To me, what Days has always held over the head of Weeks is simply this...mood. 28 Days Later has an unparalleled mood and style in its execution, in almost everything it does. It doesn't just describe events to you, like some movies do, but it portrays it in such a way that it's genuinely chilling and believable. In comparison to Weeks, Days doesn't hold what it has over you like a bludgeon, it doesn't attempt to beat you with the speed of the zombies, or the gore. But it places it in supreme positions in the film to have the utmost effect, at the climax, at the low-point, etc. And the best part about it, is that it manages to achieve a constant level of edginess, a constant thrill even when there's nothing on the screen, it manages all of this without a guitar-blasting soundtrack (however awesome the Weeks theme is) or cameras explicitly showing that zombies are just running at you, spewing blood as they go. In fact, you are often scared in this movie simply by the fact that you don't really see what's scaring you, which is a true sign of mastery in the genre. On the other end of the spectrum, all performances in this film are excellent, the chemistry between Seline and Jim is believable especially. All characters have an edge of sympathy, and portray to you that not everyone to survive the apocalypse will be beefy, bulky men with chain guns. It defies a lot of things that would be expected of it, and ditches all normal conventions, pulling it off with grace and poise. It's a must see for anyone who can stand the level of intensity. It's a must see for anyone who can stand the. Expand

28 Days Later is a movie that has much more of a realistic outcome than any other zombie movie out there. We all know that the government has worked on things of this sort. It is not just a movie where so re-animated corpses eat people, but rather, bodies become infested with a virus making them mindless killers.

Not meant to scare you unless you can think about what the movie represents. The disturbing truth of how men react to destruction and death with violence and anger. Anger, an infectious disease that has been spreading throughout mankind for centuries.

With those who say this movie is not scary, I had to half-way agree; it's more tragic than scary, but there were plenty of moments when I found myself holding my breath. This is an excellent portrayal of people who are surviving, and what people can be driven to. I enjoyed the sketchy editing--it definitely set the mood. This movie is not so much for people looking for a cheap scare--you will get bored...this movie drips with suspense, but not always the kind with people walking around dark corners to scary violin music--that's predictable; this movie engaged me much more. Rips off oh so many Zombie flick's but it's done with great style that you don't really care. Someone on this page said that it only appeals to 'chin stroking art students' I am not a student nor do i stroke my chin. But the person who said that spent far to much time stroking something else in his bedroom for his brain to evolve or to even give a decent cuss at the audience of this film so here i am down on his level telling you this is a bloody good movie. [***Potential Spoilers***] 28 Days Later is the best film I've seen yet this summer. The acting, writing, cinematography, music were all top notch. As a horror film this one is a one of a kind. Its real ability to scare its audience has little to do with typical horror movie conventions, although it does manage a moment here and there, such as the church scene (especially the moment when ..... [reference deleted]). However, this film's perspective on human nature is where it achieves the most scares. From the well meaning animal rights group in the beginning of the film to Jim's rampage at its end (which has entered into my all time favorite movie scenes), no one in this film is free of sin, an inherently violent nature or accountability for their actions. The Rage disease is just a medium for human nature to act out it's most primal inclinations, which seems to be aimed at harming other human beings. The third section of the film which takes place at a manor house under the "protection" of a small military group only confirms these tendancies. The soldiers actions towards our heroes (especially the women) drives home the idea that humans don't need to necessarily be infected with Rage to canabalize upon each other. Expand

Nearly perfect horror flick. Cinematography, sound effects, and soundtrack mesh together extraordinarily well. I haven't been this scared from a film since The Shining. It creeps you out in a psychological way, not just guts and gore; although it has its fair share of that. The story delves into thoughts of the darker side of human nature, but who cares about all that when the movie is so much fun? Expand

Once again the folks who put together the commercials and trailers sold this movie as something else that it truly is. This movie does not belong in the horror genre. 28 days later is a drama/suspense flick. The plot while not being original (what is anymore), was well written and executed. For those who want something more in a movie other than guts and blood flying out of various orifices, 28 days is thought provoking as it beautifully done. Expand

