Often unpleasant to watch and overall it is just not an appealing film. There are so many better holocaust films out there, this is too often tedious and seems far longer than its 106 minute length. Jeff Goldblum does well, but his German accent needs work.

  1. The madness of Holocaust survivors is here played mainly for dark comedy. The film's dazzling central performance in a mental institute finds Jeff Goldblum in the role of his career.

Largely set in two of the least appetizing locations imaginable, a concentration camp and an insane asylum, this is a rigorously made film that does almost nothing to invite the viewer into its world.
  3. The director, Paul Schrader, tries for cleansing audacity, but ends up too close to farce.
