Summary

The book by Mario Puzo and classic film by Paramount Pictures serve as inspiration for The Godfather, as gamers join the Corleone family and earn respect through loyalty and fear as they rise through the ranks to become Don in a living 1945-1955 New York. Gamers create their own mob character in the game, putting themselves into the action while reliving classic moments from the fiction and experiencing original missions alongside memorable characters from the film. After a life of small-time jobs and petty thefts the player is accepted into the Corleone family, America's most famous criminal organization. It is up to the player to carry out orders, earn respect and make New York City their own. Featuring non-linear action-adventure gameplay, The Godfather offers gamers countless choices for solving the family’s problems with brutal violence, skillful diplomacy, or a cunning mixture of both. From mob hits and bank heists to drive-bys and extortion, step deep inside the world of The Godfather where intimidation and negotiation are your tickets to the top. Players use their powers of loyalty and fear to earn respect through interactions with characters in the world. Decisions made by the player in the game have lasting consequences, just as it was in the mob underworld featured in The Godfather fiction. James Caan, Robert Duvall, and the late Marlon Brando provided voice acting and likenesses for the game. [Electronic Arts]

Whether through it's trademark music or unique take on the film's plot, The Godfather does something that licensed video games have tried and failed to accomplish in the past - give gamers a good time and an experience worthy of the film it's emulating.

The Godfather is not a perfect game but it's a hell of a lot of fun. There's nothing particularly frustrating about it so the challenges won't be insurmountable to casual gamers. Hardcores can immerse themselves in the mob world and enjoy the game as an interactive movie.

In many ways, The Godfather is much better than "GTA". The producers have taken the "GTA" gameplay concept as a starting point and then made it their own by surrounding it with a well-established storyline that gives everything purpose and charm.

Instead of walking you through a calmly paced, occasionally tense New York from the film, you’ll have all sorts of ways to smash and crash your way through this game.

The actual hand to hand (or baseball bat to hand) combat is excellent too; targeting in the same way, you use both thumbsticks to combat your opponent, one for moving you or your opponent, you can throw or ram your foe into the wall with this stick too - and the other stick is generally for hitting them. Use both together for best results!

The camera is the root of my problems with the game. Everything else adds up to a fun ride and a nice homage to the film. It isn't perfect, but it is an enjoyable game, and it even pushes the sandbox genre forward a bit by moving the focus away from just mayhem.

Yes, it’s a blatant rip-off of Grand Theft Auto. So were a lot of other games – but at least The Godfather is a good rip-off of the genre setter, unlike some embarrassingly awful games (the putrid "Driver 3" and equally dreadful "25 to Life" come to mind).

I’ve come away impressed. It has its flaws: inconsistent AI, lack of fast transit, and lack of in-game character customization, but at the core this is a very good game. The license is used beautifully. I’ll go as far as to say that this is the best implementation of a movie license to date.

The depth of The Godfather while you rise through the ranks is incredible...What EA did well is incorporating the Godfather story line along with yours, versus having you control one of the main characters. This opens up the gameplay immensely and allows you to unfold the Godfather story at your own pace.

Starts off strong with fun missions that follow the story of the movies nicely. However, towards the end the quality and amount of plot-related missions goes down and the optional missions start to repeat themselves. It is still a fun GTA clone, just not what it could have been. [April 2006]

As clones go, The Godfather is one of the better ones. It's got a unique atmosphere all of its own, due largely to the quality period setting, and manages to stay faithful to the film while carving out some interesting takes on classic scenes. [April 2006, p.80]

Worth Playing

The fact of the matter is that Godfather is a good game, but only if you can keep in mind that it's really a game, instead of a well-adapted license. The game's attempt to create a vast, thriving city is undercut by a lack of variety. The Godfather's New York apparently has only a single architect: when you've seen one nightclub or butcher shop, you know how all the others will look. And while the game focuses heavily on driving, there are only seven models of cars.

