Summary
[Xbox Live Arcade] Worms is a turn-based strategy game in which teams of heavily armed worms battle across bizarre, randomly generated landscapes for supremacy. Each team takes turns picking off opposing team members using crazy weapons, tools and other utilities along with whatever foul strategies they can devise. The simple and cute appearance belies the deep strategy of a game that is easy to play but difficult to master. A mix of strategy and arcade action that, although simple to understand, contains real depth and massive re-playability. Turn-based multiplayer action for up to four players locally or over Xbox Live. An assortment of game options: Landscape on which to do battle, Turn and round times, Starting weapon arsenal for each team, Three detailed tutorials to introduce the mechanics to first-time players, Twenty increasingly difficult single-player challenges, Three graphical themes for play, A random landscape generator to ensure that no two landscapes are ever the same, Twenty-two weapons and utilities to deploy against your enemies, Many customisable elements, including what worms and teams are named, what worms say, and which gravestone they have when they die, Twelve achievements, Weekly, monthly and overall leaderboards. There are few better multiplayer games in existence, and no better ones on Xbox Live Arcade. If your gaming habits ever include playing with others, online or off, Worms is utterly essential.

A genius concept thanks to exploding sheep, homing missiles, air strikes and Street Fighter special moves. [Issue 19, p.116]

Worms HD has it’s moments that dazzle on screen and in gameplay. Namely the online component is really where you’ll want to play; but it ends up as a great local multiplayer with your real-life friends (if you have any).

Even with the limited themes, Worms has a lot of legs, or at least a lengthy slimy belly, and it’s a worthy addition to XBLA, especially as a multiplayer game over Live.

Perfect multiplayer customisation. [May 2007, p.94]

You’ll enjoy playing the game, but you won’t be able to stop wondering what the game could have been without the 50 MB limit.

But assuming that last issue gets resolved in the coming weeks, Worms is a fantastic addition to your Live Arcade library

It loses a few points due to the price, but it's an otherwise fine game.

A crisp high definition version of a classic game and, with hardly any faults, can be considered one of the best Live Arcade purchases you'll make. [Issue 24, p.70]
Gaming Nexus
Worms for the Xbox Live Arcade does an excellent job of recreating the fun and excitement of the series, but it's slightly disappointing to see so many modes and weapons stripped from the experience. Still, if you're looking for a great game to play with friends or online, then you can't go wrong with Worms.

It’s a shame that some of the backgrounds and voice packs seem to have been limited for that trademarked MSP exploitation later on, but even in its most basic form, Worms is still highly recommended.

A faithful adaptation of the popular series, and while it isn't without its faults, is some of the most fun you can have in multiplayer on Live.

Team 17’s masterpiece is one of the funniest strategic games around. This new HD edition brings to today standards an immortal classic.

Worms offers almost limitless level designs, great multiplayer action for 4 people online and off and a basic but vital ingredient for any game – fun!

At the very least, the 360's first "Worms" game recalls the series' hearty roots--and for that, we're thankful. [Mar 2007, p.79]
GameSpot
It does right by the classic Worms gameplay, and it's probably the best-looking Worms game ever; but a shortness of features makes it feel a little bare-bones, not to mention a little overpriced.

Worms may lack all of the bells and whistles that purists have come to expect, but the core game (especially when played online) still holds up – and that counts for a lot.

If you've played a Worms game before, you know what you're getting here. It's just too bad that the full weapon set wasn't included or a more robust map editor. The result is a game that is fun, but feels like you don't have the full package.

Worms feels more dumbed down than watered down, and 800 points is a lot for the novelty of playing an old game in HD. Still, if you buy it, people will most certainly come out to play, and ultimately the gameplay transcends the rather sparse contents.

There is nothing else like this on XBLA, and you really should put down Gears of War and give this a try. The core gameplay of Worms is time-tested, family appropriate, and a riot for all non-computer players involved.

If you don't already own a version, or have done in the past but got rid if it, then Worms on XBLA is well worth a punt for the price. To get the most out of it though, Worms is best enjoyed with mates over Live.

The "Worms" series has been around for years, but it's finally found the perfect home on Live Arcade. [May 2007, p.68]
Team Xbox
Ultimately, it’s Worms’ lack of features that is its downfall. There’s a semblance of a map editor, but there’s no real user control. Why can’t I place my own objects or shape my own terrain? Why do I have to let the computer do it? And why don’t I have access to weapons that past Worms installments have had?

Despite being tremendously slim, Worms is still fun, looks glorious in high definition, and the controls translate very well to the Xbox 360 pad.

But for a few missing weapons, then (sorry - a few dozen missing weapons), this is as close to the series' peak as we've been since the days when the novelty hadn't worn off on the PC, and given the right company you'll find it quite approachable, with simple controls and the usual potential for comedy failure.

Steve C. gave it a4:
Very disappointed with this game. I expected a port of the brilliant Worms:Armageddon - but this is more like Worms 1.0 beta lite.
Sam F. gave it a9:
This is a great little arcade version of Worms and don't let the nay-sayers convince you otherwise. If you want a million weapons that get more and more ludicrous with every edition of the game, then go back to the myriad of other Worms games and play on your own. This is like the original Worms with suped up , Armageddon graphics. Yes, the settings are basic, but if you want a full-blown Worms game, wait til Team 17 bring out the next instalment, but this is the Live Arcade version which, by necessity, needs to be simple and it is... and it's a joy to play! As ever though, the main problem is the Xbox Live... not the game itself, but the idiots who play online, lose two of their Worms early on and bail out of the game, leaving the rest of the players with the "Game session is no longer available" message and nothing to do other than restart the game. I do hope Xbox bring out some kind of system that allows for automatic punishment of early leavers.
Rick R. gave it a5:
The poorest quality Worms game ever made. Fewer weapons and settings than previous versions, buggy and some of the single player AI is too tough. (leading to overly defensive matches) I would have liked the buttons mapped differently as well, jump is assigned to the X button and fire weapon is A (the key that most programs use for jumping). The franchise should have been represented better than this.
Boggy B. gave it a2:
This isn't the Worms I was expecting. It's like a cheap knockoff.
Drew P. gave it a3:
Unfortunately, while this game can be fun for a little while, it is a huge step backwards in terms of content and won't have nearly the longevity of the older games. Team17 missed the mark here by trying to target "casual gamers" instead of their existing fanbase but instead making the game appeal most to the more hardcore players.
Nicholas F. gave it a9:
Even if you haven't been a follower of the Worms series since its inception many years ago, you should still give this addictive little game a try. It's like artillery on steroids with a touch of Cartoon Network. If they hadn't scaled down the weapon and map sets, I would have given it a 10. If you've never played Worms in its previous incarnations on the PC, though, you probably won't miss the omisisons.
Ek-O gave it a10:
CLASSIC! This game is one of the best. More weaponswould have made it better, but this is well worth the few bucks spent.
