get me wrong this game is great, to me the best in the series, great graphics (on the 360) and i like the new quick freekick. gameplay is a slowed down so makes it feel so much more realistic. man utd and arsenal only proper named treams this time round.. but here is why i dont give it 10/10:: konami i know its it debut on the 360 but why o why did you leave the edit mode out, this might not anger some of you but it does me, yeah you can edit the players name's but that is it, so i have to put up with chelsea called london fc and liverpool called merseyside red, this will anger some people i guarantee it. it just feels a little bit empty in some departments.. bring on pro evo 7 9/10.
