Summary
Taking the series in a new direction, apprehension and fear immediately run high when the new main character, Henry Townshend, finds himself trapped in his own cursed apartment. Only by exploring mysterious portals leading to disturbing alternate worlds will Henry begin to uncover clues as to why he is trapped. However, in true Silent Hill fashion, mysterious new characters, horrendous creatures, and the undead will use any means necessary to impede his progress. A tense atmosphere and grotesque enemies will get the player's heart thumping as Silent Hill 4 delivers a gameplay experience that fans and newcomers will never forget. Using state of the art technology, the development team has effectively created bone-chilling effects to add to the game's creepy atmosphere. Players will be able to see changes in environments over time, as the alternate world seeps into reality. In addition, Silent Hill 4 shifts between the first and third-person perspective, which is a first for the series. Beautifully detailed environments, a haunting soundtrack and the game's trademark psychological horror complete Silent Hill 4's overall fear factor as players travel between the room and their worst nightmare. Fans of horror games need to drop everything and pick up Silent Hill 4: The Room because aside from being the best in the series, this could be the best of the genre. About the only flaw that can be found is that Henry seems a bit too emotionless at times.

In my honest humble opinion Silent Hill 4: The Room is by far the best of the Silent Hill series.

A fun horror title with solid gameplay and an interesting storyline to keep you playing to the very end.

The clunky inventory and save system that forces you to return to your room is annoying at first but you eventually learn to live with it.

The pedestrian gameplay is overcome by the incredible visuals and audio. The story is also the best of all the SH games to date.

Be warned, however, that this game is not for the weak at heart. It will scare you. But like a good horror flick, you'll love every minute of it, especially without the usual stupid teenagers getting killed.

The large number of cut scenes seems a little distracting at first, but once you get used to them, they add a lot of depth to the game.

The game's disarming voyeurism, bizarre camera angles, and exceptionally well-placed tension is what the series has been trying to do all along, but The Room is the first entry to do it right. [Sept 2004, p.104]

While not all of the additional elements worked well, such as the awkward inventory limit, fans of the series and newcomers alike will still find much to appreciate and cower in terror about in the game.

While there were definitely some changes to the game that I didn’t care much for, such as the lack of radio/flashlight combo, perhaps the alterations were a good thing for the series overall.

Dedicated followers of the Silent Hill mythology will find plenty to sink their teeth into with a solid eight-hour adventure and multiple endings, and the new “Room” mechanics and intriguing plot might even snare a few newcomers.

It's the details that we love in this game...Graphics are wonderful, too...Just dont play it in the dark.

The Room is a frightening and disturbing jaunt even with its number of flaws you’ll encounter along the way, but it is definitely a jaunt well worth taking.

The bizarre levels and challenging puzzles remain engrossing even when you start asking the never-answered question, “What’s the point?”

The Room is definitely smaller and more sparsely appointed digs than its predecessors... but it's still in one hell of a neighborhood.

Even though the dialogue is pretty well-written, the game’s voice actors deliver a rather wooden performance that will have most audiences rolling their eyes and wishing for more monsters to kill.

Worth at least a rental, since the game can easily be beaten the first time through in twelve or less hours.

The eeriness of the environments, even your room feels dingy, is captured brilliantly, and the tunnel effect is awesome.

Even with a new action-oriented emphasis, the game's targetting system, spotty collision detection, and lead-footed "companion" in the game's second half means it doesn't exactly handle like a dream. [Oct 2004, p.72]
IGN
Neither brilliant nor terrible. Instead, it falls into that weird ether world of limbo, a game that's good in parts and weak in others, leaving you with a feeling of only mild satisfaction. It's like waking up with a great hunger to a plate of luke-warm eggs.

More disturbing than seeing a clown in your infant years, Silent Hill 4: The Room is the best of the series to date and if you have the guts then it's definitely worth a look.

It's telling that even when Silent Hill isn't at its best, it's still better than most of the competition, and both parts of that sentence are true about The Room.

Overall I enjoyed Silent Hill 4 just as much as the previous games. Although the initially slower pace and more non-conventional puzzles might annoy some gamers, those who hang in there are in for a hellish treat well worthy of the creepy Silent Hill brand.

Unlike Hollywood horror movies that often get worse with each new sequel ("Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan," for example), Konami's scary Silent Hill series gets better -- and creepier -- with age.

Other than the different endings and the way the difficulty levels affect the puzzles and combat, the only difference on a reply are the addition of some hidden items.

Its well implemented concepts of both first person and third person perspectives and its centralisation between an apartment and an alternative world offer a rare kind of gameplay experience.

Pairs third-person and new first-person gameplay with an emphasis on combat and item management. The resultant hybrid has some flaws, but The Room retains the dark, disturbing soul that is the unsettling center of the Silent Hill experience.

It also introduces a cerebral angle to a genre that's left little to the imagination and makes it all the more unnerving as the hell on the other side of the hole in your wall closes in. [Oct 2004, p.96]
Game Revolution
Unsurprisingly, the Xbox version is a bit cleaner and sharper than the PS2 and has some more detailed textures. It’s a noticeable difference, but not a big deal.

A rather slow game, which gets incredibly fast with bad camera angles at unexpected times.

Veterans can complete this in one sitting of 4-8 hours if so inclined. Even with all the monotonous backtracking and escort missions, the game is far too short. The downside is comparable to seeing a great horror flick that is only 80 minutes long.

Because of the rather boring combat system, it’s a sad fact that Silent Hill 4 really isn’t all that scary.

A damned scary game, and it's one of the better survival horror titles out there because of that. It's good to see its designers taking risks and experimenting with the formula. This time, however, it's kind of a misfire. It's by no means a failure, but it's not a success, either.

