I actually thought it was really good-but not great. Predictable though it was, it still managed to be charming and Peet and Kutcher had chemistry. However, at the beginning Peet has so much life and sparkle to her which she seems to have lost the next time they meet, along with her astonishing beauty.

Insufferable. If this is the best "date movie" you can find, maybe you shouldn't go out on that date.

While certainly being slightly more intelligent and funny than your average Kate Hudson-crapfest rom com, ALLL is IMO still dissapointing. The first part of the movie, where the two main characters meet for the first time, is terrific and well-directed (with a great use of The Cure's "Mint Car") and the rest is flat. While unusually talky and languid for a major studio release, the art-house leanings the director seems to be trying ultimately fail to serve the story worthy. As an avid AK hater, I must say this is easily his best perf. and Amanda Peet is great as well, but the two have absolutely no chemistry and the supposed "love" between them is mostly just cute-talk and funny voices. In the end, despite the good acting and Kal Penn, the movie is not as good as it could've been, but I cannot say for sure that it was a bad movie. If you want to see one of the better rom com's not written by Richard Curtis or starring Hugh Grant, go see "Hitch" instead. Expand

I would love to kick Ashton directly in his pretty boy balls and then stoop over him as he writhes in pain and yell "PUNK'D!!!"

A Lot Like Love is a romatic comedy that explores the relationship between Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) and Emily (Amanda Peet) over the course of a 7 year period. There is a definite physical attraction between the two (on their first encounter, they join the "Mile High Club"), but is their bond more that just sex? Do they each love the other? They have failed relationships with others during this time so they both are just a little skeptical of where their relationship is headed. Following his breakup with his girlfriend Bridgett, the two reflect back on lost loves: Emily: "Did you love Bridgett?" Oliver: "Yes ...(pause) ... I think I did ... (pause) ... well, I don't know. I thought it was love .. (pause) .. whatever it was, it was a lot like love." Their relationship seems to be a lot like love but is the other really the person who they are searching for. Both face the question and each must finally answer that question independent of the other's decision. A "cute" movie with lots of funny situation and a healthy dose of slapstick humor; I laughed out loud on at least a dozen occasions. Not a "must-see" movie but definitely one that will entertain you. I give it a 7.75. Expand

Romantic comedy with mostly well-written dialogue interspersed with a few lines that makes one cringe. Amanda Peet is deliciously authentic as the both bubbly and headstrong deubtante-in-denial. Good underlying theme: Long-term relationships are not for the faint-hearted.

Being one of those people who can sit back and enjoy a predictable, popcorn type movie without much worrying about plot and just enjoying it for what it is, I hated this one. Something about this movie just rubbed me the wrong way- with sandpaper. It's not a terrible concept (althought it does test your patience) and the writing is passable. It could've been wittier, it could39;ve used a few more 'smart' laughs. Actually, I think the thing that put me off this one is the casting (and even the writing) of the two main characters. Ashton Kutcher I can handle- Just Married was nice, I actually like him paired with Brittany Murphy. He seems to be slowly heading for the dreaded funk that so many romantic/comedy lead men have fallen into- he's playing the same character in every movie. Steve Martin did this for years, but he had the advantage of some of the best scripts and characters ever created in the genre. Somehow, Ashton's Kelso character in That 70's Show had more definition than this role. But Amanda Peet grinds on my nerves like no one else can. There's an inherent smarm factor in her that makes her unstomachable to me, and it overpowers the movie itself. Movies that she has been in that I've liked, I've liked in spite of her because the quality of the rest of the cast and the script have pulled it up. (Something's gotta Give, Igby Goes Down) This movie had none of that charm, but could've worked with two leads who actually had some chemistry and a few re-writes by someone like Kevin Smith. Expand

I absolutely loved it! A Lot Like Love is unlike many chick flicks i have seen in the past. It has a realistic plot line and the acting is, i dare say, excellent. Kutcher and Peet are genuine, and have great chemistry. I laughed and cried. Even guys might like it!

This Gen X romance about two erstwhile lovers and growing friends (Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher) who spend years and years repeatedly failing to connect on any deeper level has been most frequently compared to 1978's Same Time Next Year and 1989's When Harry Met Sally...but too bad this film and its two protagonists almost completely lack the one crucial element that both of those hugely enjoyable predecessors had in common: wit. Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn in the one, and Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in the other, had funny, quotable dialogue by the score; Peet and Kutcher are attractive, engaging performers but their characters are tediously inarticulate. Far too much screen time is wasted on footage of them playing childish practical jokes on one another and/or putting various objects up their noses! Director Nigel Cole (Saving Grace, Calendar Girls) actually comes up with a way of dealing with this obvious limitation that reflects well on him and is rather charming: he practically gives away many of the stars' scenes together to peripheral figures such as bartenders, flight attendants and fellow public transportation passengers. Then, too, maybe Cole and screenwriter Colin Patrick Lynch are trying to make a Big Statement about Peet's and Kutcher's helplessness, wimpiness and lack of backbone: occasionally Cole stages and lights scenes such as a creepy, foreboding New Year's Eve party that make the movie look like a neonoir disguised as a romcom. Despite these efforts and a charming, likable interpretation of the traditionally somewhat thankless best friend role by Kathryn Hahn (who delivered The Great Unheralded Supporting Performance Of 2004 as a tattooed bartender with an unrequited crush on Kutcher's former TV co-star Topher Grace in Win A Date With Tad Hamilton) , A Lot Like Love ultimately collapses under the weight of too many tiresome musical interludes and a wedding sequence at the end that's a total cop-out and rip-off. You may enjoy bits and pieces of A Lot Like Love, but when the lights go on you may find yourself hungry for something that's a lot more like a real movie. Expand