I think that this film was great; the photography was exce'lent, and the shots of the infected was the best i´ve seen. The story wasn´t too intelligent, but it was well taken to the cinemas. i also think that the people that say "i dont like it" is the people that only enjoy the beach, and dont understand a life less ordinary, or trainspotting, from boyle. how many of you understand the analogy between the virus, the infected people in the movie, and the people that continuos see the violence in the cnn news?. please! stop seeing movies like scream, and watch something a bit more clever, just like this triller. i said! There really is something to be said about a film that won't go away from your memories these days. I was expecting a good, scary horror flick. What I got far surpassed my expectations. There is something strangely moving about this film that I can't seem to put my finger on. Yes, there are horrific images and sounds surrounding you in the theater, but once you steel yourself against the frightening moments (if you can) you are taken on a ride of survival, and, ultimately, hope alongside some pretty solid characters. All in all, even if you're not a fan of scary movies, this one's worth the price of admission. Expand

As far as horror, or other, movies go, this is one of the best I have seen. The cinemetography, acting, script, directing, etc. were all superb. I *almost* even had a hard time watching the brutal violence in a couple scenes as well. The soundtrack was also a perfect compliment to the scenes and was mixed in perfectly. I was a bit discouraged when I started finding some people panning this movie, but then I read the comments and I realized the bad reviews were mostly written in incomplete sentences with atrocious spelling. If you didn't like it, try to ask yourself what you are looking for in a movie.... Is it $100 million in special effects or is it quality and articulation? Don't go out and see movies like Charlie's Angels or The Hulk and maybe we will start seeing more movies of this caliber instead of that big-budget, slapped together garbage. Expand

This is a great movie from Danny Boyle and Alax Garland. This is not your striaght up horror movie that I'm sure many of the other reviewers thought it was trying to be. And this is not Dawn of the Dead '04 (Side note: Dawn of the Dead '79 is better than the remake, go see it) 28 days later is a horror movie with a heart. It is very well put together and done so with so much care that it really comes across on-screen. This is less of a "zombie" movie and more of an "end of the world" movie. If you like movies - not just shoot'em up hang'em high ones - you'll like 28 days later. Expand

The musical score is superb and so is the story, cause it can be real (instead of all those dumb horror movie's) Another great thing in this movie is scene in the abandoned Londen. Londen looks deserted, that's amazing en great, it really got me. So see this one! This movie is more than a zombie horror flick if you ask me. It really revolutionized the apocalyptic thriller in many places. It's much more fast-paced in that the "zombies" if you will, don't hobble after you and moan. They sprint and the chances of survival are much less. There's also an eerie feeling a claustrophobia at the beginning of the movie, even though the main character is out in the open with London to himself. It also creates characters that you begin to love, and hate. There's a thing about how people killing people is how it's always been and that they're in a state of normality even with the crazies running around. One of my favorite horror/thrillers I've seen, and I can't wait to see the sequel. Expand

In summary, it's gorgeous. It's less about zombies than survival after the apocalypse. The cinematography is exceptional, the acting convincing, the camera placement ingenious, and the story, well, is consistently intriguing. If "28 Days Later" followed through, rather than just hinted at the ideas in Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale", we might've had a minor masterpiece on our hands. Sadly, the makers of this film has its commercial obligations, so it ends in a very long sequence of murders at a military compound. But the journey to this rudimentary stab at civilization is a very engaging one. The four survivors look so desolate in the barren landscape. There's a gorgeous image witnessed and commented upon by the Brendan Gleeson character that may make your heart stop. What the ads don't tell you is that "28 Days Later" is not really a horror film. I think the zombies are more objects of pity, rather than fear. It's too bad their journey had to bring them into contact with the soldiers(who are the real monsters in the film). And then the filmmakers want to make the heavy-handed comment that man's worst enemy is themselves. But "28 Days Later" is a very welcome addition to the summer of suck, that is the blockbuster season. It's really an art-house film that went wide. Expand

28 Days Later remains my favorite movie of all time. Not only does it have some of the most amazing camera angles and artistic shots, It's intensity is absolutely unmatched. Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris are simply superb as well. Many people who see this movie fail to understand that it's not just a stupid zombie flick. 28 days later is far more; it's an intelligent study of the human psyche and how we're mentally affected by danger. Shocking realism and some of the genre's most horrifying shots in recent years are captured perfectly by Boyle, who succeeds in creating genuine fear from the base of one of humanity's most elemental anxieties -- that which can tear a city such as London to the bare; the fear of an unknown viral pandemic. Released when it was, Boyle's already horror classic tackled this global nightmare precisely when it was to be most effective; as SARS was striking on high abroad and America was on alert to prevent any cases of its own. '28 Days Later' is unrelenting horror cinema that first stunned England, and then created an epidemic of fear in the States. This film is quite possibly the most intellectually ripe Expand

