Summary

On the war-torn, poisoned atmosphere of Nu Earth, Rogue Trooper is a genetic infantryman, one of an elite squad of biologically-engineered clone troops, created to overcome the planet's hostile atmosphere, unhindered in their fight against the enemy, the Nort Republic. After witnessing the betrayal and annihilation of his squad at the Quartz Zone Massacre, Rogue has gone AWOL, determined to hunt down the traitor who sent his brothers-in-arms to their deaths. Armed with the latest experimental weapons, Rogue's arsenal offers him a critical advantage over his opponents; encoded bio-chips containing the digitised personalities of his fallen comrades are stored in his gun, helmet and backpack, each offering their unique expertise and assistance, allowing Rogue to strategically outwit a sophisticated enemy. The game is a mix of intense 3rd person action and next generation stealth elements, with complex line-of-sight AI, multiple game paths, full tactical use of your bio-chip operated equipment and both single- and multiplayer online gameplay. Game Chronicles

There is just so much original thinking that went into this design, and it really forces you to strategize and play in whole new ways. Each encounter in the game is a new chance to plan some crafty tactics or just go in guns blazing. Rogue Trooper is a fantastic action experience and gets my highest recommendation for being added to your permanent game library.

This is solidly built, quality gaming, made by a team that's put a lot of care into adapting the license. [June 2006, p.62]

While it doesn't innovate in any one particular area, it keeps the action fresh by giving the player a ton of flexibility.

It's amazing when you sit down with a game that you had the lowest of expectations for, only to find an incredibly well put together experience.

It's a decent adventure game that has some really interesting ideas on gameplay. It may be a tad too short, but there is some fun to be had while playing.

Another impressive example of Rogue Trooper’s AI is clearly and believably evident in the fact that very seldom can the player pull off a long range sniper shot without being shot at in turn.

Rogue Trooper has some brilliance behind it. The game is exciting, fun to play, and it encourages multiple ways of taking out your enemies.

An excellent, fast paced shooter but because it launched so late in the life of the current-gen consoles, it is more likely that gamers will pick up a new 360 game or save for future PS3/Wii fare.

Next Level Gaming

Just sort of middle-of-the-road when it comes to 3rd person shooters. The main reason is the cookie-cutter AI that seems to sort of makes the game a little too easy to play.

Rogue Trooper doesn't approach the inventiveness of a great budget TPS like last year's "Raze's Hell," but it's priced to move.

Rogue Trooper, I thank you for the important lesson you've taught me about judging a game by its cover art: That's now onlt accurate 99% of the time. [June 2006, p.111]

Game Informer

The co-op gameplay is a nice touch, but not enough to overcome the bland graphics and familiarity that permeates every second of gameplay. [June 2006, p.112]

70

Edge Magazine

This thirdperson actioner spikes the familiar with flavour, and a tired but reliable vocabulary of wall-hugs, circle-strafe, grenade lobs and headshots with an invigorating Nu-Earth twang. [June 2006, p.94]

There is something oddly reassuring about a game that keeps its horizons narrow to get the job done well... A fun, smart and refreshingly uncomplicated experience. [June 2006, p.112]

The graphics are functional when it comes to the large playing areas but exemplary when it comes to the rather bone-crunching despatching of the opposition.

A strong sense of style that stays close to the source material, Rogue Trooper isn't just one for the fans however; an intensive and sometimes intelligent shooter, Rogue Trooper is certainly one that could interest you if you're looking for a shooter that's a little bit different to the usual.

Warts and all, Rogue Trooper's a perfectly decent rip, and as comic-book tie-ins go, it's better than most. [July 2006, p.82]

A decent enough shooter, with good weapons and a decent cover system - but only fans of the comic will get the most from it. [June 2006, p.78]

For a budget title, things could certainly be a whole lot worse. It’s worth a rental at the least, and if you can find some online play then you might just want to consider purchasing it. It’s fun, challenging, captivating, diverse – and cheap.

Xbox World Australia

In a climate of next-gen gaming, Rogue Trooper comes across as an anachronistic ode to the Xbox third person shooter. Not exactly rough around the edges but then not entirely polished either, it's a game best suited for either rabid fans of the comic upon which it is based or those who simply must experience every game out there that lets you play with big guns.

The best thing you can say about Rogue Trooper is that (despite some clunky control decisions) is almost always good fun. Thanks to well-paced design you'll certainly never feel like downing the pad in abject frustration, or out of plain boredom: it's the gaming equivalent of popcorn sci-fi action movie fodder.

Elements such as stealth and stealth kills, blind firing, and the employment of cover in firefights add little to Trooper's mystique; they won't be used much as they slow down the pace to an almost unbearable crawl. [May 2006, p.53]

Where Rogue Trooper rescues itself from mediocrity, however, is in the way it utilises Gunnar, Helm and Bagman. They all perk up with humorous quips and helpful advice, while the futuristic gadgetry is inventive.

[Anonymous] gave it a9:
License source material done to perfection. Smooth, intuitive controls with excellent options for action and tactics (the sniper options are particularly excellent and popping the guy's air tank is particularly satisfying!). The opponents do their best to take you down too, so you've got to be on your toes at all times. The ONLy thing that stops this being a solid '10', is the linear plotline and the relatively short game play. Its so good you'll get to the end and cry out for more...

Ryan B. gave it a9:
Wow, don't miss the opportunity to own this great sleeper hit! I had never heard of Rogue Trooper before as a comic or game up until close to its release. I started tracking it and checking its website and watching gameplay videos of it. This game is a great action game, nice big levels with multiple paths to take as to either run and gun or sneak up on unsuspecting victims and perform great melee kills. It adds to the fact that my fav color is Blue. He is one tough trooper and its a total blast to play, and its a great deal. Hope they will make another one. Go get it now!

Mat L. gave it a10:
Excellent game worthy of the licence.

Jon M. gave it a9:
Great title, especially for a budget title. I'd highly recommend this one. Clean graphics, great gameplay, and excellent 5.1 surround. Far exceeded my expectations.

Sara gave it an8:
Played PS2 version - nicely intuitive controls and some great fun to be had with "bio-chip" features. Can be a bit easy but never frustrating.

Uwe P. gave it a10:
Not just a great adaption of the comic, but in its own right a fantastic third-person shooter that allows the player to be inventive and tackle each situation as he pleases. It stays challenging the whole way through thanks to the terrifyingly smart enemies (if you've played last year's Sniper Elite by the same developers, you'll see the same level of high quality AI here) and killing them is always satisfying thanks to some meaty weaponry. No doubt one of the best shooters for the Xbox in recent years.
