    You get a lot for your money here - great acting, beautiful people, a taught understated film, and a well-told tale that keeps you enthralled as the protagonists win and lose at the gambling tables. But we also get a unique view of an era now long-gone, and the this movie offers a glimpse of a deep enchantment with the sleek modernism of the 1960's, adn a disconnected estrangement that accompanies it. A lot of fun to watch.… Expand

    Seen through Demy's eyes (and Raoul Coutard's shimmering black-and-white photography), their extravagance is so effortlessly cool, you feel somehow lucky just to be there with them.

    The title of the film is most unfortunate because it gives no indication of the film's stark theme. Moreau is good as the disenchanted woman, but Mann is less effective.
