Summary

Prove yourself as the greatest golfer of all time by taking on the legends in the prime of their careers -- on their terms. Do you have what it takes to beat Jack Nicklaus in his heyday with a bag full of wooden clubs or Tiger Woods with his modern-day equipment? For the first time, both analog sticks control each shot from tee to green. The left analog stick controls your swing, and the right analog Shape Stick dictates ball trajectory and putt strength. Back your challenges with wagers before any shot or round. Bigger odds are given to special accomplishments, so reap the largest rewards for nailing the toughest shots. Experience 15 beautifully detailed courses including Pebble Beach Golf Links, St Andrews, Reflection Bay, Doral Golf Resort, and more as you play as or against Tiger Woods and 16 other PGA TOUR players, including the newly added Chris DiMarco, Mike Weir, Ian Poulter, and Luke Donald. New Gamebreaker Meter: Build confidence to trigger Gamebreaker situations, and boost your power and accuracy by making great shots and posting low scores. [Electronic Arts]

Other than the sound, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 does everything needed to help give the franchise a breath of fresh air. It’s nice to see that EA Sports can do more than just throw in one new play or change one part of a game.

It looks and sounds better than ever, with a host of real and fantasy modes and characters, a mix that offers a lot of variety for both casual and hardcore gamers. As always, it's a game that's easy to pick up and very difficult to put down.

Stuff

This year's Tiger feels more complex and sophisticated than ever. Putting is more challenging (e.g., total bitch)... Yet, the game is still accessible to armchair golfers, thanks to those welcome arcade-y touches.

While it offers some nice additions to an already winning franchise, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 is the first game in the series that doesn't fully deliver the goods. One can't help but feel like the series needs a shot in the arm to get players excited again.

It's taken its sweet time getting here, but as an online game this is perfect stuff: easy to pick up, difficult to master and immensely satisfying to beat your rivals at. [Official UK Xbox Magazine]

Next Level Gaming

Easily the best golf game to date on a console. The gameplay is solid and has been refined over the years. The course selection is great, and the Tiger Proofing adds more to those courses.

Armchair Empire

It won’t appeal as much to fans of the Mario Golf/Outlaw Golf/Hot Shots arcade-style golf game, but if you’re looking to play “real” golf on a console, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 clubs the competition off the tee.

While there aren't necessarily any revolutionary additions, this is a finely polished game that will please golf fanatics and casual gamers alike.

The game suffers from a baffingly stupid and fundamental flaw that puts a crimp in all that style: Season Mode and Rivals Mode have no difficulty levels. [Nov 2005, p.120]

PGA Tour 06 had our eyes wide with awe and we're pretty sure you'll react the same way.

There are things to nitpick, but as a whole, the game is excellent and a joy to play. It is steeping with realism and challenge.

So, the mechanics feel better and I recommend it for fans of the series who have to get their fix every year. However, if you're looking for something new, you may want to hold off to see if EA makes a bigger leap with the next generation or next year's version.

It's not a revolution, but it's an improvement. [Nov 2005, p.140]

Visuals are just as refined and gorgeous as previous versions of the series, with new and subtle differences added to give the game increased flare and a more appealing look to the eye.

With the addition of rivals mode, gamebreaker, and the advent of the shape stick there’s enough to keep players occupied at least until the release of the Xbox 360 despite some of the visual shortcomings of the game.

Electronic Gaming Monthly

For years I've been saying that the only significant problem with the Tiger games is the putting interface. So what did they do this year? They made putting harder by removing caddy tips and employing the same analog swing interface as tee shots.

What remains to be seen is whether EA can reintroduce a suitable element of difficulty to knock the series back in the right direction without forcing an unintentional bogie.

You will find success early and often in Tiger 06, and though that may not sound like such a bad thing, it isn't necessarily true to the spirit of the sport, where triumphs--however minor--need to be earned, not simply offered to you for the taking.

Minus points for adding a golf Gamebreaker, and Xbox custom soundtrack support for in-game play would have been nice.

A great game, but telling you this is a must have title is just silly. While the game is extremely well done, there is just not enough here to warrant adding another Tiger game to your collection.

Despite the knocks against rivals mode and the fact that the new controls are mostly borrowed from what many consider to be a more simple golf franchise, Tiger Woods 06 is still a solid game. Where rivals fails, the more realistic PGA Tour mode is still fun, as is skills 18, a set of target-based minigames.

Game Revolution

This year they tried to futz with the gameplay, but the changes are so minute that most veterans will seamlessly transition from last year’s game to this one. Whether or not it’s worth the green fees depends a great deal on your love of the game, but chances are you’ve already aced this course.

If EA wants people to buy these games year in, year out, then it has to fight for those high marks, and Tiger Woods doesn't know how to do that any more.

A couple of its core additions, namely its "shape stick" and its other glaring issues, bring it up short. That's not to say you won't have fun with it, though. Rivals Mode is more than worth the price of admission.

I'm surprised and saddened that this was outdone by a two-year-old game. EA's trying some new things here, but they don't quite work yet.

And so, we come to the conclusion, and that conclusion is a sad one: stick with Links 2004, Hotshots Golf 3, Hotshots Golf Fore!, or even Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005. At least those games had rewarding gameplay.

Mark S. gave it a3:
This series has ran its course, far too easy just boring.

Mike gave it a2:
I'm done with EA.....this game is way too easy. Has EA ever heard of creativity? I'm more and more convinced that they are simply a business and really have 0 passion for video games. Did I mention the game was easy? Have fun playing the same boring courses over and over and consistently getting -20 every round or some ridiculous score. This is the last...and I mean last EA sports title I ever buy. Nuff said.

Harry A. gave it a9:
Tiger playing on Xbox LIVE in Europe! Few new course. Brilliant.

Scotty P gave it a2:
EA drops the ball on another '06 game. The graphics are only mildly improved, but seem fuzzier. Not everyone has an HD TV. You can't skip cut scenes, the putting is insanely easy, the commentary quite often has nothing to do with what just happened, the shot caller feature is missing basic things such as long drive and closest to the pin, the menus are clunky, and the selection of equipment seems much worse. Anyone who has actually played a real round of Golf knows that putts are not automatic and shots don't always go straight. EA has created this odd in between area where the game isn't quite arcade and it isn't quite sim. What does this mean? It means it is quite boring. There is very little sense of accomplishment to anything. '03 remains the best version yet. Even last years '05 was far more fun than this years version.

Chris M. gave it a0:
EA dropped the ball, the game is worse than ever, you can't fast forward the some of the cut scenes, graphics are the same, menus look way worse, characters are more annoying. The only way to play this game and not shoot under par is to turn off power boost, turn off the spin button, and max out all the tiger proofing settings. Even then you almost have to try to miss a fairway. For anyone interested, buy TW '03, its the same game.... and you get the Predator, best fantasy course of all time.

Red Rose gave it a0:
A slightly tweaked game with identical graphics from 4 years ago. EA are ripping people off with this game. Lazy, lazy programming.

Blue Falcon gave it a3:
06 deserves a 3 because it's mildy worse than last years game and is full price after minor tweaks. They really shouldn't have taken out the custom soundtrack from 2005. Get ready to listen to more lame 'ea trax'.
