To paraphrase Wooderson, Matthew McConaughey's character from "Dazed and Confused": "Racing games keep getting better; Auto Modellista just stays the same." [Apr 2004, p.106]

Team Xbox
For players with Xbox Live, the game has even more depth to offer. However, the incredibly tough controls as well as the unforgiving gameplay are sure to drive away many players.

The curse of Japanese racer audio lives on in Auto Modellista. The announcer needs a good punch in the face.

Get someone in there who can fix the damn control.

Official Xbox Magazine
While the game deserves kudos for its trippy and 'toon-y visual style, the hard reality is there's no compelling reason to give up the 800-pound gorilla that is "PGR2" to adapt to Auto Modellista's driftacular controls, especially since the game's Xbox Live implementation is fairly bareboned. Kee-rash.[Apr 2004, p.80]

Gaming Age
The Xbox Live function is easy to use, but good luck finding a crew to race. Several log-on attempts revealed that not too many people are logging into the AM races.

I suggest the title of Auto Modellista be changed to "Auto Modellista: On Ice," since all the cars react as though they're being driven on a skating rink.

The physics are terrible, the sound will drive you mad (if you listen to the announcer) or put you to sleep (if you listen to most of the music) and the Live feature is deplorably laughable.

The cel-shaded visual presentation is about the only element AM has going for it, so if you're really attracted to this particular aesthetic, then this is your game. On the other hand, if you're into racing games, chances are you already own something like "Need for Speed Underground," and AM really isn't even in the same ballpark.

The gameplay's been tweaked but not really improved, and the game doesn't have a single aspect that propels it into the competition. This Auto's out of gas.

Once this one slides off the road into the ditch, you might just want to leave it there.

Xbox Nation Magazine
It's quirky...it's garish...it's horribly annoying...The control is so utterly broken that one has to wonder what the developers were thinking. [Apr 2004, p.87]

Bob M. gave it a9:
My favorite racing game tied with the gran turismo games. if you enjoy tuning up foreign cars this is for you. the graphics are great and the game is different I guess you like it or you dont.

Steve D. gave it an 8:
Oh my GOD, this game has the worst control scheme ever! Why, I actually have to *slow down before I turn*! Please. Modellista is a rather good racing game with a strong sense of style, and a great title for Ridge Racer and Initial D fans without a PS2. If you're looking for a decent online racer - either post-PGR2 or pre-GT4, this should fit the bill nicely. The only downer is that AM is a fairly straight port, with nothing much to offer to those who've played it on the PS2. But then again, drift-centric racers are few and far between on the Xbox to begin with. Oh... and if you're having a hard time with the controls, try slowing down *before* you're halfway in to the corner. That sissy Gran Turismo 2 'braking halfway in to the corner' nonsense causes cars to skid uncontrollably in real life... and in this game too. How about that?