I really loved this movie. Finally a movie with ass-kickingly fast zombies. But i see a lot of zero's up here and as I read i got the impression that most of those people didnt understand the movie so im gonna try to help some of the points the complained about. 1) Now the reason there is light in the supermarket is because if you look really closely you will find its not actually a ceiling, ok, its just one big hole. I bet u missed that. 2) They aren't zombies they are pissed off because its not really a "virus" its more like people are transferring periods to each other. 3) The reason they dont attack other infected is because once you get bit...well...i uhhhhh...yea...4) The army fellows didn't want to get with the little girl as a cure, but just to rebuild the entire human race with 9 guys ad 2 girls. It's less about flesh-craving zombies than survival in post-apocalyptic London. Thus, it's not as scary as it's being hyped up to be, but not in ages has a film portraying the futility of mankind been so shockingly real, distrubing, and horrific.

Danny Boyle's post-modern zombie flick is quite rightly acclaimed. It's tense, scary and thoroughly British. You follow a group of well-developed characters that you actually care about (a rarity for a horror film) and you genuinely feel for their plight. The real strength of 28 Days is its use of contrast in tone - Boyle gives you a good scare, then gradually lulls you into a false sense of security again with an extended period of calm, making the next scare all the more shocking. The middle act of the film essentially resembles a jolly family road trip, making the jet-black finale all the more disturbing. Boyle has plenty of opportunity to show off as a director, and with some arty cinematography and rapid-fire editing, he continues to prove himself to be a true artisan. The crowning jewel of 28 Days Later is definitely the finale, which is a dazzling stylish sequence that evolves into something you'd never see in a mainstream Hollywood horror film. With some great performances, loads of scares and bucket-loads of style, 28 Days Later is a truly spectacular alternative British horror film. Expand

The film is violent, but doesn't go out of its way to be violent, rather than being non-stop graphic violence. And the story is actually semi-believable, the infected aren't dead bodies risen from the dead, they are living people infected with a deadly incurable virus. I highly recommend this movie, extremely good. Expand

The Rage virus has wiped out nearly all of England, turning its infected into murderous killers driven only by their need to feed. Now, a handful of unlucky survivors are left to find an escape from the nationwide pandemic. In 2002, Danny Boyle shook the Horror genre with a refreshing new thriller that redefined the zombie movie and terrified audiences around the world. 28 DAYS LATER offers a nihilistic world view in which humanity is the ultimate villain. Man's attempt to dissect and control nature is what caused the deadly virus, and while the infected mindlessly attack out of the primal need to feed, it is the living characters that kill out of fear, paranoia, and selfish desire. As best portrayed by the corrupted band of soldiers in the end of the film, it is darkest human emotions that drive home the suspense in 28 DAYS LATER, with the added horror of infected flesh-eaters running in the streets. The infected are unlike any of the undead that we have ever seen before. They are fast and ferocious, bursting through windows and tearing into their victims with a shocking speed. This would become a popular trend in the zombie films to follow, the most notable example being Zack Synder's frightening update to the Horror classic DAWN OF THE DEAD. Boyle's decision to shoot 28 DAYS LATER on a digital camera delivers a grim sense of reality, which is darkened even further by the dreary score. He also creates one of the defining moments in recent Horror as Jim walks aimlessly through the deserted streets of London. 28 DAYS LATER has a devastating effect on the viewer, and has proven to be one of the best films from the 2000's.

While the plot never even considers throwing the viewer any curve balls, the film shines on its unparalleled ability to set atmosphere, its talented actors, and its excellent dialogue. The overwhelming element of this film is fear; it's what drives both the protagonist and the antagonists, and it's what this film almost perfectly instills in its audience. The expert cinematography and music very much make this movie what it is, hitting and emphasizing every emotional note perfectly. Expand

Definitely the best zombie movie ever. A true masterpiece. Deals more with human emotions related to survival instead of resorting to gore and violence. Only when you hold it in comparison against other zombie movies that you realize how genuine and thought provoking this movie was.

  1. Around about the third act, the picture does what no self-respecting virus ever would -- relents, turns confused, and lets our immune system fight back with thoughts of its own, with distracting cavils about the logic of the plot and the slightness of the themes.

The look of the film, shot on digital video, is haunting and gritty. The cleaner, prettier look of 35mm would have detracted from the immediacy and sense of foreboding created in this artful blend of sci-fi and pseudo-realism.

Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, a veteran of low-tech Dogme films, work wonders with a digital camera, pausing to take in the beauty of the countryside or an eerily empty London…It's virtuosic without ever quite being showy.
