  1. The title comes from the memoir by Mariane Pearl, wife of kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. It applies equally to Winterbottom, who has made the rarest movie among this summer's releases: a taut police procedural that examines all sides of an issue and forces us to re-think our own.
  2. 60
The movie is engrossing and well-acted throughout (especially Khan), but ultimately leaves us less optimistic about the prospects for peace.

One of a kind. One of the most important films this year and every American should see it. Jolie at her very best. Give her the Oscar now.

Hoberman's Village Voice review says it all, and better than I could. It comes off as well-intentioned, but a vanity project for Jolie nonetheless. All the acting is quality, but it doesn't really commit to the visceral nature of the story. Not affecting. Expand

Okay, so it is true that Jolie gives one of her best performances. That is obvious. But step back for a second and look at this film. Stop being easy on it because its a true story. It is simply a messy and dull movie that comes up empty where it shoulife old jerk teers. It is mostly boring, provides no twist or area of suspense that should be represented by this fascinating story. The emotional depth and life inside the other characters, besides Jolie, (which only she gives to herself, with no help from the director) is non-existant. The film is really not very good. It is jumbled, confusing, inconclusive, boring, and feels very dull and empty. There is really nothing to the film. I would not see it again. Expand
