Summary
You're in the Movies brings the cool factor to kitsch as you live out your dreams of becoming a scream queen, zombie, or kung fu fighter. Premiering exclusively on Xbox 360 this holiday season, it's the first and only game of its kind to transport players into a magical world of cinema mixed with the hilarious world of improvisation. Using the Xbox LIVE Vision camera, players' actions are captured and placed into short, riotous films that highlight the unique and often dubious acting talents of friends and family. Performances never end up on the cutting room floor and are never the same. With You're in the Movies, you're about to be a star - if only straight to DVD. Get ready for your close-up. [Microsoft]

You're in the Movies, will easily appeal to kids, but adults are sure to find this game just as entertaining.

If you’re willing to loosen up and act silly, the end product can be hilarious, especially if you completely ignore the “director’s” instructions.

If four players do a round of You're in the Movies, a round will take approx. 30 minutes of time. It is an entertaining game, but there are some technical problems concerning shadows, light and distance. Another problem is that the mini games get boring after a short time.

You’re in the Movies is a neat little party game; it offers plenty of fun in short bursts, however, don’t expect your guests to be amused for long periods of time as the movies and mini games are just slight variations of one another.

Playing mini-games and watching a movie featuring yourself and your friends is fun the first few times, but it wears off fast. The game does a good job of including everyone and providing a fun time, and the Director's Mode extends its value, but if you already own the camera and get tired of party games easily, perhaps there isn't a good enough reason to jump into this purchase.

Playing alone is a tepid affair(even with create-a-clip Director Mode), and we would've liked meatier mini-games and more interactivity in general(waiting and watching are your primary actions), but this $70 package offers enough amusing antics and cheesy clips in it's four-player mode to warrant an audition at your next party or family gathering. As a family game with a really low barrier of entry this game is a reasonable success. It does a great job of involving everyone in the room, as a part of the scenery if not in a starring role. Hopefully this isn't a flash in the pan and is a sign of a more healthy supply of games using the 360's previously dusty camera peripheral.

There are neat ideas at work, but ultimately, the premise and structure of You're In The Movies is a little too thin to recommend. If you're going to be getting a rowdy group together, and you're patient enough to get the camera working, it can make for a fun evening or two. But the thrills don't last.

The whole production’s chintzy Hollywood feel is just right, and there’s plenty to keep its target audience entertained. [Jan 2009, p.90]

You're in the movies is probably that type of game you only bring out at parties.

A brilliant bit of fun for an hour or two. [Feb 2009, p.86]

You’re in the Movies is largely a technological failure, making the game impossible to play at times. It’s fun to participate in the different minigames for a while, but the only reward is a minute-long trailer that is way too short to include enough images from the efforts everyone’s made during playing.

But Movies is a videogame, not an acting studio; it's the game parts that wear thin, becoming more tedious than fun. Ultimately, Movies is that type of game you only bring out at parties, and even then, your guests will probably ask to play Rock Band or Guitar Hero instead.

Although this will amuse to begin with, it won’t be long before you wish you had saved your cash for something else.

I know there was good intent that went into the making of the game, but, in all honesty, it turned out to be a very glitchy mess.

Yes, there are 30 B-movie scenarios, and plenty of mini-games, but the game isn't structured well enough to keep everyone interested and the end results aren't worth the effort.

A worthy idea but one that just isn’t deep enough to sustain the experience. After one playthrough you’ll feel as if you’ve seen all there is to see and you’d be right.

Despite some great presentation and a number of nice touches, it's ultimately extremely hard to recommend You're in the Movies to anyone.

You're in the Movies is a box-office bust, despite featuring your own recognizable stars.

The pacing is bad, the activities are boring, the Vision Camera is an annoyance and handcuffs the entire experience, and the payoff for all of your hardships isn’t fulfilling in the slightest.

People don't live in movie studios. They live in houses and flats that are lit for comfort, not to fulfill the technical requirements of an aging webcam. If you really want to put yourself and your friends on the TV, leave this failed experiment on the shelf, and put the money towards a digital camcorder instead.

Manda Johnson gave it a10:
This game is hilarious and loads of fun. If all you want to use your xbox for is the latest shooter - move along, you probably won't enjoy it. If you love having fun, acting silly, being a dork and involving your friends - it's a RIOT!
NasserInASaucer gave it a0:
Frankly, this game got nothing right. Better own a green screen if you want it to work at all. Even if it did work perfectly, the game is so obnoxious that you cannot stand to play it after just a little bit. You don't get bored, you get annoyed with the game. My little brother and sister couldn't stand the game. We played the game for a total of 20 minutes before we packed it up and traded it in online. I got this free with a bundle, and to be perfectly honest, it wasn't worth it. Worst game ever.
D B gave it a6:
Games shows promise but fails to deliver in the end. My 11 and 5 year old love it... Game is missing the ability to re-do a take if you know that you messed it up. Lighting is tricky to get right.
James E. gave it a9:
Great game! Fun with friends and family, especially after a few drinks! The only hassle is setting up the camera but once done its fine. Even had my mum up playing and that's very rare!
Marc S. gave it a10:
The best party game ever mad for 360! Yes, the pace could have been better and slightly higher, but this doesn't spoil the fun! An absolute must-buy if you have friends. Apparently the reviewers don't.... LOL.
Chris D. gave it a10:
Awesome fun! If you like cheesy movies and party games with the mates, you'd love this!
