A disappointing mess. Beautiful direction and cinematography, but no discernible story structure or characterization. As with "Amelie", I never felt the couple were truly in love. The complement of Jeunet's visual style with Tautou's quirky acting will pretty much always give an enchanting product, but in "A Very Long Engagement," the story itself is much too clunky and aloof to stay focused on.

A very long... movie... So much of the movie could have been cut out without detracting from it.

Jeunet forgot to remember that in order to tell a love story, the viewer has to get the feeling that the protagonists are in fact in love. Overrated because it's french.
