Summary

Tomb Raider: Legend revives the athletic, intelligent and entertaining adventurer who won the hearts and minds of gamers worldwide. Lara comes alive with intricately animated expressions, moves and abilities. An arsenal of modern equipment, such as a magnetic grappling device, binoculars, frag grenades, personal lighting device and communications equipment, allows gamers to experience tomb raiding as never before. Eidos and Crystal Dynamics shaped Lara's look and movements to be an inherent extension of her skills, motivation and personality. Lara's character model features natural structure, realistic textures, detailed facial features, reactive eyes and fluid motion, all of which make her part of a living environment. New character animations and controls allow her to move through stunning environments with grace and precision, while an understanding of the game's original appeal reinvigorates the fundamental explore-and-solve adventure experience. Between the plotting, level design, and gameplay, Tomb Raider: Legend does an admirable job of rescuing the franchise. Crystal Dynamics have torn down the franchise, consulted with the creator, and rebuilt it from the ground up as something significantly different…Something great.

Every second of this game screams skillful design and the result is a liberating game world that feels open and responsive. Nearly every object in the game reacts to Lara's influence, and this applies to the gamer holding the control pad as well - it's impossible to play this game and not fall under its tempting spell.

While it has modernized the gameplay mechanics, Legend feels like a walk down memory lane, recreating the feel of the original games. This is somehow comforting; no matter how many times Lara misses a ledge, is crushed by a boulder or dies in a hail of bullets, you feel she will always be there for you.

It’s good to see Lara back in top form and while her adventure is a bit on the short side and combat could have been handled a lot better, it’s hard to say no to a pretty girl that still has what it takes to show us a really good time.

Crystal Dynamics has finally made Lara into the female Indiana Jones she’s always threatened to be, and even managed to fill the game with memorable moments, such as an incident with a motorbike on the rooftops of Japan, swan diving off a high cliff into a lake, and even base jumping into the middle of a combat zone.

A crisply executed adventure that alternates among third-person shooting, platform-jumping, and environmental puzzles, Legend doesn't excel at any one in particular, but it rotates the elements smoothly and regularly enough that it compensates in variety.

If anything, Legend succeeds in assuaging frustration. Puzzles never encroach on the aggravation of yester incarnations due to a RAD (“Remote Analysis Device”) that identifies objects of note. It’s reminiscent of "Grim Fandango" in the sense that you’re not left to hunt around wildly for the key elements in a conundrum.

It took me just under 8 hours to complete 90% of the game, and it's not a terrible stretch to imagine someone rushing through it in 5 or 6. It's a good sign for a game when players want more, and it's further proof that the Tomb Raider series is back in a big way.

Most importantly, the puzzles are back on track. Traps, levers, pulleys, chains, chasms, secret passges, underground lakes, rotating knives — there’s a cunning solution to each, designed to keep you puzzling for just long enough to gain satisfaction in the solving, but not long enough to make you want to hurl your own internal organs at the screen.

A good return to the roots of the series. It doesn't do anything new or different, but it has a great blend of action and adventure that will always keep you moving and interested. The problem is that it moves a bit too fast, and it's all over way too soon.

Eli gave it a7:
The past couple of Tomb Raider games were pretty awful. The good news is that the latest game starring Lara Croft is much better than "Angel of Darkness". This game is in it's own right pretty enjoyable and worth a playthrough. It does have some problems such as generic gunplay and short length. I would have to say Tomb Raider is a little overrated but it is still fun. I'm not one for puzzle solving exploration games but Legend managed to keep me entertained throughout but it did not blow me away. If your really into the Tomb Raider kind of game maybe it's worth your money but I couldn't find enough reasons to seriosly consider purchasing it.

Tomb Raider Legends has it all. The Gaming world need a good sequel to the Tomb Raider series, and Tomb Raider Legends delivers!!

Todd K. gave it an8:
Very fun game with a damn leave you hanging ending. Only gripe is that it was way too short. Other than that Tomb Raider was a fun 7.5 hours.

Josh gave it a5:
Despite the hype this is just a dumbed down but pretty looking reincarnation of a once unique game. Bring back the mystical beauty of the originals, with their huge open expanses and intricate puzzles. Leave scripted choreography and combat moves to other games that do it better.

Roman T. gave it a7:
Well, I just finished this game the other day. Only took about 8 hours to complete. I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the ending and overall gameplay. I don't believe Crystal Dynamics managed to successfully resurrect the dying Tomb Raider. There was nothing really special about this game. The Legend just lacks most of the elements that made original games so darn fun. First of, the story did not hold my attention what so ever. It was confusing and was just there to keep the action going. The environments, even looking great, felt very linear and not all that huge. There weren't enough huge open spaces like in original games. I liked the physics involved in most of the puzzles, but they were just so darn easy and obvious. There weren't any real "thinking" puzzles that original Tomb Raider had. I like having to memorize patterns, find the right combinations and such. The Legend just had some simple push the switch to open the door type puzzles. The whole game just felt very linear and the challenge was given in small chuncks. There just wasn't any motivation to really explore the environments and look for interesting ways out. Also, what happened to the famous CG clips between Tomb Raider levels? They got replaced by a quick-time button pressing cutscenes? I would prefer a nicely done cinematics like in original games. On the positive side, I think the controls in Legend are pretty solid, maybe even too solid at times. There were quite a few parts where I passed without dying first time. So, in conclusion, I just want to point out that Tomb Raider Legend is pretty much solid game that just seems to lack a lot of magic of originals. It's definitely too short to justify the $50 price. The designers at Crystal Dynamics should've done their homework and researched the genre more.

James H. gave it an8:
A return to form for the ailing franchise. Eidos' decision to give the job to Silicon Knights has proven its worth. The experience garnered from the Soul Reaver series is an obvious influence to the new TR. With a much more fluid and responsive control system and a return to exploration, this is the first major step forward the series has taken. Its not perfect, the game leads the player by the hand, with too many hints making some sections more obvious than they should be and a relatively short lifespan. The vehicle sections aren't much good either. However, there are lots of secrets to find and a plethora of lovely touches, both graphically and in the level design. Overall, this is a very solid effort and well worth a look.

Sam T. gave it an8:
very good game loads of things to do on it and very challenging.
