  • Summary: Annie (Quvenzhané Wallis), a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014, was left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday. It’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom MissAnnie (Quvenzhané Wallis), a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014, was left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday. It’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around. [Sony Pictures] Expand

Annie is light on its feet, frothy, and always insistently, at times provocatively kind, determined to melt grumpy hearts like marshmallows.

Even with all this sparkle, the film staggers through its third act. By then, the script has rubbed the rough edges off the villains and made whatever point it was going to make several times over.

Quvenzhané Wallis is adorably plucky as the lead in Annie. She and Jamie Foxx as the newfangled Daddy Warbucks character have an appealing chemistry and their songs together are the best moments in the movie. But the rest of Annie is banal, shallow and markedly cynical.

Unfortunately, the longer this Annie goes on, the more steam it loses.

As far as holiday films go this is perfect for lightening the holiday hangover but ultimately it's equal parts onerous and energetic, overreaching in its attempt not buckle under the weight of previous iterations.

Director Will Gluck's glam, grim re-imagining of the Depression-era musical about the hard-hearted rich man and the little girl who melts him, is truly depressing.

When a stage musical as beloved as Annie hits the big screen and falls ignominiously on its fat one, you might ask: WTF? For starters, updating the Depression-era tale to NYC 2014 is a really dumb idea. The strain of the shoehorning is evident in every scene.

Look, I don'tI love Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx's performance, but somebody forgot to watch the original Annie and see how it's done. Look, I don't wanna be so mean to Sony, but making a reboot to the beloved 1982 Annie feels like you wanted to make tons of money at the box office and should probably get awards. Unfortunately, the movie stinks. Cameron Diaz. Why is that blonde bimbo in this movie, anyway? She did her worse in Sex Tape, now this. In the original, Hannigan is one of the greatest villains of all time where she was a drunken caretaker and punish many orphanage girls like doing chores, scrubbing the bathroom, and allowing her butler, Rooster, to kill Annie. Dude, Carol Burnett was in the original. A true legendary classic. This is what musical movies is all about. But this Hannigan by Diaz, just complete rubbish. If any movie that should be in the worst movies of 2014 is Annie. Don't even bother seeing it this Christmas because once the Razzies coming up, Worst Remake, Prequel, Reboot, or Sequel, Worst Actress (Diaz), Worst Director, and Worst Picture should do the trick.