"A Lot Like Love" is Amanda Peet's demo reel. She's ready for a plum role in a serious film like Jennifer Connelly was when Ron Howard tapped her for "A Beautiful Mind". Larry Brown took the L.A. Clippers to the playoffs, and Peet challenges a much maligned actor, synonymous with Freddie Prinze Jr., and helps him give a performance that transcends our notion that he's nothing more than a male model with an acting coach. In what might be the best cell-phone scene to date in any movie, Ashton Kutcher helps alleviate Emily's anguish over her dead mother's birthday by telling a tasteless joke near the tombstone. This is the moment in which both parties should realize they were meant to be together. However, the screenwriter isn't done with postponing the inevitable. But even at its more hackneyed (yet another wedding crashing scene like the one in "The Graduate"), "A Lot Like Love" is bailed out by a very funny line. Expand

These post-1998 witty romantic comedies seem to follow a familiar ploy in hopes to stand out in a sea of sameness. That ploy is a simple attempt identifying with young people that think this sort of deliberately obtuse wit exists in real life and is plausible to apply their own lives. The reality is that such phantasmagorical wit-ridden romance doesn't define a damn thing about young people in society however much those who identify with this prototypical movie would like to think so. I call this The Garden State Complex, and in addition to sounding like a nice Emo band, this complex seems to be quite widspread. Expand

Two very fine, genuine performances by Ashton Kutcher (I was totally taken aback as I was expecting drivel from him) and Amanda Peet. Not a BIG romantic comedy but a very FINE small one. 'Well worth first run prices and a lot less "Hollywood" than one would expect.

This is the most romantic movie I have seen in years. As a regular armchair film critic who happens to love romantic comedies but finds the quality of most to be sorely lacking, I usually start to gnaw at a film within the first five minutes. But A Lot Like Love immediately embarks on a tortuous journey of love’s most confounding mileposts. The flirtation, the mystery, the attention, the retreat… A guy who wants to get "all his ducks in a line," and a gal who deals with whatever happens to come her way help each other loosen up their respective rigid perspectives on how life should be lived. The chemistry between Oliver and Emily percolates over a span of nearly seven years but neither lets it come to a full boil lest it ruin their plans. Kutcher and Peet actually play against the urge to sizzle adding just the right emotional and sexual tension to keep it real. This film is certainly easy to look at what with the hip beauty of both of its stars decorating every shot, and I can honestly say that I did not know what was going to happen next. Finally, if anyone has ever had that "friend" that you've know for years, you know you have feelings for them, appreciate their loyalty, and take their bad with their good, but have spent years keeping an eye out for something better, or just not taken that "next step" because of geography, peer-pressure, or fear of rejection, you will completely appreciate the honesty and sentiment of this story. You’ll definitely get a refresher course in the fact that life is short, enjoy every moment you can, and take some risks or you’ll be looking back on an awful lot of regret. Expand

We all know where this movie will go from start to beginning and there are some cool ideas in the movie that are not executed well. If you want to see how a photographer's work is captured in a love story and moments of realizations (watch Shopgirl). It's your typical movie using montages with your popular ballads of the year. Ashton Kutcher can't translate into a descent actor and Pete carries the movie but isn't always convincing. There is no heart or charm in the movie, just cheap scenes with crap music. Expand

A Lot Like Love could have been a generic Rom-Com but it has two things going for it and those two things are its talented leads Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet. The story isn’t that unique but it does avoid the usual potholes that sink lesser Rom Coms. The story follows two pretty young things (Peet and Kutcher) who meet on a plane to New York an get ‘acquainted’. They spend the day together in the city and then part ways. The rest of the film follows the times they reconnect to discover where each other’s lives are. It’s similar to One Day but unlike One Day it doesn’t feel like an incomplete story because the moments of their lives we do see do progress the story of their relationship, not their lives apart which was One Day’s major flaw. There are some problems with there being some unnecessary side stories such as Peet’s characters friend problems that add to the run time but not much more but the moments when Peet and Kutcher are together (or on the phone) are both well written and acted with the two sharing very real chemistry which is helped by the very real writing. The film does suffer due to its reliance on the conventional grand gesture ending, this time slightly subverted but still equally as ridiculous. It’s a convention that we have Cameron Crowe and John Hughes to blame for but at least in films like Pretty In Pink and Say Anything it felt real and powerful whereas in modern films it has become lazy and predictable. The film is a little slow in the middle with a nappy storyline (yes, you read that right) that goes on far too long but overall it is an endearing love story that is at times funny, emotional and dare I say it, adorable. Here's a pleasant little romantic comedy that doesn't try too hard and has the virtue of doing a few things differently.

Interjections from perennial second bananas Kathryn Hahn (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) and Kal Penn (winning even when not conjuring vivified bags of pot) generate the only sparks.

Kutcher and Peet are a low-wattage pair, with little of the verbal riffing that counts as seduction in most romantic comedies, but they have real chemistry together, and A Lot Like Love happily indulges their silly, juvenile one-upmanship.
