Summary

Set in the untamed West of the late-1800s, GUN is a free-roaming action-adventure game that takes players to a world without laws where greed, lust and murder are rampant. As Colton White, a vengeful gunslinger, players must straddle the line between good and evil as they showdown against corrupt lawmen, a murderous preacher, renegade army psychopaths, merciless outlaws and unforgiving Native Americans, while waging war on horseback, collecting bounties, and commandeering trains. Players travel through an action-packed landscape of high mountain wilderness, deserts and bustling territorial towns in an epic story of betrayal, greed, and revenge. Multiple gameplay styles include: strategic gunplay and precision shooting, stealth tactics, and use of explosives. Embark on numerous side missions to master gun slinging and horse riding. Players can unlock secret weapons and upgrade skills and abilities to improve their weapon and equipment performance. [Activision]

Gun is such a rich, panoramic story, chock-full of sneering bad guys, shoot-outs, can-can girls and jailbreaks, you'll wonder why no one ever thought of it before. [Official UK Xbox Magazine]

The only drawbacks to GUN are the short story mode; the main campaign can be completed in less than six hours, and the extremely frustrating final boss.

If there's a nit to pick with Gun, it's that it's short. Depending on how much you poke around, you can beat it in anywhere from six to ten hours. To us, that's no problem; we'll take a short amazing game over a long lackluster one any day.

To get the full effect of Gun, the side missions are a must as the game can be ripped through rather quickly without them. Take your time, enjoy the experience and story, and you’ll be glad you did.

You're treated to an interesting plot, fun, sandbox-style gameplay, and atmosphere thick enough to choke a horse. It's honestly one of the most fun titles out there, and occasionally so over-the-top as to be downright hilarious.

Makes no excuses in its brutal retelling of a classic western story. The atmosphere of the gunfights is expertly created. GTA style free-roaming world fits the game well, and overall it is a magnificently fun, if a bit short, experience. [Dec 2005]

Gun surrounds you with characters and a story that put their own stamp on the genre and make you a participant in a grand adventure that stands up to the rich tales of the legendary west. [Dec 2005, p.150]

One of the best action games to come along in recent memory. It’s unfortunate that the experience ends so quickly, but few games twice as long leave behind such a lasting impression as remains after completing this adventure in the Old West.

A no-holds-barred, straight up western that certainly deserves a good look. The major flaw is how quick it is to finish and how easy it is to complete 100% of the tasks the game has to offer.

What it does lack is a good multiplayer element. That makes the game seem "done" once you beat it. It isn't a short game to beat, but after you're done there's no online play to make you go back to it.

The interesting thing about Gun, however, is that it mixes broad free-roaming aspects with some of the most tightly scripted missions we've seen in any game -- quite an achievement for an original game from a company known for skateboarding titles.

One the one hand you've got a rich and compelling narrative, a twitch-happy gun mechanic, and a big landscape in which to explore. On the other hand, the controls are loose and a little sloppy, the targeting perimeter around each character is way too big and forgiving, so it's easy to be a bad shooter, and the vast landscape doesn't have much in it.

The experience just doesn't last long enough to be savored. Gun's main story missions are exciting, but the main plot is over so quickly that the whole thing just ends up feeling rushed, and the various side missions aren't compelling enough to hold your interest after the end credits roll.

The majority of the game is one long gunfight, shifting between a traditional free-looking aim to lock-on, slow-mo shooting. It's good stuff, if you don't mind your foes acting like targets in a carnival game.

You'll enjoy the gunplay, you'll probably be numbed by the slo-mo gunplay repetition, and then see it through anyway because it's all quite undemanding fun with a decent story. On horseback. Just don't expect Gun to change the world. It really is just "True Crime in the Wild West."

If you want to compare GUN to GTA, it's fair to say that it doesn't reach the level of enjoyment found in the GTA games mainly because the missions push you forward a little too much and you don't get the chance to explore as much as you might want to do.

Constantine H. gave it a10:
This is a great game but I hope they make more western games. If you have played read dead revolver then you will like this game.It is a little bit short.I Have beaten the game a Like twice.Next I am going to play it on the psp.

Round Moon gave it an8:
It might not be an instant classic yet to this day I've never seen anything close to a wester movie like this game. The motion capture of animals, apaches and all in it is so realistic. The landscape gives you that western movie feeling, a sense of vast and freedom. An apache shot dropping dead from the side of his horse in slow motion during a quick draw shot it is a joy to see. There is much to value in the care taken to details. Can be improved for sure. There is no much strategy and it is pretty much straight forward and easy. On the other it is simply something fresh and new, well executed, unless u really hate western movies.

[Anonymous] gave it a7:
Overall a pretty fun game. Kept my interest from beginning to end. Interesting characters and a pretty good storyline. Graphics where above average. Major complaint was that the game was too short and I usually don't mind that, but this is the shortest game i have played to date. There are several side missions you can do to extend the game, but most are uninspired and repetative. Also I found the enemy AI pretty predicatable and the Native yelling tiresome. Worth buying used (probably could rent it as I easily finished it in a week).

IamNlCK gave it a7:
The best thing about this game is the originality...A Clint Eastwood type western shooter. I can only think of one other western Ive played. It starts off being a lot of fun, with an interesting story, with easy to learn controls. After midpoint though, it starts to lose most of its charm and the missions become a little monotonous and chore-like. Overall though, a game worth buying from the discount bin.

Josh gave it a6:
Good graphics and voice acting. Too short and the game wasn't challenging enough.

Pete W. gave it an8:
Why has no-one thought of this before? Pretty much every boy/man wants to be a cowboy and this brings you vitrually close! It is a bit like GTA in terms of the format, but although lacking some the intricacies, depth and indeed length that made GTA truly great, that's not to say that it is not a great game and to be honest i enjoyed the gunplay more than that of GTA as it has a far superior aiming and shooting system. There's no feeling like wiping out three attacking bandits with your quickdraw without flinching - Clint style(manually aimed i might add - didn't use the autotarget/switching). I also think the horse control is spot on. The realism in movement is fantastic. If they'd put a bit more more detail in it, for me, it would blow GTA away! But then i'm just a sucker for westerns.

Cory K. gave it a9:
Neversoft's first non TH game is a success.....it successfully mixed the open ended gameplay of GTA with a Western background complete with hunting animals, jail breaks and a compelling story....too bad it can all be beaten in less than 8 hours!