We just can't get that excited about Konami's latest venture. Maybe it's the annoying plot twist that happens halfway through the game - think "Ico" with a plaster cast - that essentially forces you to replay through all the frightening locations you've already visited.

The stellar visuals and spot-on sound design keep these from being too terribly dull, but clumsy combat and woeful repetition will try your patience.

The game is too bright. Previous titles used the darkness to instill a mood and sense of horror in things you couldn't see. This time around, you can see everything, even in the distance.

The first-person view allows only for awkward movement and exploration, with Townshend forced to turn to alter his view. Invincible ghosts prove to be perpetually frustrating, especially in tight spots.
It's the weakest of the series by a long way, and an ill-judged attempt to drag a narrative driven adventure game into the realms of sub hackandslash by removing much of the actual thinking and forcing the player to engage in less than challenging puzzles while foisting repetitive and unengaging combat upon them.

Silent Hill 4 is by far the most atmospheric of the titles to date, and if played under the right conditions will creep out even the most hardened survival horror fan. But being made to traipse over the same levels a second time seems a little lazy and really saps a lot of enjoyment out of the experience. [Sept 2004, p.113]
Edge Magazine
Look at it one way, and it's a choking journey with unprecedented attention to unease and psychological horror, a game framed with unparalleled sophistication. From another angle, it's just a clunky PSone throwback, with all the design wit of a dodo. [Aug 2004, p.92]
Gaming Horizon
Silent Hill 4 may look pretty on the surface, but after an hour or so you’ll have found out that like most pretty things, what’s beneath can be pretty disappointing.

Fans of the series will have plenty to be happy about, but you can’t help feeling you’ve been here and done that in the previous games. That’s the real horror here.

Adam N gave it a3:
Its got ok graphics, and it can be a challenge but it is not scary...at all! To sum it up BOOO, are you scared, because if you are that is how scary the game is!
Rick gave it a3:
I urge all of you to read this post. Don't buy this game, dont even rent it. One of the worst, most boring, clunky, ugly control scheme, slow paced, been done before games I have ever played. On par with the terrible Star Trek Shattered Union as one of the worst games Ive played on the box. Gave it a couple of (yaaaaawwwn) hours before giving it back to my mate in disgust. Hahaha sucker he should read reviews first.
Jesse S. gave it a7:
A fair game. The graphics are simply amazing, thats one of the main things this game has going for it. The character models are lifelike, and the environments are lush and vivid. The gameplay goes in a few new directions for Silent Hill, but can all of the backtracking can be extremely tiring. Sound is just as great as it is in any Silent Hill game. A good game for fans of the series, but definitley not one to introduce you to Silent Hill. Konami had a great idea in mind, and they were close to executing it correctly, but there are some flaws that take away from the experience.
Jay gave it an8:
Silent Hill would never win any awards for its gameplay, its way too linear, frustrating at times and the whole inventory thing is crapola. But for once this is a series that can have all those problems and still be on top of all others in the same genre. It is the sinister atmosphere, the unnerving sounds, and the overall feeling the player has towards the situation they have been put in that makes this series a winner. True there are no jumpy, heart-in-your-mouth moments because thrills like that only last a few minutes. This series plays with your emotions sinking you gradually into a feeling of absolute remorse, which effectively can keep you feeling creeped for some time. Silent Hill 4 has expanded on this and made it much much better. Making it more personal as the problem arises in your own home and eventually reaching a point where your home is no different to the chilling alternate worlds you are forced to explore. The graphics are not great but in my opinion this only adds to the whole gritty dark nature that the game is themed. So for overall scare factor, fantastic disturbing atmosphere, great story and heart stopping sound effects I gave Silent Hill 4: The Room an 8. Improve the actual gameplay and you'll have one of the most superb games ever created of its genre.
Danwise G. gave it a 4:
I have never really thought the silent hill series was scary. This game is no exception. The sound can go from creepy sound effects to why is this music in this game and does this music actually go with the scene? The graphics are bland for xbox standards. Every level is a dark, fuzzy, hazy, mess. If this game had been released 2 years ago it might look good but at times it looks like the first resident evil for the playstation. The cut scenes are good but are destoryed by the cheesy music and the strange story. The gameplay is terriable. You are running around with whatever weapon you're using and it just feels like the resident evil frachise but even more flustrating. Also the stupid store your item in a box thing has reappeared and you will often be making trips back to your apartment for items you need not to mention the lack of health healing items on EASY. The worst part of this game is babysitting your neighbor for half of the game as she and her stupid AI runs into your weapon or right into the enemies. The combat is weak and you never feel really at danger, the enemies are stupid at best, the resurecting ghosts are annoying; about the only redeeming quality of this game is the first person perspective in your apartment where you actually sometimes feel like you are in a world that's alive if not for the repeating scenes you see out your windows or in your neighbor's apartment. The story is strange and doesn't seem to be really at all interesting. Thankfully this version of silent hill has a story that makes a little sense but still leaves your head scratching. The multiple endings is a good idea but I didn't see any ending that was really that interesting. Why would you want to replay a game that's very little fun to play in the first place? This game is a rental unless you can make it through the bad gameplay elements, it might be a good game to buy. But be warned you might not want to replay this horror flick. For it's crappy gameplay, story, music, and graphics I give this one a 4 out of 10
Ben D. gave it a 10:
This game is the best horror game ever made.
Uter gave it a 6:
Bas is correct, the melee combat is garbage. It truly is slow, unresponsive, and just plain frustrating. What makes this game decent is it's atmosphere, and crazy story.