The game itself is an uneven mishmash of fighting, driving, and shooting. Call it Grand Theft Goodfellas; if someone took Rockstar Games' popular Grand Theft Auto series, moved its setting to New York, and then sent it via the Wayback machine to post-World War II New York, the result would be The Godfather.

A huge, lazy and sometimes glitchy disappointment of a game. The character progression really doesn’t provide a strong enough excuse to keep playing after the initial joy of the combat has dissipated, and the number of times you find yourself going through the same old motions during missions smacks of padding of a magnitude normally associated with the corpulent Don.

C. Lawrence gave it a7:
Satisfying rental, probably not worth purchasing though, I'm guessing it will only be amusing for a week or so.

Daniel X. gave it an8:
This game definately has it's memorable moments. Whether I was planting the gun for Michael Corleone to find, taking my first warehouse, or killing all 4 rival dons in one mission, this game was a blast to play. The flaws in this game are few, but have a big impact on the game. For starters, there was only like 12 missions, after that there was really no structure left to follow. So after completing these missions in about an hour or two, i was left to take out businesses for the remainder of the game. After about the tenth hour of this it gets to be numbingly repetitive. Another flaw is the insane easiness of the actual game. I think i died maybe 5 or 6 times throughout the entire game. The graphics are excellent, but are hurt by the fact that there are maybe 5 cars in the game and 10 different models of people. Now enough of the bashing. This game features some of the most entertaining videos and plots i have ever experienced. From the opening scene where my father is murdered, I was completely enthralled in this game. I actually experienced pride in my role for the Corleone family. I was willing to fight and die for the family. It was a great game that should be played for years.

Alex D. gave it a9:
Really swell game, the graphics are simply amazing and every item, every car is filled with unbelieveble realistic details. The thing I like bout this game is that you can create your own character`s facial expressions and hair. Another thing is, when all your stats are actually high, the game gets a whole lot better and easier. You can rob banks, steal shops, restaurants and many more... The one thing I don`t like about this game is that there is only four kinds of car and the fastest ones are only in midtown and brooklyn. Otherwise, the game is very good and deserves to stay on the shelves for a while...

Nikk H. gave it a10:
Ok, either im missing somthing, or you guys havent played the game. It is very much like grand theft auto, but much better. It is set in the 30s, with the godfather, i mean, with the fun of wacking a guy, or just chasing down supply trucks( my favorite) what more do you need? But, it is a difficult, way to difficult to take out a warehouse, so dont try unless you are willy to be frustrated.

Nick G. gave it a9:
Very very fun game. I had a great time. similar to GTA san andreas, but id have to say...Better! I gave it a 9 instead of a 10 because some parts of the game are too challenging, like taking over a ware house is unbelivably hard, but otherwise, an amzing game.

Eiffel gave it an8:
I actually was quite surprised by this as I enjoy it more than I thought I would. It's not perfect, but it is a fun game to play, with some nice elements. Pulling off bank heists, lots of different assination & execution moves, and the missions which do tie in extremely well with the movie, are all well thought out. The controls are responsive and work well (throwing someone through an open window, leaping out and pulling an execution move is always enjoyable :). Graphically the game looks good, from the small things such as the pigeons to the large explosions when you blow up businesses. There are a few things that could have been done better though, such as having to exit the game to visit the tailors or barbers (this could have been so much better by doing this in a shop), and the fact that certain building layouts are all the same, meaning that you know exactly where the guy is that you need to buyout. Just adding a random spawn to the guys location would have been much better. The map is good with lots to do, but is about the same size as Vice City. In conclusion it's an enjoyable game (I have yet to get frustrated with it), and based on this I would buy the sequel.

[Anonymous] gave it a9:
It's got a lot more great moments than flaws, on the whole it's a lot of fun. You don't get much of the flavor until you've played a few hours, I suggest keeping at it if you've just started.
