  1. 30
    Lacks development and dramatic coherence.
  2. 30
Never more than a dull, paint-by-numbers, overly literal transcription of the book.
  3. 30
If misery were inherently interesting, this adaptation starring Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle as a couple plagued by alcoholism and child mortality might be too.
  4. 30
In the translation from page to film, the life seems to have gone out of the story
  5. The effect of the 2 1/2-hour film is deadening.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. The quality of this movie wasn't to bad considering the time that the movie was made. I only gave it a 5/10 because the Book Angela's Ashes much better depicts the life of Frank McCourt. Also the book shows what Frank's father was really like. There is much more Drama in the book then the movie. Full Review »

This is quite a good movie. Despite being dominated by gloom, it retains a positive moral centre which keeps it enjoyable and heartening. This is quite a good movie. Despite being dominated by gloom, it retains a positive moral centre which keeps it enjoyable and heartening. It's perhaps a little too long also and it does tire a little towards the end, but it remains a very good film nonetheless. Full Review »
